Gavin Newsom on Friday signed a law that will make the state the first to allow employers, co-workers and teachers to seek gun violence restraining orders against other people.The bill was vetoed twice by former governor Jerry Brown, a Democrat, and goes beyond a measure that he signed allowing only law enforcement officers and immediate family members to ask judges to temporarily take away peoples' guns when they are deemed a danger to themselves or others.They were among 15 gun-related laws Newsom approved as the state strengthens what the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence calls the nation's toughest restrictions."California has outperformed the rest of the nation, because of our gun safety laws, in reducing the gun murder rate substantially compared to the national reduction," Newsom said as he signed the measures surrounded by state lawmakers. "No state does it as well or comprehensively as the state of California, and we still have a long way to go."Newsom also signed into law AB 893, which prohibits gun and ammunition sales at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Retiring Michigan Congressman Paul Mitchell says he is leaving the Republican Party over efforts to overturn the 2020 Presidential Election.Mitchell revealed he would become an Independent in an interview with CNN. Roughly 200 people are being asked to quarantine for 14 days after going to a gym in West Virginia.A member of Planet Fitness tested positive for COVID-19 after going to the gym on June 24, and the Monongalia County Health Department is urging anyone who was at the gym that day to watch for symptoms.The health department estimates about 205 people were at the Planet Fitness during the window of time they are concerned about.“Out of an abundance of caution, the club is temporarily closed for deep cleaning and we are not aware of any additional members or team members reporting symptoms at this time,” Planet Fitness said in a statement.West Virginia, as well as dozens of other states, has seen an increase in COVID-19 cases in the last few weeks. (AP) -- A California prosecutor says someone has filed an unemployment claim in the name of convicted murderer Scott Peterson.Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert said it is one of at least 35,000 unemployment claims made on behalf of prison inmates between March and August.Schubert said the state has paid out at least 0 million in benefits.At least 158 claims have been filed for 133 inmates on death row.Schubert called it perhaps the biggest fraud of taxpayer dollars in California history.Prosecutors say the scam involves people outside of prison filing claims on behalf of the inmates. 642
