SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two girls were rescued at Sunset Cliffs by teenage bystanders on Friday after being swept out to sea.Local still photographer Jim Grant was hoping to capture the sunset at Sunset Cliffs Friday evening. But he got much more than just a beauty shot."There were some crazy things going on," Grant said.He ended up witnessing a cliff and water rescue."Two young girls ... They looked to be about 12 or 13," Grant said. "They were down at this point, and a large set came in and swept them off their feet.""The older one hit her head probably down on the reef and had a pretty serious head injury in the water," Lt. Andy Lerum with the San Diego Lifeguards said.Before first responders could arrive on the scene, two boys jumped into the water to help the girls. The two teenage boys worked to keep the girls above water until help arrived, lifeguards said, adding that their efforts were instrumental in saving their lives."It was big surf," Grant remembered. "The girls could not swim or couldn't swim very well, that's for sure. And it just could've been a tragic event if those two guys didn't happen to be here."Grant captured dramatic photos of the rescue, showing responders hoist one of the girls from the cliffs. In the end, Grant did get his sunset shot, just with an amazing cliff rescue in the foreground.Lifeguards remind folks that even in exposed reef areas, strong waves could come crashing at any moment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Underwater robots showcased difficult tasks and the teams in charge of the technology are hoping to take the crown for the 21st International Robosub Competition in Point Loma.A total of 47 teams from 10 different countries came together with one mission, navigate their robots through a tricky underwater course."We have mechanical, electrical, and computer science, and it's all coming together to make one cohesive vehicle,” said David Garcia, one of the team members from Cal State.Students were able to check out each other’s models to learn what sinks and what swims. For those who think the competition is all fun and games, meet Chinoros Nakthewan from Kasetsart University in Bangkok.His team was part of the Thai cave rescue effort. At the time, they determined that his robot wouldn’t be able to reach the survivors, so they resorted to using their other equipment."We made a decision to bring sonar and drone to observe the high level of the cave,” said Nakthewan. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection over the weekend seized more than 440 pounds of drugs worth more than .5 million.From noon Friday to 12 a.m. Sunday, officers intercepted 277 pounds of methamphetamine, 21 pounds of fentanyl, 13 pounds of heroin and 128 pounds of cocaine.The drugs were found hidden inside a gas tank, spare tire, dashboard, doors and quarter panels.RELATED: CBP stops attempt to smuggle 15 people off coast of San Diego“CBP’s detection and apprehension of contraband plays a significant role in keeping our communities safe and we remain committed to securing our nation’s borders,” said Pete Flores, director of field operations for CBP in San Diego.The drug seizure is one of many in recent months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Union workers rallied Wednesday across California after notices went out to hundreds of University of California workers who will be temporarily laid off.About 200 University of California, San Diego Housing, Dining and Hospitality employees will be temporarily laid off during the summer months."Like many other organizations, UC San Diego is facing financial losses as a result of the pandemic. In particular, Housing, Dining and Hospitality saw an 85% reduction in undergraduate housing for the 2020 spring quarter, and a 90% cancellation in summer season occupancy. HDH implemented numerous cost saving measures, including hiring freezes and project deferments, but due to a substantial decrease in summer duties, HDH made the difficult decision to place some of their staff members on temporary layoff for the summer months. We understand the pain and uncertainty this will cause during an already trying time. However, we must acknowledge and respond to the challenges our campus is facing, operationally and financially, as a result of the pandemic," a representative from UCSD said.While these employees mainly work with students, serving food, UCSD Health employees are concerned this is the tip of the iceberg and more layoffs are coming."I don't want to lose my benefits, I work too hard and I deserve it," Teri Taylor said. She was hired at 20-years-old and is now a Nursing Assistant."For me to be able to branch out on my own and make something of myself is amazing." Taylor said she grew up in a low income neighborhood and faced adversity.She's a member of local labor union AFSCME 3299.The union started the day with a cacophony of honking in the UCSD chancellor's neighborhood.Then, at noon they held rallies at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest and Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla."We come here day in and day out and do the work basically and to know that we can be let go at any time, it's scary, it's sad. We're in the middle of a pandemic," Taylor said."You don't have to lay people off, there's work here, there's work at other campuses. This is a UC system throughout the state," she added.The University said, "DH has a tremendous appreciation for the dedication and contribution of their staff. Our hope is that the impacted employees—and the students they serve—can return to campus.
