SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A trip to a dog park in Ocean Beach ended in a hospital visit for one San Diego couple.“I want her to go to jail, she assaulted my husband, and I’m angry about it,” said Ash O’Brien.O'Brien said she and her husband were at Dusty Rhodes Dog Park in Ocean Beach Thursday afternoon with their three-month-old puppy. They sat at a picnic table and began enjoying a meal when a woman reportedly confronted them for not wearing facial coverings and eating at the park where there is a no food policy.The confrontation ended with O’Brien’s husband being pepper-sprayed by the woman.“If we knew there was a no food policy, we wouldn’t have brought it into the park,” said O’Brien. “The lady who maced him automatically started saying stuff about us not wearing a mask when we were social distancing; there was no one near us.”O’Brien said that after exchanging words, the woman walked away from the picnic table but returned after a few minutes and did the unexpected.“She just came up without saying anything and just stuck the mace can right in front of my face,” said O’Brien.“My husband, being a good guy, walked in front of her and was like ‘hey calm down please don’t do this’ and then she grabbed him and just starting macing him, she used the entire can on him.”“We drove to the hospital, he got treated and everything,” said O’Brien.O’Brien said the pepper spray got on her arms and started to burn, while her husband was sprayed in the face.A witness captured part of the incident on camera and told ABC 10News she was shocked at what she was seeing. She recorded the woman’s license plate number.The couple filed a police report with the San Diego Police Department. The department confirmed they took a misdemeanor battery report but could not immediately provide further details.O’Brien was thankful none of the dogs at the park were injured by the pepper spray and wants the woman to be held accountable for the incident.“People don’t need to be getting assaulted for not wearing a mask in a public outdoor area,” she said. 2055

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two weeks ago, the county warned San Diegans to continue practicing social distancing, washing of hands, and wearing facial coverings over the Labor Day weekend to thwart the spread of COVID-19.County public health officials had been clear that they did not want to see the same case spikes that followed July 4th and Memorial Day.Now that Labor Day has passed, local doctors say they have yet to see the same spike in coronavirus cases seen after holidays earlier this summer."We have not seen a sustained rate of 30, 40, 60 positives like we did around July 4. We're not seeing it yet," said Dr. David Pride, an infectious disease specialist at UC San Diego.Pride says the difference may be due to residents being more educated about the virus and how to best slow the spread. For the other two holidays, schools were also still closed.According to the county, 10 days after July 4 the region's positivity rate was 6.3%. Currently, the county's positivity rate is 4.4%."We're 10 days out, no big jump so far, our positivity rates suggest that something is different this time and hopefully that will continue for a week or two," Pride said.While San Diego County's positivity rate is low, it's the region's case rate (cases per 100,000 residents) that continues to be an issue. And now, it's the county's case rate that threatens to push the region's into a stricter reopening tier."This time around they're not sitting home, they're not socially distancing, so we're gonna see spikes that are largely unrelated to the Labor Day weekend," says Pride.And with more fall holidays approaching, Pride says residents will need to continue their vigilance through the holidays as spikes in cases are more likely. 1735

San Diego (KGTV)- A local middle and high school team sweep a popular robotics competition beating out groups from all over the world.They call themselves “Team Inspiration.” The group of students has been working with robotics for nearly ten years.The team is comprised of six different schools in San Diego, including: Del Norte High, Scripps Ranch High, Rancho Bernardo High, Westview High, The Cambridge School, and Black Mountain Middle School.Last month the team competed in the 2020 International RoboSub Competition. Each team had to build an underwater robot.“The basic tasks include going underwater, seeing and recognizing images underwater, and going to wave points underwater,” says team member Colin Szeto.This Is the second year the group participated in the competition. Due to COVID-19, the competition was done virtually this time around.“It was a pretty good equalizer because we all got the same zoom playing field,” says Aditya Mavalankar.The student updated their robot design from last year and built an additional robot for the competition.“The idea was that both of them would go in the water together to distribute the tasks so that we could have more of an advantage,” says Ashiria Goel.The students also built the sensor navigation parts on the devices. It can “basically tell how far it is from other objects,” says Mavalankar. “We have cameras on multiple sides of the robots. We have hydrophones that’’s able to create an acoustic pinger in the pool.”Team Inspiration took home first place in the overall competition, technical design, and website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two young teenagers have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the deadly shooting of a College Area man. According to San Diego Police, the two juveniles, ages 14 and 15 were taken into custody and placed into Juvenile Hall. “The names of the juveniles will not be released due to their age,” police said. 39-year-old Ishi Hampton was shot and killed on May 2 outside the “Iconic at Alvarado” apartments in the College Area. At some point, investigators say they shot him and ran toward Alvarado Hospital.
