SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The cost of housing in California isn’t just affecting first-time home buyers, it’s also taking a toll on retirees, according to a report from Global Atlantic Financial Group. The research, based on data from more than 4,000 people nationwide, found that retirees in California spend nearly ,575 a month: 30 percent more than the average retiree in the U.S. at ,008.Housing costs that build up during working years also take a toll. Nearly half of California’s non-retired residents ages 40 and up owe an average of 4,876 on their mortgages, compared to the national average of 4,770. Global Atlantic claims that sky-high housing expenses force California residents to make sacrifices during retirement, including cutbacks on restaurants and entertainment, travel and vacations and charitable giving. Almost 40 percent of retirees nationwide are spending more than they expected."Many Americans adjust their lifestyles and cut spending once they see how quickly costs can add up in retirement," says Paula Nelson of Global Atlantic. She says it's an important lesson for those currently in the workforce to understand. "While older retirees are collecting income from employer-sponsored retirement plans, such as pensions, younger and future retirees may not receive the same benefits. Not only have pensions gradually become less common, but the data shows that younger retirees are also less likely to have much saved in other defined contribution plans, like 401(k)s," says Nelson.More than half of retirees wish they'd handled their financial planning differently, according to analysts. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The man accused of fatally stabbing a motorist seven times in the South Bay during a road rage dispute was convicted of second-degree murder Friday.Jurors found Rickey Vernon Smith, 60, guilty after only one day of deliberations in the Nov. 27, 2018, slaying of 36-year-old Horace Williams Jr.Smith is set to be sentenced on Dec. 11.RELATED: Local man brings families light in times of needThe road rage confrontation between Smith and Williams came to a head near Chula Vista Golf Course, after the two argued along several roadways last November. Williams reportedly threw a soda cup at Smith's vehicle before Smith struck Williams' minivan.Prosecutors say Smith then got out of his truck after cutting Williams off, walked over to his driver's side window, punched Williams in the face and walked away, until walking back and stabbing Williams several times with a knife.Witnesses said Williams got out of his van and collapsed in the roadway, bleeding heavily. During a 911 call after the stabbing, Smith told a dispatcher Williams had cut him off and threw a drink at his truck. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Downtown Central Courthouse plans to resume jury trials in two weeks after a six-month postponement during the shutdown, but there are concerns about the massive backlog of cases and keeping jurors safe. Non-jury trials are currently in progress through a remote virtual process.“I do have an incredible backlog, not only in criminal but also in civil cases,” said San Diego Superior Court Presiding Judge Lorna Alksne on Monday. So far, 900 jury duty summonses have been sent out for telephonic standby for in-person appearances in groups of 70 people. “The jury lounge [holds] 500 to 600 people but instead of that were going to bring in 70 [people and] socially distance them,” she added.Those people who are selected for jury will sit in courtrooms which have been retrofitted with protective measures like plexiglass barriers. Judge Alksne said there around about 2,400 criminal cases ready for trial that must be reset. Beyond that, there are thousands of other criminal proceedings to get to. “There's about 17,000 other things that need to be reset before they can even get to a trial,” she added.Civil cases are another obstacle. A spokesperson for the Courthouse confirmed that there are approximately 54,000 civil cases that are pending. There are about 2,800 that are ready to go to trial but Judge Alksne said Monday that civil jury trials likely won't resume until sometime in 2021.“The only way that I'm going to beat this backlog is if jurors come in for jury service so if you feel like you're able to serve, we would ask you to respond to the summons and come into court and help us get the jury trials started again,” she added.She noted that civil bench trials will start in mid-October and in-person arraignments will start on November 1st. 1792

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The County Board of Supervisors voted to temporarily ban the sale of flavored e-cigarettes and combustible tobacco product in unincorporated areas of San Diego.Supervisors Nathan Fletcher and Dianne Jacob, first proposed the ordinance in October in response to the nationwide epidemic of serious lung injuries linked to "electronic smoking devices, the alarming uptake in e-cigarette use by teens, and the terrible toll of combustible tobacco (cigarettes, cigars, little cigars) on San Diegans."There have been a reported 43 cases of vaping-related lung injuries in San Diego County. There haven't been any local deaths, but all patients have had to be hospitalized. Those affected range in age from 17 to 70 years old, according to the county.As stewards of public health, the County has a responsibility to act in the interest of the public health. The ordinances the Board passed today to restrict the sale and use of smoking and vaping products in unincorporated areas of the County will save lives," said Supervisor Fletcher after the ordinances passed. The proposed policy aims to curb secondhand smoke exposure for restaurant patrons, as well as the service industry employees, by restricting smoking at outdoor areas in unincorporated parts of the county.San Diego is now among the several dozen counties across the state that have passed ordinances prohibiting or restricting the sale of flavored tobacco products.A second meeting on the ordinances will be held on Jan. 28. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Coast Guard is searching for three people after a fishing vessel caught fire Saturday night, sending two people to the hospital and leading to the rescue of 15 more.According to the Coast Guard, the crew of a 42-foot fishing vessel named “Time Machine” called to report seeing a fire at 9:35 p.m. 28 miles south of Point Loma. The good Samaritans aboard the boat were able to pull 15 people out of the water, including two who were injured.10News spoke to the captain and crew of "Time Machine."Captain Mike Koesterer and his crew were on their way back into San Deigo from a fishing trip in Baja California when he saw an explosion in international waters. "I saw an orange flash," he said. For the next 20 minutes, he drove his vessel closer to the ball of fire. The next thing he saw will be etched in his mind forever. “We thought it might be a few people. But we kept on counting and counting and counting," Koesterer said.In the water, he and his crew witnessed 15 people screaming for help. Some had life vests. Others were wading. That's when his son Reeve changed into his diving suit and jumped in to help.“I knew there were going to be burns, but I didn’t think it would be that bad,” Reeve Koesterer said. He first pulled up a woman without a life vest. She desperately grabbed his hair and used Koesterer as a floatation device. The next few rescues were a blur. One by one, he carried and pulled the burn victims onto the "Time Machine." During the rescue, one of the victims told Reeve Koesterer that this was part of a human smuggling operation. “Do whatever we can to get them out of the water. No matter what the case is. They’re still lives,” Reeve Koesterer said. Andy Vo is usually responsible for shooting and editing fishing videos for the "Time Machine's" charter trips. Last night, he was also documenting the rescue on his phone. As the Koesterers were pulling people on board, Vo comforted the victims-- giving them blankets and coffee. “People that we rescued. He called us angels," Vo said. What are the odds that a fishing boat carrying Reeve Koesterer--  a young, bilingual English Spanish speaker, expert diver -- would be right there to save those lives?
