A Kentucky high school teacher on Tuesday ousted an incumbent state lawmaker who had a role in passing a controversial pension bill this year that sparked outrage from teachers across the state.Republican voters chose Travis Brenda, a high school math teacher, over House Majority Floor Leader Jonathan Shell, who was first elected in 2012.Brenda bested Shell by a narrow margin of 123 votes In Tuesday's Republican primary for House District 71st, according to unofficial results posted to the Kentucky State Board of Elections.This past spring, Kentucky teachers held rallies at the state Capitol for more funding and to oppose a controversial pension bill, Senate Bill 151, which, among other initiatives, prevents changes to annual cost-of-living adjustments and limits the number of sick days teachers can put toward their retirement.Shell had helped turn SB 151, which had been about sewage services, into a pension overhaul and voted in support of the bill. The bill was quickly passed in the House and the Senate without allowing the public to read it, and then sent to GOP Gov. Matt Bevin to sign the bill on April 11.During the campaign, Brenda used his experience as a teacher to make the point that he's not a politician and he understands the importance of funding education. On Twitter, Brenda was critical of the pension bill and posted pictures from the April 2 teacher protest at the state Capitol.Shell confirmed to CNN he called Brenda Tuesday night to congratulate him. A doctor is opening up about working at one of the first hospitals in the country dedicated solely to treating people with severe cases of COVID-19.“Hope gave way to frustration as heartwarming images of mutual sacrifice were replaced by images of protest about the sanctity of dining out and getting haircuts,” said Dr. Ben Trappey at Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. “Now, even frustration has given way to bone deep sense of weariness and resignation. I’m running on fumes.”Trappey spent nearly three months away from his wife, quarantining at a hotel while caring for patients at Bethesda Hospital near Minneapolis.He destresses through reflective writing and teaches it to other residents and physicians.His essay “Running on Fumes” was recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). It reflects how he feels still being on the front lines of COVID-19, but not feeling like the rest of the world is behind him.“The thing that made me feel most supported early on was just that everybody was making these sacrifices together and now when there are so many people who refuse to acknowledge that a sacrifice even needs to be made is really frustrating,” said Trappey.He says one of his challenges is not knowing which COVID-19 patients will get better.Many hospitals have provided support like counseling and buddy systems.Trappey is now on parental leave at home with his wife and newborn son.“It’s hard to think about what things will be like as we get further into the fall and we have other respiratory viruses in place as well. It’s pretty worrisome, so I’m just trying not to let myself think too much about that,” said Trappey.The doctor says he hopes people realize they're not alone in the pandemic. 1758

A bomb threat has caused the evacuation of parts of Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif. on Tuesday, prompting a large police response. According to KGO-TV, a tip was received by Crime Stoppers in New York, and relayed to authorities in California. The phone call was anonymous and no other details were shared. Many of Facebook's 33,606 employees work out of the company's Menlo Park headquarters. 415

A high-speed police pursuit has ended in a Phoenix neighborhood as police continue to search the area for at least one suspect.Police say they were following a possible stolen vehicle and attempted to pull the driver over Tuesday when the suspect refused to stop.Helicopter video showed the white SUV in the Biltmore area around noon, going the wrong way in traffic and driving on light rail tracks near Central Avenue and Thomas Road to avoid stoplights. Video from helicopter showed what appeared to be stop sticks deployed on the vehicle that caused a tire to blow near a neighborhood in west Phoenix. The vehicle was then seen driving through multiple front yards and sidewalks around 12:30 p.m. The occupants of the car bailed in front of a home on foot. Police say one woman, the passenger in the vehicle, was taken into custody. The male driver is still missing and believed to be hiding in the neighborhood.Police say the male suspect is believed to be responsible for at least three carjackings. During one of the carjackings Tuesday, a Phoenix police officer tried to intervene and fired shots toward the suspect. A grief-stricken Pittsburgh community will have another day of funerals for victims of a synagogue shooting -- even as it struggles to comfort those affected by the massacre.In yet?another day?of anguish for the close-knit community, mourners will gather Wednesday to bury some of the 11 people killed when a gunman stormed the Tree of Life Synagogue on Saturday.Crowds packed funerals Tuesday, with long lines snaking through streets and busloads of people coming from synagogues nationwide.
