A Texas mother was diagnosed with blood cancer earlier this year. Doctors didn't expect her to make it, until a bishop from Corpus Christi stepped in. Bishop Michael Mulvey registered to be a marrow donor over 10 years ago. He said after a few years he had forgot about it, but when he received the call, he rose to the occasion, ultimately saving this woman’s life. A Texas mother of three was diagnosed with blood cancer and was no longer producing the healthy blood cells she needed to survive. But through ‘Be the Match’, a national marrow donor program she found a perfect blood stem cell match in a man named Michael Mulvey. “Somehow I was chosen beyond the DNA that I have,” said Mulvey. Bishop Michael Mulvey had added his name to the ‘Be the Match’ registry years ago when he served as a pastor for a parish near Austin. “It was a jarring of the memory to be honest with you I had pretty much forgotten that I had signed up,” said Mulvey. But when he received the phone call, that would ultimately save a woman’s life, he says there was no hesitation, but rather an easy decision to give someone a second chance at life. “We do a lot for people, but this was something very person,” said Mulvey. “To think that someone somewhere in the world needed what I had I felt gratification that I could give something that was given to me to someone else.”Due to privacy laws, the mother's identity is not yet being revealed. But Bishop Mulvey says he hopes she's still fighting on, and he'll always feel connected to her, whoever she is.“I prayed for her the whole time and it was an amazing thing thinking that your blood is leaving you but it’s also coming back to you and to see that the life that could be given to another person,” said Mulvey. Every three minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer. ‘Be the Match’ helps connect people from all over the world by collecting just a cheek swab sample from people willing to help save a life, through either bone marrow or blood stem cell donations. Alabama sent the most restrictive abortion bill in the country to the governor's desk Tuesday night, with the state's Senate passing legislation that could punish doctors who perform abortions with life in prison. The state's Republican backers have pushed the legislation, which amounts to a near-total ban on abortion in the state, forward with the express goal of overturning Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court case legalizing abortion. Alabama lawmakers join legislators in several other states in putting forth legislation to restrict abortion, such as Georgia's recent fetal heartbeat bill. After more than four hours of debate, the Republican-led Senate voted 25-6 to pass HB 314, which would slap doctors with up to 99 years in prison for performing an abortion. The Alabama House passed the bill earlier this month. The law only allows exceptions "to avoid a serious health risk to the unborn child's mother," for ectopic pregnancy and if the "unborn child has a lethal anomaly." Democrats re-introduced an amendment to exempt rape and incest victims, but the motion failed on an 11-21 vote.Republican Gov. Kay Ivey will have six days to sign the legislation, though the bill would not take effect until six months after becoming law. Ivey has not publicly taken a stance on the bill but has previously aligned herself as anti-abortion, 1351

A shop selling President Donald Trump-themed merchandise in a strip mall in suburban Philadelphia has emerged as a magnet for the president’s backers and a reflection of Pennsylvania’s status as a political battleground this year. The Trump Store in Bensalem sells hats, T-shirts, mugs, water bottles and even an inflatable Trump-shaped innertube. On a recent weekday afternoon, it did steady business over about three hours, with two to three customers continually streaming in and out. Bensalem, in Bucks County, voted for the Democrat in the last two presidential elections despite Republicans’ cutting into Democrats’ margins. Trump won Pennsylvania over Hillary Clinton by less than 1 percentage point in 2012.Photo caption: In this Thursday, Feb. 13, 2020, photo, a man walks to The Trump Store in Bensalem, Pa.
