SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A frustrating mystery is plaguing commuters in Carmel Valley.A seemingly perfectly good brand new lane meant to ease traffic to the 56 has been coned off for months. The project adds a third lane on southbound Camino del Sur from around Highland Village place to Highway 56. Greg Agius, who commutes that way, says it's been coned off for months. A city staffer told him it would be complete by the end of August, but on Monday it was still inaccessible to drivers. RELATED: San Diego road repairs are ahead of scheduleAgius, who also bikes in the area, said it is making for a tight merge that has led to near fender benders. "It's backing up my commute," he said. "I've actually over the last three to four months had maybe half a dozen close calls."The lane is meant to lighten the congestion in Carmel Valley, which is getting increasingly congested as more housing is built. Developer Lennar hired contractor MGI to add the lane as part of its approval for area housing projects. RELATED: San Diego projects receive funding due to controversial gas tax"This is the one that baffles me the most because it's more dangerous what they've done with the cones than if the cones weren't here," Agius said. The problem rests with the traffic light at the intersection. It doesn't stretch far enough over to be visible to all cars in the new lane. Caltrans Spokesman Ed Cartagena gave an example of cars next to a semi-truck.They wouldn't be able to see the traffic light if not in front of them. Cartagena said it needs to be extended before anyone can benefit from the new asphalt. He also noted recent other work on the lane, above and below ground, including removal of an electric box ten inches above ground.  Either way, Cartagena said the new light should be installed by the end of the week, clearing the way for the lane to open. A city spokesman said the contractor had delays in obtaining the signal pole and mast-arm for the traffic light. After battling cancer for four years, her family said she’s now in remission.The 10-year-old was invited to the Macy’s store to fill out a letter to Santa for the company’s annual Believe campaign. They've been color blind their whole lives, but thanks to a new pair of special glasses...that's about to change."Eventually when I got to high school, and realizing I was color blind was one of those things, like, oh, that's why I couldn't see that or I couldn't see that," said Ricardo Solano. Solano is one of about 300 million people around the world who are color blind.But as a research associate for a biotech company, there are days when he needs a little help from his colleagues."One of the main dyes they use is like red and green to differentiate things," he said, laughing. "It's a big contrast apparently, but I can't see the contrast."Solano has a good sense of humor about it, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't wish he could see the full elegance of a San Diego sunset."Just enjoying the beauty of life," he said. "I like to go backpacking and outdoors and stuff."For people who are color blind, pink looks gray, red looks brown and the colors red and green can look almost white-ish."Color vision deficiency is passed down through the father's genes," said Corey Ulz, an optician at Scripps Poway Eyecare. He said things can look dull and colors, washed out."It basically makes the colors that you and I would normally see normally not as vibrant," he said. "A little more muddled."On Monday, Solano and three other San Diegans got to see vibrant color, thanks to a special pair of enchroma glasses.Their reactions and expressions were heartwarming. "Red. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 10-year-old boy who allegedly fired two rounds from a shotgun at San Diego Police officers after barricading himself in a Southcrest backyard shed is in custody, police say.Family members at the home in the 4000 block of Boston Ave., about a block north of Caesar Chavez Elementary School, called police at about 9 a.m. after the 10-year-old armed himself with a knife and hammer.When police arrived, the child ran and hid in a shed with a shotgun, SDPD said. The child fired two rounds at officers, according to police, but no one was injured.The 10-year-old barricaded himself for nearly two hours, before surrendering to police peacefully.SDPD said the child will be taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.The shotgun was recovered at the scene, police said, and investigators plan to look into how the child came into possession of the weapon.10News is monitoring this breaking news story. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Clairemont man convicted of stabbing his mother to death was sentenced to 26 years to life in prison Friday.Joseph Robert Burks, 31, was convicted in June of first-degree murder in the July 24, 2017, slaying of his 58-year-old mother, Angela Burks, who was a longtime Otay Ranch High School science teacher.Police say Burks used a stun gun to incapacitate his mother, before stabbing her more than 20 times in the head, neck, and throat at the home they shared.RELATED: 499
