Taipei, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Signing the cross-Strait economic and trade pact, ECFA, will benefit Taiwan, Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou said here Sunday in a television debate.Ma debated with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen during a two-hour televised debate over the economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA), a free trade agreement the Taiwan authority intends to sign with the Chinese mainland.Taiwan urgently needs a trade pact with China to usher in a golden decade of economic boom, Ma said, accusing DPP of exaggerating the adverse effects of ECFA and manipulating public fear.Lee Tung-Hao, a professor with the National Chengchi University, said there are different voices over ECFA because of public misunderstanding of the pact, but the debate will help build consensus.The ECFA, a priority in cross-Strait relations, is aimed at institutionalizing economic cooperation between the mainland and Taiwan and facilitating and regularizing economic and trade exchanges.

We already know that 60 percent of the world population live in cities, the figure rises almost all the time. BEIJING, May 4 (Xinhua) -- China had raised 4.349 billion yuan (637 million U.S. dollars) of donations in money and materials for quake-hit Yushu as of Tuesday, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.The donations included 3.66 billion yuan and quake-relief materials worth 686 million yuan as of 4:00 p.m., said a statement released by the ministry.The post said 635 million yuan, including 79 million yuan and materials worth 556 million yuan, had been channeled to the quake zone.It said 69,353 cotton-padded tents, 143,854 cotton-padded coats, together with other quake-relief materials, had been delivered to Yushu.At least 2,200 people died and more than 100,000 were left homeless when the 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit the Yushu prefecture, Qinghai Province on April 14.

BEIJING, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday called for more efforts to cut emissions and conserve energy to meet the country's target set by the 11th Five-Year Plan.According to the plan laid out in 2006, China will cut its per unit GDP energy consumption by 20 percent compared with 2005 levels by the end of 2010.The task of fulfilling the goal was still tough , Wen said at a State Council meeting, adding that this year would be particularly difficult as the first quarter had already seen rising energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) in the major industrial sectors.In the first three months, six major industries, including steel, power and non-ferrous, saw a 3.2 percent growth in energy consumption per unit of GDP, Wen said.  Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (C) addresses a State Council meeting of conserving energy and cutting emissions in Beijing, China, on May 5, 2010.
