SHENZHEN: A student at an IT college in Zhuhai, South China's Guangdong Province, ran amok on Tuesday, stabbing six of his classmates, police said Wednesday.One of the victims suffered a deep gash to the neck, which required intensive care treatment, but he is said to be in a stable condition.The 21-year-old attacker, surnamed Chen, was later arrested and is now in custody. He is believed to be suffering from a mental illness, a spokeswoman for the Zhuhai public security bureau told China Daily yesterday.She refused to give any further information, however, as the case is still under investigation.According to a report by the Guangzhou-based Southern Metropolis Daily, the incident happened at about 10:40 am at the start of a new class.Witnesses said Chen pulled out a 15-cm-long fruit knife and "casually" stabbed the two people sitting next to him and in front of him."I saw blood gushing from one boy's throat and another had been stabbed in the right side of his neck," the newspaper quoted one witness, who asked not to be named, as saying.Chen then attacked four other classmates, as they and their teacher attempted to escape the room, the witness said.After the attack, Chen remained in the classroom.A teacher locked the door from the outside and called police, the Guangzhou Daily reported.Police arrived soon after and arrested him.The victims were taken to a nearby hospital. Three of them had been stabbed in the neck while the others had suffered wounds to their arms and wrists, a source from the hospital said.A spokeswoman for the school, surnamed Cui, said the school authorities will issue a formal statement once the police have concluded their investigation.Students and teachers were receiving counseling to help them deal with the incident, she told China Daily.According to the Guangzhou Daily, Chen, who lives in Zhuhai, attacked a classmate while he was at university in Wuhan, in Central China's Hubei Province. He was later expelled.

BEIJING, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met here on Friday with former U.S. President George Bush.     Hailing the progress of China-U.S. relations in recent years, Hu said that to develop healthy, stable bilateral ties was in the common interest of both sides and had great significance for peace and development of the Asian-Pacific region and the world at large.     China was willing to properly handle divergence and major concerns through dialogue and beef up bilateral exchanges and cooperation on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, Hu said.     He said that he appreciated Bush's efforts to boost China-U.S. friendship. He also briefed the former U.S. leader about China's stance on the Taiwan issue and its preparations for the Beijing Olympic Games.     Calling U.S.-China relations one of the world's most important bilateral ties, Bush said that he was happy with the development of the progress of bilateral relations and expressed confidence that there would be even closer ties with China. China's disciplinary watchdog posthumously stripped a former senior political adviser of his membership in the Communist Party of China for leading a "dissolute lifestyle and serious violations of Party discipline." Song Pingshun, former chairman of the Tianjin Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, an advisory body to the parliament in the northern port city of Tianjin, was discovered dead on June 3. A police investigation determined he had committed suicide. The CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection decided to take the rare step of posthumous expulsion after finding that Song had "abused his public power to seek benefits for his mistress, seriously violating CPC discipline." "Song, morally degenerate, kept a mistress and helped her obtain money through illegal means," the discipline watchdog said. Song, 61, a native of northern China's Hebei Province, became the top political adviser in Tianjin, a booming municipality directly under the central government, in March 2006. He had also served as vice mayor, police chief and secretary of the Tianjin CPC Political Science and Law Commission, which is in charge of the city's police and legal sectors. The CPC expelled 21,120 members last year for breaking its rules, mainly for taking bribes. According to the report, Chinese consumers are experiencing unprecedented wealth growth which is 3 to 5 times faster than developed countries in the past 50 years. Most Chinese consumers plan to spend more in near future to fulfill their family dreams."The past decade of rapid economic growth has brought prosperity but also uncertainty, resulting in a highly complex consumer market with diverse consumer attitudes," said Hubert Hsu, senior partner and managing director of BCG, at a press conference in Beijing."Capturing the next wave of consumer growth in China will involve developing deep consumer insights and creating marketing differentiation," said Hsu.The report said there are significant generational differences in terms of spending attitude among Chinese consumers. The strong interest in trading up, which means spending more money for more expensive products, was driven up by consumers' increasing desire for better goods and services and rising concern over safety and quality of cheap products.Chinese consumers put more faith in brand names compared with the US consumers and they believe good brand represents quality, safety, effectiveness and durability, said Hsu.Despite strong trading up desires, Chinese consumers continue to "treasure hunt" - make deliberate trade-offs to maximize "value" of their budgets. They use similar strategies for treasure hunting as their counterparts in other countries except several unusual tactics such as group purchase for volume discount, said the report.The report suggested global suppliers in China should establish strong, branded relationships with China's treasure-hunting consumers, provide the kinds of products that appeal to practical concerns and emotional needs, and be willing to customize their offerings to meet the needs of a geographically diverse population.While the retailers must make sure the categories they carry are the ones that treasure-hunting consumers will seek and focus on a product's technical and emotional benefits, said the report.

WASHINGTON -- Financial systems in Asia appear well placed to handle the effects of the global financial market turbulence that broke out in July, said a report released by the International Monetary Fund on Friday.The report, Regional Economic Outlook: Asia and Pacific, explained that Asia was not at the epicenter of the recent turmoil, and markets and financial institutions in the region have been less affected to date than those in the United States and Europe."This reflects the relatively small direct exposure to US subprime mortgages and, more broadly, to leveraged and complex structured credit products, including by hedge funds," said the report.But it also warned that markets have begun to normalize somewhat at the time of this writing, although much uncertainty remains.The report expressed optimism about Asia's future economic performance, saying growth has been stronger than expected across much of the region, with domestic demand making an increasing contribution in a number of economies."China and India continued to lead the way, with high growth backed by strong investment, although the contribution of net exports to growth in China continues to rise," said the report."The pace of activity in the NIEs and ASEAN-5 remained solid, with strong investment in the former and strong consumption in the latter," the report added.The NIEs, or Newly Industrialized Economies, refers to Hong Kong and Taiwan of China, South Korea, Singapore. ASEAN-5 refers to Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.China is expected to increase 11.5 percent in 2007 and 10.0 percent in 2008, while India is projected to expand 8.9 percent this year and 8.4 percent next year.The Asian economies as a whole will grow robustly at 8.0 percent this year and moderately to a still-brisk 6.9 percent next year, said the report.
