With that, there are many concerns about mail-in ballots, and whether or not they favor one political party over another.Bakersfield College political science professor Allen Bolar says the rumor has always been that mail-in voting favors Democrats. He says that rumor hasn't historically been true, until now."The Republican party is gonna be sending mail-in voter ballot applications to its voters, but on the other hand, the top of its ticket is saying that you can't trust the mail-in voting," Bolar said.This year, votes received by mail will likely be more skewed favoring democrats, Bolar said. The professor explaining that mostly has to do with the rhetoric coming from the White House for months, denouncing the mail-in vote system's integrity."You have tremendous potential for fraud and abuse," President Donald Trump said about mail-voting this summer.Bolar says some Republicans, heading President Trump's words, may avoid casting their vote via mail. Meanwhile, Democrats are expected to be turning out in higher numbers. Democrats have cast about 51% of the early votes, according to a predictive analysis by the data firm TargetSmart, which uses voter data to project turnout trends. That's compared with 38% by Republicans. Bolar says republicans will mostly vote in other ways, like at the poll on election day."Many Republican voters are die-hard Republican voters. They're going to show, and do whatever they need to do," he said.Bolar says the one advantage that may come out of this for Democrats, is that when a party's base votes early, it allows the party to focus their campaign calls and mailers on a smaller set of people who haven't voted."Whereas the Republican party is going to have to keep worrying about its whole set of voters, or at least a large number of them, and its efforts are going to be a little harder to concentrate," he said. Doctors are seeing more children with an illness that can look a lot like the flu or cold. It's known as RSV. It stands for respiratory syncytial virus. It comes with the typical runny nose, cough and congestion we see in the wintertime. Adults can usually get over RSV without a problem. But it can be a lot more severe for young children.“From a newborn to a 3- or 4-year-aged child, and they go to a daycare or they're exposed to other kids who have a runny nose, cough or congestion. These kids can fall sicker much more, and will have more respiratory distress and dehydration than kids who are older,” says Dr. Purva Grover with Cleveland Clinic. Respiratory distress and dehydration are what makes RSV different from the typical cold. Doctors say some of the signs include shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. Parents may be able to tell this is happening in a child if they're heavily breathing from both their nose and chest, as well as grunting noises. It's important that families see a doctor before this becomes respiratory failure. There isn't a vaccine specifically for RSV. But some doctors say they've been able to treat it with other vaccines. “There is a vaccine which is actually an antibody treatment that we give to the most vulnerable premature infants, those that are in their first year of life and were born very prematurely,” says Dr. James Gaensbauer, a pediatrics and infectious disease specialist at Denver Health. “But it's not an ideal thing, you have to give a shot every month for every five months that is typically the season.” Doctors can also do other things to treat the symptoms, like giving kids extra oxygen.RSV usually lasts about two weeks. 1707
TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay area is known for its crystal clear beaches and white sand.Many people see the saltwater as a place to relax and kick back, but Dr. Serene Al-Momen sees it as a vast area of opportunity to stop the spread of the coronavirus.Specifically with what lies under the surface."The jellyfish is the component of the sensor that basically makes the cell emit light when a pathogen from the air is connected to it or binds to it," Dr. Al-Momen said.Dr. Al-Momen is the CEO of the company Senseware. She said the jellyfish is helping her team identify the coronavirus in the air.Her team works to find what's in the air behind the scenes. They do it with a sensor box not much bigger than an Amazon Echo at home.The sensor can detect pathogens in the air like Ecoli, SARS and anthrax.In March, they shifted gears in what type of pathogen they wanted to find."We took what we had and we kind of improved on it to really meet the challenges of today with COVID," Dr. Al-Momen said.The sensor can count particles down to the smallest micron that the common eye would never catch.To detect the coronavirus, they made adjustments."For COVID, we have the SARS code 2 antibody in that cell. So, what happens is when we get the sample of the air and the sensor gets the sample of the air there is a pathogen that binds into the cell and connects to it it will emit light," Dr. Al-Momen said.To help identify pathogens scientists use a luminescent component from a jellyfish; something that is nothing new when working to identify viruses and diseases."This particular methodology was created in the early 2000s by the MIT Lincoln Labs to specifically identify anthrax threats when anthrax was an issue," Dr. Al-Momen said.The jellyfish's protein helps light up a cell when a pathogen from the air is connected to or binds to it.The team then uses sophisticated algorithms that measure the intensity of the light that can determine whether it's positive or negative.The sensors cost tens of thousands of dollars and are geared towards larger corporations such as hospitals and senior care facilities.Senseware is currently in the Beta testing phase and they hope to offer the machine commercially by November.For more information about Senseware, visit their website. A police body-camera recording released Wednesday shed more light on the house party that earned six Miami University students citations for violating COVID-19 health orders over Labor Day weekend.There were 20 people inside the house on Saturday afternoon, when an Oxford police officer arrived to break up the party. In the recording, he approaches a group of young men sitting outside and asks to speak to someone who lives in the house.One steps forward and admits he knows he’s broken the state’s rule against gatherings larger than 10 people.The officer takes his ID, runs it through a police database and discovers that its owner had tested positive for COVID-19.This exchange follows:Officer: I’ve never seen this before. There’s an input on the computer that you tested positive for COVID.Student: Yes.Officer: When was this?Student: This was a week ago.Officer: Are you supposed to be quarantining?Student: Yeah. That’s why I’m at my house.Officer: So you have other people here, and you’re positive for COVID?Student: I mean…Officer: You see the problem? How many other people have COVID?Student: They all do.Officer: Everybody has it?Student: Well, and them — [gestures to house across the street]Officer: And everybody over here has it?Student: Well, I think two.Officer: That’s what we’re trying to prevent, man.Student: I know.Officer: We’re trying to keep this town open.Student: I know.
