BEIJING, March 18 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin said Wednesday the central government had great confidence in continued prosperity and stability of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region(HKSAR).     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remarks when greeting with a delegation of social workers from Hong Kong headed by Mrs. Betty Tung, wife of the SAR's former Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa.     Mrs. Betty Tung set up the organization in 1998, mobilizing volunteers to help needy youth and women.     Jia, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, welcomed the visit of the delegation and praised its contribution to the region's prosperity and stability.     He said, "China has confidence and the ability in overcoming the global financial downturn, which brought us challenges and opportunities as well."     The mainland will always be a strong supporter of the Hong Kong SAR.

WUXI, Jiangsu, March 28 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor has urged the country to press forward the government's stimulus plans and spare no efforts to achieve the 2009 economic and social development targets.     All sides in China should combine their strength to boost growth, guarantee people's well being and maintain social stability amid the downturn, said Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), during a research tour to Wuxi city of eastern China's Jiangsu Province over the weekend.     China aims at an annual economic growth of about 8 percent this year after the global financial crisis slowed the 2008 growth to a seven-year low of 9 percent. WASHINGTON, March 19 (Xinhua) -- The United States and China on Thursday agreed to continue to use and further develop those regular exchange mechanisms established before to facilitate parliamentary exchanges between the two countries.     The consensus was reached during a meeting between Speaker Nancy Pelosi of the U.S. House of Representatives and a delegation of China's National People's Congress (NPC), headed by Chairman Li Zhaoxing of the NPC Foreign Affairs Committee.     Both sides spoke positively of the important roles that the Congress and NPC have played in the growth of China-U.S. relationship through inter-parliamentary exchanges and cooperation.     The two sides also exchanged views over issues of common concern such as energy and climate change.

BEIJING, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council, or Cabinet, adopted a stimulus plan Wednesday for the shipbuilding industry at an executive meeting chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao.     The meeting said shipbuilding is a modern, comprehensive industry that provides technical equipment for transportation, maritime development and national defense. Supporting shipbuilders would also help other sectors, including steel, chemicals, textiles, light industry, equipment manufacturing and information technology, it said. New orders for domestic shipbuilders are expected to fall to 20-30 million deadweight tons in 2009, compared to 58.18 million deadweight tons in 2008, according to the China Association of National Shipbuilding Industry    The meeting agreed to increase credit support by an unspecified amount for ship buyers. It also decided to extend the existing financial support policies for oceangoing vessels until 2012. These policies include tax rebates on key imported components for domestically owned oceangoing ships.     It said construction of new docks and the expansion of slipways should be suspended for three years to facilitate industrial restructuring.     It also recommended investment in research and development of facilities to build high-technology ships and maritime engineering equipment and promote technical innovation.     The meeting also approved a draft plan for fighting drought.
