CINCINNATI, Ohio — Tommie Smith made history with a gesture in 1968, when he raised a single black-gloved fist on the Olympic podium after placing first in the 200-meter race. The silent, peaceful act of protest on behalf of oppressed people across the globe -- particularly in South Africa, where Apartheid reigned, and in the United States, where the Civil Rights Act was just four years old -- attracted censure, professional blacklisting and even death threats from people who witnessed it.That didn't stop Smith from fighting racial inequality wherever he saw it.Half a century later, it still hasn't."The darker the skin, the more problems you have when it comes to equity, and I'm there to find out why," Smith said Tuesday night at Cincinnati's National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. "Why can't we do better with the emergencies that's needed to keep people alive?"He partnered with Cradle Cincinnati to raise awareness of Ohio's disproportionately high infant mortality rate among black children. According to the Ohio Department of Health, black babies are nearly three times more likely than white to die before their first birthday. This holds true across all parental income levels, which might otherwise be an indicator of the type of medical care mothers and newborns do or do not receive. Experts aren't exactly sure why this happens or how to fix it. Smith, whose parents lost two babies before he was born, isn't either. That's why he believes it's so important to keep drawing attention to the problem. Raising awareness can keep pressure on people with the power to investigate and make changes, and it can help black parents learn about an often-unspoken danger."There's nobody else to be their front door," he said. "I've always been a front door."Smith's speech kicked off a Cincinnati Children's Hospital-organized summit surrounding the issue of infant mortality. The event, which will run through Wednesday at the Duke Energy Convention Center, was expected to attract over 1,000 health care and social work professionals.RELATED: How Tommie Smith ended up playing for the Bengals. 2151

CITRUS COUNTY, Florida — A woman was attacked by an alligator on Wednesday while she was swimming in a lake in Citrus County, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. The FWC says 24-year-old Felicitie Marie Gillette was swimming in Lake Hernando around 1 a.m. when an alligator grabbed her by the left arm and began to drag her underwater. She was reportedly able to fight off the alligator and call 911 for help.Gillette was taken to Ocala Regional Hospital for treatment of her injuries. According to the FWC, she was treated and released. She sustained non-life threatening injuries. The alligator is believed to 5 to 6-feet long. The FWC and the Citrus County Sheriff's Office are working to catch the alligator. A trapper has also been called to the scene. The public beach access to Lake Hernando is closed while a wildlife trapper searches for the alligator.Families who visit the lake say they've seen an alligator swim along the beach's public access area."The alligator was on the hunt," said Dennis Weis. "You could tell by the aggressive movements by the alligator."Dennis Weis shared cell phone video with ABC Action News showing an alligator roaming in the water near the beach, just a few days before the attack. Weis believes that people were feeding the alligator."When the kids jumped into the water over there, he would go up over there, go under," said Weis.FWC says the victim is currently homeless.FWC wants to remind the public that if anyone believes a specific alligator poses a threat to people, pets or property, they should immediately call the toll-free Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR or 866-392-4286. 1667

CINCINNATI, Ohio — A settlement has been reached after a police officer used a Taser on an 11-year-old girl while working an off-duty detail at a Kroger in Southwest Ohio. The City of Cincinnati and Kroger have agreed to pay the family of Donesha Gowdy 0,000 to settle the claim of excessive force, according to a news release from family attorney Al Gerhardstein.Donesha had been shoplifting from the Kroger on Aug. 6 when Officer Kevin Brown, who was on security duty, ordered her to stop. She didn't. The officer fired his Taser as she walked away. One probe struck her at the base of her spine; the other hit between her shoulder blades. The incident prompted an apology from Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley and a promise from Vice Mayor Christopher Smitherman to review Cincinnati Police Department’s protocol on Tasers.Cincinnati Police Chief Eliot K. Isaac promised “a very thorough review” of Brown's actions, as well as the department’s use-of-force policies as they pertain to juvenile suspects. He said he's "extremely concerned when force is used by one of our officers on a child of this age."Smitherman, along with the girl's mother, also say the policy needs to change. The settlement did not include plans to change police department policy, and it must be approved by probate court.Donesha wrote this apology to Kroger: “I Donesha Gowdy is writing this letter to apologize to the Kroger company … to say I’m sorry for stealing from the store in will not do it again.”WCPO television station in Cincinnati has reached out to the City of Cincinnati and Kroger for comment. 1629

CVS and Walgreens are gearing up to give coronavirus vaccines - in long-term care facilities, not retail stores - once the FDA approves one for emergency use.According to CNN, CVS would administer the shots by mid-December, and Walgreens plans to start distributing within days of receiving them.In October, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced agreements with both companies to give vaccinations to long-term care facility residents nationwide with no out-of-pocket costs.According to the HHS, both companies will schedule and coordinate on-site clinic date(s) directly with each facility. The HHS said that residents and staff would likely need three total visits over two months to be given both vaccine doses."CVS Health has been on the frontlines of the fight against COVID-19, working across the health care spectrum in all the communities we serve, and that will continue to be the case when we have a vaccine to dispense," said Troy Brennan, Chief Medical Officer, CVS Health in a press release. On Tuesday, the CDC's Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices is having an emergency meeting, which will take place from 2-5 p.m. ET, to vote on who they recommend should be the first in the U.S. to get vaccinated once one is authorized. 1281
