We have increasingly been hearing about security and privacy problems with smart devices that are connected to the internet. All of these devices, from doorbells to thermostats, could one day have what's almost like a nutrition label on them. The label would tell you about the security and privacy features of the device.Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University came up with the design for what the label could look like. The researchers want to have the label on the packaging and the website. They expect there would still be impulse buys where you would disregard the label, but it would help in other situations.“When they're making a more considered purchase for their home or if they're giving it as a gift to some else or if it's something that's more sensitive, I’m not just buying a light bulb, but I'm buying something that's health-related or something that has a video camera attached to it and I want to know where that video data is going, then I expect people will pay attention,” said Lorrie Cranor, Director of CyLab.Cranor, one of researchers who has been working on this, says the biggest obstacle right now is getting companies to buy in.She says to really have widespread adoption, there needs to be regulation that requires it. A number of pieces of regulation in Congress have mentioned the idea of a label, but none of them have advanced. She says having marketplaces require it would help as well.“You want your item to be sold in Best Buy or on Amazon or whatever, you have to have this label or we're going to feature the products that have this label,” said Cranor. This proposed label is for when you're buying a smart device, but there's already a recently created tool to find out about the smart cameras or location trackers you didn't buy that you may encounter around the city. The IoT Assistant app will notify you how your data is being collected by those devices. You can download it for free in the App Store or Google Play. 1969

Washington Capitals forward Devante Smith-Pelly was allegedly on the receiving end of taunts from fans in Chicago's United Center, forcing security to remove several of those responsible for the chants. After Smith-Pelly was penalized for fighting with the Blackhawks' Connor Murphy, he could be seen tapping his stick on the glass of the penalty box and confronting a group of fans. According to the Washington Post, one of the penalty box officials contacted arena security to have the fans removed. Smith-Pelly said the fans chanted "basketball, basketball, basketball" at Smith-Pelly. Smith-Pelly, a 25-year-old Canadian, is one of roughly two dozen black players currently in the NHL. "I just heard some chanting, some racially charged chanting I guess, and you could tell by my reaction, I got pretty upset," Smith-Pelly said on Sunday. "What was said this time around crossed the line."Smith-Pelly said this is not the first time an incident like this has happened. "It has happened in hockey before, it has happened to people we personally know, (my father and I) have had this conversation before," Smith-Pelly said. "A few ignorant people being idiots, that's it." NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman issued a statement on Sunday supporting the decision to eject the fans. "The National Hockey League condemns this unacceptable and reprehensible behavior," Bettman said. "The League fully supports the actions taken by the United Center and the Blackhawks to eject the offenders and would expect the same response to any similarly unacceptable behavior at any of our arenas."While this incident was isolated in nature, no player, coach, official or fan should ever have to endure such abuse at one of our games. The League will take steps to have our clubs remind all stakeholders that they are entitled to enjoy a positive environment - free from unacceptable, inappropriate, disruptive, inconsiderate or unruly behaviors or actions and may not engage in conduct deemed detrimental to that experience."According to the Washington Post, Capitals coach Barry Trotz said that Smith-Pelly was upset after Saturday's game. “There’s absolutely no place in the game of hockey or our country for racism,” Trotz said. “I think it’s disgusting, and there’s no place for it. Athletes in our country don’t deserve that. It just shows ignorance.”Fellow black NHL star J.T. Brown spoke out on Twitter involving Saturday's incident. "Hockey is for everyone," Brown said. "If you think black athletes should only play basketball, than you clearly don’t know much about sports. There’s no room for racism in the rink or anywhere."Smith-Pelly said that he had the same comments made toward him in the past, but brushed them off then. This time, he was not going to brush off the comments. "It is disgusting, it is sad that in 2018, we are still talking about the same thing over and over," he said. "It is sad that athletes like myself 30, 40 years ago were standing in the same spot saying the same thing. You would think there would be some change or progression." 3136

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Monday is the final day to register to vote in several states. In order to vote in the general election, residents of the following states must be registered by October 5:ArizonaArkansasFloridaGeorgiaHawaiiIndianaKentuckyMississippiOhioSouth CarolinaTennesseeTexasIf you live in one of the states above and you believe you’re already registered, it doesn’t hurt check the status of your registration, just in case anything has changed.Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, most states have expanded their vote-by-mail opportunities, so Americans can vote safely this fall. The U.S. Postal Service, which will play a huge roll in this election, strongly recommends that voters request their mail-in ballots at the earliest point allowable, but no later than 15 days prior to Election Day.The USPS also recommends that voters mail their ballots at least one week prior to their states' due dates to allow for timely receipt by election officials. If you don’t want to rely on the USPS to deliver your ballot to election officials, many communities provide locations where you can drop your ballot off yourself. You can also still vote in person on Election Day. Most states are taking extra steps to ensure voters don't contract or spread the novel coronavirus at the polls. 1296

WASHINGTON, D.C. – As restrictions are eased around the country, several states are seeing higher rates of coronavirus infections.Data tracked by The Washington Post shows that since the beginning of June, 14 states and Puerto Rico have recorded their highest seven-day average of new COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began. Those states include Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Kentucky, New Mexico, North Carolina, Mississippi, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Utah, according to The Post.CNN reports that the number of states seeing upward trends in coronavirus cases is even higher, at 22.With many of these states, like Florida and Mississippi, now under only minor-to-moderate restrictions, health experts worry the spread of the virus could snowball in these areas and possibly overwhelm hospitals. The first wave of the pandemic moved through major metropolitan areas, like New York City and Los Angeles, but those cities are now moving towards reopening. Now, The Post reports that the highest percentages of new cases are coming from places with much smaller populations. As of Tuesday, more than 111,000 people have died from COVID-19 in the U.S. and over 1.96 million cases have been confirmed in the country, according to a running tally by Johns Hopkins University. There is some good news though. Researchers at Berkley University found that travel restrictions, business and school closures, shelter-in-place orders and other non-pharmaceutical interventions averted roughly 530 million COVID-19 infections across the six countries in the study period ending April 6.Of those infections, 62 million would likely have been “confirmed cases,” given limited testing in each country, researchers said. 1745
