SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In an effort to lower costs in one the country's most expensive states for medications, Gov. Gavin Newsom wants California to manufacture its own generic drugs.Newsom is expected to send a proposal as part of the new state budget to the legislature Friday that would allow the state to negotiate contracts with drugmakers to manufacture selected prescriptions on behalf of California.“The cost of health care is just too damn high, and California is fighting back,” Newsom said in a statement. “These nation-leading reforms seek to put consumers back in the driver seat and lower health care costs for every Californian.”Three of the most expensive U.S. cities for medications are San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego. According to a survey by Kaiser Family Foundation, six in 10 Americans take prescription drugs, and 79 percent of those surveyed say the costs are unreasonable. Prescription drug prices have gone up 38 percent since 2017. Newsom's plan would make those medications available at an affordable price for 40 million people living in California. Details on what the drug program will look like will be available when Newsom submits his full proposal Friday afternoon. If approved, California will become the first state in the U.S. to have its own generic drug label. 1315

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - With one of the largest holidays of the year just a day away, getting around and conducting business before and on the holiday can be tricky to navigate with what is closed and open. The North County Transit District will have a normal service schedule for Christmas Eve. However, the Amtrak R2R partnership with NCTD -- which allows Coaster customers to travel on Amtrak trains in the San Diego area -- will be blacked out through Monday. During this time, all Amtrak Pacific Surfliner customers will be required to show a valid Amtrak fare and no COASTER passes will be accepted.NCTD schedules will be reduced to a Sunday service schedule on Christmas. The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System will run a similar schedule, with normal weekday hours Christmas Eve on all Trolley lines and MTS local, urban, Express, Rapid and Rapid Express bus routes.Christmas is more complicated. All Trolley lines except the Silver Line will operate on a half-hour frequency on Christmas Day. Rapid, urban, and local bus routes will operate on a Sunday schedule. No service will be provided on Rapid Express routes 280 or 290, Rapid routes 204, 237 and Express routes 50, 60, 110, 150, Sorrento Valley Coaster Connection and most express bus routes. MTS Access subscriptions are cancelled. Subscription passengers who still want service must call ahead of time to arrange their transportation. Finally, several rural routes have been rescheduled. There will be no service on rural route 892 on Friday. Rural route 888 will operate Thursday instead of Friday, while rural route 891 will be pushed back to Monday instead of its normal Friday schedule.MTS Information and Trip Planning, the Transit Store, Compass Service Center and customer service offices will close at 5 p.m on Thursday and be closed Dec. 25. However, as of Dec. 20, nearly all drive-up COVID-19 testing sites have become appointment-only locations. This change is in response to safety concerns caused by traffic backups. While appointments are highly recommended, and those with them are given preference, people without appointments will be tested as capacity permits."With vaccine distribution in its very earliest stage, COVID-19 testing remains extremely important to protect the public's health," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, San Diego County's public health officer. "People experiencing any symptoms, or who feel they have been exposed, are encouraged to get promptly tested. Those with symptoms should isolate until getting results, while others should adhere to the best practices of wearing a mask, social distance, and good hygiene."The San Diego Food Bank will be closed for the upcoming holidays on Dec. 24-25 and Dec. 31-Jan. 1.For details on testing locations or in need of food assistance, visit 211sandiego.org or call 2-1-1.All San Diego administrative offices will be closed on Christmas holiday.Curbside trash, recyclables and yard waste will not be collected on Friday for customers served by the Environmental Services Department. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former employee of the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System is suing the agency for retaliation after he said he stood up for a co-worker.Ivan Augustino moved to the United States from Sudan and still volunteers with projects for his native country. He started working for MTS in 2015.“It was pretty good,” Augustino said.Augustino worked as a Senior Applications Developer.“I am the main guy that deals with the complicated back end computer codes,” Augustino said.In 2017, he said he made a move that changed everything. It started with a co-worker.“One morning, she walked into my office pretty much in tears,” Augustino said.He said that a co-worker confided to him the Chief Information Officer discriminated against her when she asked about a promotion. The lawsuit filed against MTS claims the CIO told Augustino’s co-worker she was “not qualified for the job because of her age, her marriage and family planning status, and her relationship to an active duty military service member.”“The other question she also asked was, how old are you? You seem like you are at an age where you would be having kids,” Augustino said. It was a shocking conversation.“You know, that is wrong,” Augustino said. After his co-worker told him what happened, he first asked advice from another co-worker who then took it to human resources. Augustino said his co-worker did not want to bring the complaint to HR.“The last thing that anyone within the IT department wants is to take an issue to HR because once you report it to HR, there is going to be retaliation,” Augustino said. And that’s what happened, according to the former MTS employee. Initially, he was concerned how MTS investigated the complaint.“I was expecting someone to at least come and talk to me, but no one spoke to me,” Augustino said.He said retaliation began by the CIO and his direct supervisor.“The way they treated me just changed,” Augustino said.He claimed management suggested they would give him recommendations if he found another job. On another occasion, Augustino said they “mocked [his] English as a second language” in an email. On top of that, he said 98 hours of paid time off promised to him for working overtime on a big project was revoked, along with a promised promotion.“Coming from where I come from, I just felt like I did not even know what to do,” Augustino said.Feeling “degraded” and “intimidated”, he submitted a letter of resignation. However, he said he gave management an option.“If you can address this issue and the executive team and bring what I view as retaliation to a stop, I will pull my resignation,” Augustino said. Instead, he said he was fired and walked out of the building by security. His termination came a little over a month after he voiced his concerns about his female co-worker.A spokesperson for MTS told Team 10: “There is absolutely no validity to any of Mr. Augustino’s claims.”When asked if he would defend his co-worker again, Augustino said “absolutely.”Attorneys Zachary Schumacher and Daniel Goularte represent Augustino."This is absolutely a David versus Goliath situation," Schumacher said.Schumacher said fear is why people don't speak up."I like to compare it to battered wives syndrome, where you essentially have this person or in this case this entity who has this major power and balance who is doing all sorts of awful things and figuratively at least, battering its employees and yet they don't leave. They feel this sense of loyalty," Schumacher said. Team 10 was not able to get in touch with his female co-worker, but the lawsuit stated that she has since been moved to a “lonely, quiet corner of the office.” 3684

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 9-year-old San Diego girl is using her cookie business to help support other local businesses. The 9-year-old, named Daniele, wrote a letter to Kenny Chen, the owner of Onyx Moto in Kearny Mesa, proposing a way to increase business.Daniele is proposing that Chen use Girl Scout Cookies to sell more motorcycles.RELATED: Girl Scout sells more than 300 boxes of cookies at San Diego marijuana dispensary“You can give customers a box (of girl scout cookies) while they sign all those papers. They may even buy the second warranty,” the three-page letter reads.“You have customers and they get hungry. Many have probably said they need to ‘go to lunch’ to talk over their decision to buy a motorcycle. Don’t let them leave! Give them a box of delicious Girl Scout Cookies instead.”Chen said in a post on Instagram that he loves seeing such creativity and that he’ll be placing an order for some of the treats. What a smart cookie! 959
