A suspect who had barricaded himself on Tuesday in his Panama City, Florida, home after an earlier shooting was later found dead in the residence, authorities said. The Bay County Sheriff's Office identified the dead suspect as 49-year-old Kevin Robert Holroyd. One person had a minor injury and was transported to a hospital, city spokeswoman Caitlin Lawrence said earlier Tuesday. The hunt for Holroyd, who was wanted in connection with a homicide in Santa Rosa Beach in Walton County, ended with his death about 57 miles southeast in Bay County, after he opened fire on police, the Bay County Sheriff's Office said.Authorities did not say how Holroyd died. The Bay County Sheriff's Office and Panama City police began searching for Holroyd in case he returned to Bay County. Investigators started watching Holroyd's townhome apartment after his vehicle was seen there. During that time, a complex resident called the fire department to report a gas smell, the sheriff's office said. The investigators got out of their cars to find out why firefighters had arrived in the complex parking lot, authorities said. From an upstairs window of the apartment, Holroyd opened fire on the firefighters and investigators, and other responding officers, including Panama City police, the sheriff's office said.About 100 rounds were fired during the gunbattle, the sheriff's office said.At one point, two Panama City officers and a sheriff's deputy were pinned down behind their vehicles by the gunfire, the sheriff's office said.Photos from Eryn Dion of the Panama City News Herald showed a heavy police presence in the area during the standoff.Stacie Houchins said she did not see the incident start, but she decided to go to the scene to see what was going on. She shared photos with CNN of police with weapons drawn. When she arrived on the scene, she said she heard multiple loud gunshots. She said the gunshots seemed like rapid fire.SWAT officers eventually entered the townhome through an upstairs window, and officers found Holroyd's body clad in body armor. The inside of the home had been saturated with gasoline, authorities said.Authorities found several hundred rounds of ammunition, several high-powered rifles and flares, the sheriff's office said. Authorities believe Holroyd had planned to use the flares to ignite the gasoline. No other details on the homicide in Santa Rosa Beach were immediately available.The-CNN-Wire 2429

A public school administrator in Nashville has resigned following the disclosure of a secret recording where he plotted to bypass filters designed to protect children from exposure to lead in their water.Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) executive director of facilities Dennis Neal, resigned Friday, according to MNPS communications director Olivia Brown. Neal had been placed on administrative leave while the district investigated.Neal's resignation came less than a week after Scripps station WTVF in Nashville?uncovered the recording from inside a meeting of schools maintenance employees.Recording Reveals Plan To 'Bypass' Lead FilterFor the past nine months, WVTF has exposed data kept secret by the district showing high lead levels in some Metro schools. Lead is a toxic metal that can cause learning and behavioral problems in children. In response, a number of schools installed special fountains that were supposed to filter out the lead. Some of them were purchased by parents themselves. But the recording revealed Neal's plan to dismantle those efforts.Listen to the audio below:"People keep wanting these bottle fillers, but they are adamant about them being filtered," Neal told his employees. "I'm saying we cannot support it.From the beginning, Neal downplayed the threat posed by lead in the schools' drinking water  -- despite results showing levels well above what pediatricians say is safe. Audio Sparks Outrage, Mayor Calls For AnswerStill, some 30 schools installed hydration stations specifically designed to filter out the lead — some of them purchased by the parents themselves. On the recording, Neal revealed: "I did ask Troy if he would have one of his guys go through the exercise of bypassing the filter just to see how that works."But those fountains are equipped with lights that show when the filters are working and when they need to be replaced. So Neal's team came up with a solution for that, too."We've got to figure out what we are going to do with these hundred, or 97, filtered ones that we have out there," Neal told his subordinates. An unidentified woman interrupted, "Bust the light out.""Huh, do what?" Neal asked."Take the light bulb out," she answered."Well, that's one thing," Neal agreed. "But we need to also probably, if we can, bypass the filter."Neal's concern was money.MNPS Spokesperson Questions Need For Filters"If we were to replace a filter, you're talking — I don't know if any of y'all have bought them  — it's something like 70 or 80 bucks," Neal said.An unidentified man responded, "."Neal said, "That's almost ,000 a year just for filters, OK, on what we have now."After disclosure of the record, Schools Director Dr. Shawn Joseph condemned the comments captured on the recording."As a parent of two Metro Schools children and as the Director of Schools, the idea that a supervisor would discuss a workaround on our water fountains knowing that this is a huge concern for many families is upsetting and unacceptable," Joseph said.Nashville Mayor David Briley also said that "obviously, if the report is true, that person shouldn't  be responsible for protecting our children from lead in their drinking water."  3312

A New York City woman is taking to social media in hopes of using her voice and her story to make a difference for Black women fighting breast cancer. According to the CDC, breast cancer death rates are 40 % higher among Black women then white women.Suzette Simon wears a superhero costume to chemotherapy, and says, she's armed with superhero strength. She's also taking social media by storm, filming things like "live from chemo.""I’ll do a dance duet but then at the bottom, I’ll say yah I’m dancing, but I want you to know 40% of Black women who get cancer die from it,” Simon said. For Simon, this fight is personal. It started 30 years ago when her mom, Aline, a Black woman who had no health insurance, died alone in a New York public hospital at age 62.“I don’t think she had an advocate and I think that’s part of the reason why I do this, because she didn’t have an advocate,” Simon said.“Now that I’m going through my own cancer, I want to use it to advocate for others. I want to use my superpowers,” Simon said. “I come from television. My background is comedy and so I have superpowers. I want to make people happy I want to make people laugh.”She was diagnosed in January and has decided to put her creativity and energy on the internet. She hopes to educate and empower black women.“Harriet Tubman had strong Black boobs, Rosa Parks had strong Black boobs, but they didn’t have a superhero, and 42% of those strong Black boobs got cancer,” Simon said. “Maybe not them, but there are a lot of heroic women with strong Black boobs that got cancer so I’m here to be that superhero for those women with strong Black boobs.”The CDC states that breast cancer is found earlier in white women and that the number of cases is higher among Black women who are younger than 60 years old.Dr. Caroline Elistin, assistant dean of faculty at Chamberlain University College of Nursing, says there's a reason behind the disparities in healthcare.“I believe that trust has something to do with it. In the current workforce diversity amongst physicians is limited- you want the individual who is caring for you and trust them -when they look like you,” said Dr. Elistin said, who works in medical oncology in South Florida. She says breast cancer is just one of the types of cancer she treats.“Mounting evidence suggests when physicians and patients share the same race or ethnicity, it improves the time spent together the medication adherence the decision making- wait times with treatment as well,” Dr. Elistin said. Those in poorer areas she says, don't have the same opportunities, which leads to a lack of success. And that is just one aspect of the societal problem.“Has this breast surgeon ever worked with Black women? It became a journey,” Simon said. “I was not going to be my mom, in a hallway trying to get help. I was not going to be that person.”The #strongblackboobs movement lives on, she says, through smiles and joy, even in pain.“And just laughing through the most difficult time of life- it's a funny time- when you know you could die it's the funniest time ever- you’ve gotta have a good time,” Simon said. And she says, you have to spread the message of awareness, which is just one aspect of her movement to make a difference. 3253
