lNEW YORK, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Since global leaders established the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2000, China has achieved remarkable progress in achieving the grand targets.As the world's largest developing nation, China has pursued the way of peace and development, adopted policies of gender equality, resource conservation and environmental protection, and taken action to advance the implementation of the MDGs.The MDGs were established in 2000 at the Millennium Summit in New York.World leaders pledged there to do their utmost to attain the goals by 2015, including slashing poverty, fighting disease, halting environmental degradation and boosting health.According to UN reports, global progress on poverty reduction was largely due to the reduction of hunger in China.Since 1990, poverty, especially absolute poverty in rural areas, has been greatly reduced, according to the UN Development Program (UNDP).China has now achieved the target of halving the number of poor people from the 1990 figure of 85 million, and thus has realized the target of halving the proportion of people living in extreme poverty.An MDGs report issued in June noted that the sharpest reductions in poverty continued to be recorded in East Asia. Poverty rates in China were expected to fall to around 5 percent by 2015.Some of the MDGs, including those on primary education, have already been achieved in China 13 years in advance. The mortality rate of children under five dropped from 61 per 1,000 births in 1991 to 25 in 2004. The maternal mortality ratio decreased from 89 per 100,000 live births in 1990 to 51.3 in 2003.

GUANGZHOU, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in south China's Guangzhou, host city of the 2010 Asian Games, Saturday said it will cancel a newly-launched free public transportation service due to the enormous public response, which might pose a security threat to the Asian Games.The government earlier this month launched the color-coding scheme for vehicles, effectively grounding half of the city's 2.1 million private cars and those entering the city each day during the Asian Games.As a remedy, free public transport service was to be offered for 30 working days beginning November 1.The offer was met with unprecedented enthusiasm from Guangzhou residents. For days, subway trains were often crammed and stations were full as swarms of people lined up to take a free ride.Now, officials with Guangzhou's transportation authorities said they had to rescind the offer as more than 8 million passengers took the subway on an average day beginning November 1, a figure "much, much higher" than the subway system was designed to carry.Further, traffic controls were put into force 144 times during the week, which "seriously affects the normal security checks required for the Games" and causes "great inconvenience," officials said.Guangzhou authorities plan to roll back the free-day scheme on Nov. 8 and replace it with a cash subsidy program in which each household in Guangzhou will receive 150 yuan as a transportation subsidy from the government.The Asian Games are scheduled to begin on November 12, featuring 11,700 athletes competing in 42 sports.

GUIYANG, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- China Wednesday called for the European Union to have a balanced, objective, comprehensive understanding of the world's largest developing country during an upgraded strategic dialogue held in the underdeveloped province of Guizhou.State Councilor Dai Bingguo told the EU side that despite rapid economic growth, China has no possibility to be arrogant, nor is it pretending to be a richer or poorer country than it actually is, with unfathomable strategic intentions, according to Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying."China expects the EU to treat itself as an equal," Dai was quoted by Fu as telling EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton.The meeting was the fifth strategic dialogue between the two sides and the first since it was upgraded from vice foreign-minister level to its current level.China had made remarkable achievements since its reform and opening up to the outside, but it is still a developing country, Dai said.China has a clear understanding of its position in the international arena and its current level of development, Dai said, adding it will focus on economic development in the long run.China has not been, nor is, nor will be in the pursuit of hegemony, but adheres to the path of peaceful development, Dai said.China needs a peaceful international environment for development and its development will promote global peace and development, he said.Ashton echoed Dai, saying that the European Union should have a comprehensive understanding of China.The EU's view of China's development was one topic of the one-day closed-door meeting."It is one major aim of this strategic dialogue to enhance mutual understanding between China and the European Union. TIANJIN, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Coca Cola, the world's largest beverage maker, will begin operations at its largest bottling plant in China, a 900-million-yuan (132-million-US dollar) investment in Luohe City of central China's Henan province, by the end of October this year."We are very positive and committed to our growth here in China," said Glenn Jordan, president of Coca Cola Pacific Region, during an exclusive interview with Xinhua while attending the fourth Summer Davos forum held in north China's port city of Tianjin, on Monday.The soft-drink giant already operates 39 plants in China. It opened three new plants in Jiangxi Province, Hubei Province and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region last year. Also, it now has two factories under construction, including the largest one in Henan and the other in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.Statistics from the company showed its investment in the new plant in Hubei Province has reached 600 million yuan, while the cost of the two-phase project in Jiangxi Province added up to 250 million yuan.Jordan said these are all parts of Coca Cola's three-year, 2-billion-US dollar investment plan in China announced last March, and the project is now "well on track" in terms of infrastructure, marketing and product development.Jordan believes the expansion was good for both sides. "On average, we are hiring around 10 people per day in the Coca Cola system and putting almost 1,000 coolers per day in the market."The investment package also includes a 90-million-US dollar innovation and research center in Shanghai. One new beverage created at the center last November was Minute Maid Pulpy Super Milky, which combines fruit juice, milk powder, whey protein and coconut bits to create a creamy fruit-flavored dairy drink."The Shanghai research center has been very productive and very rewarding," Jordan said, "We have already taken some of its innovations and technologies to other parts of Asia and to the world's markets."As for the business environment in China, Jordan believes the country is moving in a better direction, as it has continuously improved its business operating rules and regulations."We have been here for more than 30 years, during which China has changed rapidly.
