SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego organization is set to hold a job fair in City Heights Thursday, giving young adults an opportunity to find employment. The “CONNECT2Careers Spring Job Fair" will be held on March 29 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Fair @ 44 International Market on 4350 El Cajon Boulevard.The job fair is open to anyone ages 16 to 24. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After all these years, people still love coming to the San Diego Zoo to see the California condors.At one point in the 1980's, there were only 22 of them living outside captivity. The zoo began a major effort to save the species, getting them to reproduce and then releasing them across the state. It's worked. There are now more than 250 flying across the American West and Mexico.RELATED: How the wild parrots of San Diego arrived in America's Finest City"It's really good for us, actually, because they help to reduce all the bad things that cause our sicknesses and ill health. So it's pretty cool," says Maggie Stack, a San Diego State graduate student. Stack is part of a new SDSU team working with the San Diego Zoo to save the bird.As much success as the zoo has had with the condor program, new research shows that the condors in the wild are still under threat."The condors are still critically endangered, so there's still a long way for them to go until we can have a really self-sustaining population," Stack said.RELATED: New giraffe calf joins in the herd at San Diego Zoo exhibitA big reason for that is that the same pollutants that nearly killed the condor off so many years ago are still hurting them today. Stack's team is doing research suggesting that the condors are still dealing with lead poisoning and the chemical DDT, which was banned nearly 40 years ago."Those can cause egg shell thinning in condors," Stack added. "So we're seeing a significant amount of egg shell thinning in condors that live on the coast."A thinner shell means a greater chance of the egg being crushed, often accidentally by the parent condors trying to keep the egg safe.The researchers hope their work at SDSU can help solve the problem. 1768

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego veteran is suing 3M Company alleging earplugs he wore while in the military were defective. He’s the latest in a series of lawsuits that have been filed against the company by service members across the country.Kevin Alicie filed a lawsuit on Wednesday claiming he “used Defendant’s dangerously defective Dual-ended Combat Arms? earplugs during tank firing, training firing, other live fire training, vehicle maintenance, and during other training and combat exercises.” According to the lawsuit Alicie wore the earplugs while at Camp Pendleton and was first diagnosed with hearing loss in California. Alicie tells 10News during his military carrier he started having problems with his hearing. He’d hear ringing. He says he didn’t think much about it until the ringing started to become more frequent.“I mentioned it to the doctor when I was doing my final physical, and sure enough when they did that last hearing test they found that there was hearing loss,” Alicie said.The lawsuit says 3M did not inform the military or Alicie that the earplugs were defective and failed to adequately warn that the earplugs did not meet the military’s sound requirements."The biggest defect is they don't do what they are advertised to do,” said Alicie’s attorney John Gomez. “Essentially they are supposed to protect your ears and your hearing in proximity to loud sounds that can cause hearing loss or damage.”Attorney John Gomez says the earplugs were standard issue in certain branches of the military between 2003 and 2015.“Without question, I think tons of users-consumers and potential victims reside right here in San Diego County,” Gomez said.According to a July 2018 press release from the United States Department of Justice, 3M agreed to pay .1 million to resolve allegations that it supplied the United States with defective dual-ended combat arms earplugs.The release says, “the United States alleged that 3M, and its predecessor, Aearo Technologies, Inc., knew the CAEv2 was too short for proper insertion into users’ ears and that the earplugs could loosen imperceptibly and therefore did not perform well for certain individuals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego-based financial investment advisor is being accused of running a Ponzi scheme targeting mostly elderly victims who planning for retirement, and taking more than million, according to bankruptcy court records.Sharon and David Vega said they started working with Christopher Dougherty about 17 years ago. A few years ago, Sharon Vega said that he recommended to take money “out of the TD Ameritrade and place it in private placement in farm subsidy accounts.”The Vegas trusted him and placed approximately ,000 in these new accounts. They said they continued to receive statements showing how their money was doing, but they started to see red flags. Sharon Vega said when checks bounced, Dougherty gave various excuses.She showed Team 10 one bounced check where Dougherty claimed “there was a mix-up at the bank.” They decided to sever ties and asked for their money back.“He said no problem, he would start on it right away,” Sharon Vega said. However, she said that did not happen. She showed Team 10 several text messages from Dougherty late August into early September promising their money. One message said the transfer was “already in motion. Should see it shortly.”“We have not received any funds back. He filed bankruptcy and he’s trying to have ours discharged with many other people’s,” Vega said. She said the ,000 was money they had been saving to try and help their grandchildren with college.In bankruptcy court documents, the United States Trustee wrote Dougherty’s “deception is the basis of a Ponzi scheme.”“[Their] practice of using new investment money to pay existing investors dividends and principal gave the false impression that the payments received by investors came from earnings and profits or from a return of their principal,” the documents said. “It’s devastating,” said Jerry, another former client of Dougherty. He and his wife declined to use their last name.Jerry and his wife Diane told Team 10 they invested more than million with Dougherty over the years. At first, it was with traditional accounts. They said he later convinced them to invest in an Alpine farm. They thought they were diversifying their retirement money, but what they know now is everything they saved for is gone and what happened to their funds is unclear. Like Sharon and David Vega, they said Dougherty kept sending them statements.“We rely upon our children now,” Jerry said. “We can’t even afford a burial plot.”In 2011, Dougherty was charged for stealing money from a youth baseball league. He was ultimately sentenced to three years summary probation, according to the District Attorney’s Office. Team 10 attempted to contact Dougherty and his wife, Nereida, who is also named in the bankruptcy documents. They did not respond. An attorney for the Doughertys also did not respond to Team 10’s inquiries. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A suspected DUI driver overturned his car while speeding in the East Village, sending a passenger flying from the vehicle and facing life-threatening injuries.A 23-year-old man was driving a 2004 Toyota Prius "at a high rate of speed" eastbound on Market St. just before midnight Friday, according to San Diego Police. As he turned left to continue northbound on 7th Ave., he struck the curb and his Toyota overturned.A 24-year-old man sitting in the passenger's seat was ejected from the vehicle and suffered life-threatening injuries, including a crushed pelvis and internal bleeding. They were in critical condition Saturday morning, according to police.The driver suffered a laceration to his forehead, police said.Police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. 795
