It's a historical donation and more than two-dozen organizations will benefit.When the pandemic hit, it was the National Guard handing out food, helping at blood centers, and helping states during periods of civil unrest.You'll see the guard, but what you don't see are the people who support those National Guard members.“We had the largest deployment of National Guard ever in our history,” ? says Kathy Roth-Douquet, a military spouse and the founder and CEO of Blue Star Families.On top of that deployment, other military service members are facing stop order movements because of the pandemic.“All the folks who were deployed and due to come home, they couldn’t come home and people had deployment extended for three months or more,” Roth-Douquet said. “So that family whose spouse had been home with their kids suddenly found their kid out of daycare, out of childcare and that spouse that was supposed to help couldn’t come home.”With so many spouses stuck, Roth-Douquet launched Blue Star Families back in 2009 because she, like many military families, needed help.“We found ourselves living a lifestyle with our families that required a very heavy for lift for us,” Roth-Douquet said. “It’s an honor to serve your country, but you have a responsibility for your family to thrive. USAA then committed million to the Military Family Relief initiative, which will help two-dozen military and general aid non-profits, including Blue Star Families. It’s the largest one-time philanthropic contribution in USAA"s nearly 100-year history.“This million will help augment the reduction in fundraising and the increased need that’s happening with military families,” said Harriet Dominique, who manages philanthropic strategies and contributions for USAA.“We know that military families as they’re serving our nation taking care of us and our freedoms have challenge and stressors. Those challenges have been increased by financial impacts and career and employment impacts of COVID-19,” Dominique said.For Dominique, this is personal. Her dad and brother served and her nephew is a reservist. Some of the organizations that will benefit are the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, The Institute for Veterans and Military Families, and "Hiring Our Heroes.”“When we talk about military spouses who have lost their job because of COVID and we know their service member and they need financial stability and the investment in hiring our heroes for financial security, we know we’re making a difference,” Dominique said. 3408

While most people seek safety during danger, Ebonique Johnson actually hurries to the frontlines.“I’m running towards it because that’s where I’m needed the most,” said Johnson, a nursing student at Georgia State University in Atlanta.Set to graduate in December, she’s looking to land a job at an ICU.“I want to be where I’m needed,” Johnson said. “I want to help the COVID patients.”That help could come sooner or later depending on where she gets a job.Some states are waiving certain regulations and allowing nursing students to enter the workforce more easily. Other states, however, have prevented nursing students from working with COVID-19 patients altogether.“We can’t hit the pause button with what’s going on, nurses are needed now more than ever,” said Dr. Regena Spratling, associate dean for GSU’s school of nursing.She says coronavirus concerns have limited student access to hospitals for hands-on clinical training and that more courses are now being taught online.“We’re really focusing on what they would be doing within the health care system as far as taking care of patients,” Spratling said. Despite changes, GSU is seeing more people looking to join its nursing program.For GSU nursing student Phillip Parnell, this pandemic is personal.“One of my older relatives recently passed away with the virus,” he said.The army veteran is now making his second career his first priority.“When it hits home, it’s a different level of intensity,” Parnell said.The Bureau of Labor Statistics says the health care industry needs more than 200,000 new nurses each year through 2026 just to replace retiring nurses.“Although we never thought we would see a pandemic in our lifetime, it’s here,” Johnson said.GSU students are happy to be leading the next generation of nurses while also fighting COVID-19 on the frontlines.“We answer the call to be there for people,” Johnson said. “It’s our time to show up.” 1925

When cruise lines begin sailing again, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has some guidance. The health agency issued their “framework for resuming safe and responsible cruise ship” operations Friday, ahead of the no-sail order expiring Saturday.The no-sail order, which originally began in April, prohibits cruise ships from carrying 250 passengers in waters subject to US jurisdiction.The CDC said it has identified at least 3,689 coronavirus-related illnesses, and 41 associated deaths, connected to cruise ships. Although the CDC cautions these figures are likely an underestimate.The framework urges a phased approach, and applies to ships that have the capacity to carry at least 250 passengers in waters subject to U.S. jurisdiction.“A phased approach is necessary because of the continued spread of the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide, risk of resurgence in countries that have suppressed transmission, ongoing concerns related to restarting of cruising internationally, and need for additional time for the cruise industry to test the effectiveness of measures to control potential COVID-19 transmission on board cruise ships with passengers without burdening public health,” a statement from the CDC reads.During the beginning, cruise line operators will have to demonstrate adherence to testing, quarantine and isolation plans, as well as social distancing requirements for passengers and crew members.The CDC says they will help by “establishing a laboratory team dedicated to cruise ships to provide information and oversight of COVID-19 testing,” updating instructions and creating a system to track ship status and passenger cases.Meanwhile, cruise lines will need to build out the capacity and ability to test crew and passengers on a regular basis.In their framework, the CDC says there may be simulated, or mock, voyages with volunteers to test cruise ship operators’ ability to apply COVID-19 mitigation measures.Although the no-sail order will be lifted, Carnival, Royal Caribbean and other cruise lines have already cancelled sailings until 2021. 2083

While the national debate continues on whether school teachers should be allowed to posses firearms in classrooms, one Pennsylvania school district is moving forward with arming its teachers... with baseball bats. The Millcreek School District, which is located near Erie, announced it is arming up to 500 teachers with baseball bats in case of an active shooter, WICU-TV reported. The district said it spent ,800 on the 16-inch wooden bats. The bats are not quite the same size used in baseball games. Typical baseball bats are at least 30 inches long. The bats will be locked up, and out of the reach of students. WICU reported that the bats were handed to teachers after a day of training, which included lessons on what to do during an active shooting. "We passed them out, with the goal being we wanted every room to have one of these,” Millcreek School District Superintendent William Hall told WICU. “Unfortunately, we're in a day and age where one might need to use them to protect ourselves and our kids."Hall conceded that the bats are largely symbolic, but it gives teachers an option to fight back with. Millcreek Education Association president Jon Cacchione told WICU that he supports teachers having access to bats. "This is a tool to have in the event we have nothing else,” Cacchione told WICU. "Part of the formula now, is to fight back, and so I think the bats that were provided for the staff were symbolic of that.”Hall said that the district is considering other safety improvements to schools, including arming teachers with firearms. The district has been surveying parents on arming teachers with guns, but it is not actively planning on arming teachers.  1760
