NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A new piece of evidence in the case of a missing Tennessee 5-year-old indicates that Joe Clyde Daniels could still be alive.The boy disappeared in April and investigators have long presumed he is dead. But, his body has never been found. Scripps station WTVF in Nashville obtained photos of the letter that was sent anonymously to Joe Clyde's grandparents.The handwritten letter was postmarked out of Nashville. It was sent this week to the grandparents in Dickson, Tennessee. The anonymous writer claims Joe Clyde's mother, Krystal Daniels, arranged to give the little boy away."I believe Krystal got Joe's clothes, packed them into a bag... and left Joe on the side of the road," the letter says.The writer claims that he is alive and living in west Tennessee, possibly in Jackson. "If we could get Krystal to confess what really happened...with this case. I know it's a bizarre case," the letter reads. The letter goes on to name those involved. WTVF has chosen not to reveal the names because the individuals have not been named by police as part of the investigation. Jake Lockert, the attorney for Joseph Daniels — Joe Clyde's father who is charged in his death — confirmed the grandparents have turned the letter over to authorities. Investigators have yet to comment on the new evidence.  Police say Krystal Daniels had motive against Joe Clyde. Investigators tell NewsChannel 5 she was frustrated with raising a child with autism and was angry the family was forced to give away their dogs because of him.  The letter doesn't mention the child's father. Earlier this year, investigators said Joseph Daniels confessed to killing his son. However, his attorney argues the confession was coerced. To this day, investigators said Joseph Daniels has not been able to tell them what happened to his son's remains.   1940

MORGANTOWN, W.V. – Murder hornets have had their time in the spotlight. Now, scientists say they've discovered “zombie cicadas.”It's a playful name from researchers at West Virginia University, who say they've found that a parasitic fungus, called Massospora, can play mind games on cicadas, causing them to infect others.Researcher showed that the psychedelic fungus can manipulate male cicadas into flicking their wings like females – a mating call – which tempts unsuspecting male cicadas and infects them.The fungus contains chemicals like those found in hallucinogenic mushrooms, according to research published in the journal PLOS Pathogens.“Essentially, the cicadas are luring others into becoming infected because their healthy counterparts are interested in mating,” said Brian Lovett, study co-author and post-doctoral researcher with the Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design. “The bioactive compounds may manipulate the insect to stay awake and continue to transmit the pathogen for longer.”The authors of the study compared the effects of the fungus to a “B-horror movie.” Massospora spores gnaw away at a cicada’s genitals, butt and abdomen, replacing them with fungal spores. Then, Lovett says they “wear away like an eraser on a pencil.”Lovett also compared the transmission of the behavior-modifying virus to rabies. He says both rabies and entomopathogenic fungi enlist their living hosts for successful “active host transmission.”“When you're infected with rabies, you become aggressive, you become afraid of water and you don't swallow,” Lovett said. “The virus is passed through saliva and all of those symptoms essentially turn you into a rabies-spreading machine where you're more likely to bite people."In that sense, Lovett says many of us are familiar with active host transmission.“Since we are also animals like insects, we like to think we have complete control over our decisions and we take our freewill for granted,” he said. “But when these pathogens infect cicadas, it's very clear that the pathogen is pulling the behavioral levers of the cicada to cause it to do things which are not in the interest of the cicada but is very much in the interest of the pathogen.”Researchers say cicada nymphs could encounter Massospora in their 17th year as they emerge from the ground to molt into adults or on their way down to feed on roots for 17 years.“The fungus could more or less lay in wait inside its host for the next 17 years until something awakens it, perhaps a hormone cue, where it possibly lays dormant and asymptomatic in its cicada host,” said co-author Matthew Kasson.As grotesque as an infected decaying cicada sounds, researchers say they’re generally harmless to humans. They also reproduce at such a rate that the fungi’s extermination of hordes of cicadas has little effect on their overall population.“They're very docile,” Lovett said. “You can walk right up to one, pick it up to see if it has the fungus (a white to yellowish plug on its back end) and set it back down. They’re not a major pest in any way. They’re just a really interesting quirky insect that’s developed a bizarre lifestyle." 3172

Model and actress Kim Porter, who shares three children with musician and entrepreneur Sean "Diddy" Combs, died Thursday, a representative of Combs told CNN.Porter was 47."Sadly, I can confirm the passing of Kim Porter. NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) - People who live next to the 8th hole at the National City Golf Course are fed up with damage from errant tee shots."It's a huge problem," says Karen Hovik. She says golf balls have broken three windshields on her car and left countless dents and scratches."I watch people, and they try to swing like Happy Gilmore while they're filming it," she says, noting that golfers take aggressive swings and don't seem to care where their ball lands.A chain link fence lines the property between the golf course and the condo complex. Hovik and her neighbors want the city or the course management company to put up tall nets, similar to the ones near the driving range."It's not just property damage," says Hovik. "Somebody could get really hurt and injured by that." Hovik says she's been hit by golf balls several times while walking near her home.A representative from the golf course told 10News they take the issue very seriously, and they've posted signs along the course telling the golfers they are responsible for any damage done by bad shots. They also say they plan a full safety review of the course this year, and that's one issue that will be addressed.Representatives from the National City Parks and Recreation Department have not returned our calls for comment. 1308

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Joseph Webster was in his 20s when he was convicted for a first-degree murder he didn't commit. At 41 years old, the father of four is readjusting to his newly granted freedom.Webster was released on Tuesday after a Davidson County judge ruled to vacate his murder conviction. New DNA evidence and key witnesses with different accounts of the incident helped solidify the decision.It's the first time a person was exonerated of murder because of his innocence in Nashville, according to attorney Daniel Horwitz."It's unbelievable but believable," Webster said. "The truth will set you free. I just didn't know when."Webster was sentenced to life in prison 15 years ago for the beating death of Leroy Owens in 1998. Horwitz helped uncover new evidence alongside the Davidson County Criminal Review Unit that points to a different suspect.Webster always maintained his innocence and never wavered from his hope that one day he'd get out of prison."It's a rare entity within the district attorney's office. Wrongful convictions are fairly rare, but they do occur," Horwitz said.In early 2019, Davidson County District Attorney Glenn Funk said he would reopen the case after new testing revealed that Webster's DNA was not found on the murder weapon. The only witness in the case allegedly changed her story several times, and at times the testimony pointed to a different suspect.In late October, Webster's attorney announced that Funk had vacated his sentence after a reinvestigation by the Conviction Review board, which cleared the way for Webster's possible release."The Conviction Review Unit no longer has confidence in the conviction of Mr. Webster," the motion stated. "We recommend Mr. Webster's conviction be vacated and the charges against him dismissed."With the victim's family in the courtroom, the state said there was no other option but to free Webster.Seconds after he could walk free, Webster's mother and children swarmed him with hugs and tears. He said he's been laying low and hanging out with loved ones who helped keep his strength over the years.Webster said there are others in his position without a support system. He eventually wants to his use experience to speak to teenagers about life in prison and to stay out of trouble.In the meantime, he wants to reconnect with society and heal from years of emotional, mental and physical stress."I just want to see the other side, and I just want to be happy and enjoy life," he said.He spent part of his day Thursday trying to get a driver's license with his attorney. Webster wants to rent his own apartment, get a commercial driver's license, and start a trucking business with his children.Horwitz said there are currently no plans to pursue restitution, but he has started a GoFundMe to help raise money for Webster.Money raised above the goal will be donated to the Innocence Project.
