BEIJING, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Sudanese Mining Minister Abdel-Bagi Gailani said here Monday that Sudan is seeking to strengthen cooperation with China in the mining sector.Sudan is a vast country with rich mineral resources, said the minister. However, the country's abundant mineral resources are yet to be explored and utilized due to various reasons such as technical and financial constraints, he told Xinhua.Sudan welcomes and encourages Chinese companies to do business and to invest in his country, hoping that the two countries could diversify mutually beneficial cooperation, said Gailani.Sudan aims to utilize its resources in an efficient and rational manner through sharing China's advanced technologies and learning from the country's rich experiences and increasing financial input in the mining sector in a bid to step up the development of its national economy, the minister added.Gailani was in China for the 12th China Mining Congress & Expo, which will be held in the northern port city of Tianjin from Tuesday to Thursday.The annual event is expected to attract more than 3,000 participants from over 50 countries and regions.

BRUSSELS, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and EU leaders on Tuesday signed a first joint declaration on strengthening dialogue and cooperation on youth issues as the 2011 EU-China Year of Youth kicked off here.Androulla Vassiliou, EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, said at the opening ceremony that the year would open up new horizons for young people from Europe and China by enabling them to share experiences and learn from each other."I hope that such exchanges will inspire concrete ideas for cooperation and establish long-lasting partnerships," Vassiliou said.The opening ceremony was the first of a series of exchange activities to be held throughout the year in Europe and China. BEIJING, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Officials from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development on Friday ordered local governments to begin a campaign to inspect projects under construction to eliminate safety risks in the wake of recent fire accidents.Local authorities should work on "effective prevention of accidents" and improve safety, especially in winter when fire and gas poisoning accidents tend to be more frequent, the ministry said in a statement on its website.Special monitoring should be undertaken of reconstruction work and of projects involving the expansion of existing buildings, it said, urging a "serious" crackdown on illegal practices during building operations, according to the statement.The notice followed the call from the State Council on Wednesday demanding tougher fire prevention measures, after a blaze Monday gutted a high-rise apartment building in Shanghai, killing at least 58 people, and another fire engulfed a 99-year-old building at Tsinghua University in Beijing on Nov. 13.
