SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man convicted of sex crimes against children in Northern California who was recommended for conditional release to a Pauma Valley home will no longer be considered for placement in San Diego County, prosecutors said Friday.Joshua Cooley, 40, is classified as a Sexually Violent Predator, a designation for those convicted of sexually violent offenses and diagnosed with a mental disorder that makes them likely to re-offend.According to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, Cooley was convicted in Humboldt County of sex crimes against underage girls.The Department of State Hospitals recently recommended placing Cooley at 15077 Adams Drive after attempts to find a suitable Humboldt County location were unsuccessful, according to the DA's Office.The address is the same location where another Sexually Violent Predator, Joseph Bocklett, was recently recommended for release. San Diego County Superior Court Judge Howard Shore ultimately decided against the placement, ruling that it would bring the 76-year-old Bocklett too close to areas frequented by families.San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan lodged a strong objection to Cooley's proposed placement, citing Shore's ruling and the potential risks to the public."Ignoring and overlooking Judge Shore's thorough, thoughtful and well- reasoned conclusions and continuing to consider this location for placement of an SVP is reckless and irresponsible," Stephan wrote in a letter to Liberty Healthcare and the California Department of State Hospitals, which are tasked with locating suitable post-release housing for sexual predators.Stephan wrote that if the placement was considered inappropriate for Bocklett, a senior citizen, the much younger Cooley represented an even greater risk.According to the DA's Office, Liberty Healthcare has stated that the recommendation was made in error, and the Department of State Hospitals no longer feels the Pauma Valley address is a suitable location for Cooley. An Oct. 9 virtual court hearing was scheduled in Humboldt County Superior Court to discuss the proposed placement, but that hearing has since been vacated."This placement would have put children and families at risk, so we went to battle alongside our community, and we prevailed," Stephan said. "I want to acknowledge that the system worked in that the State Department of Hospitals gave serious consideration to our concerns and spared us from an extended legal battle in court. They showed that they care about our community. I also want to acknowledge the SAFE Task Force, led by the sheriff's department, for all their work giving notification and gathering input from the community. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was suspected of stealing a car from a Rolando Park used auto dealership early this morning, then crashing the car when he tried to flee from police.An unknown number of accomplices stole three other cars from the same dealership, and all the accomplices remained unaccounted for Sunday afternoon, San Diego Police Officer Sarah Foster said.Two of the cars were eventually recovered, while one was still outstanding.Police were alerted to a break-in around 2 a.m. at Cash For Cars on University Avenue, Foster said. Officers spotted one of the four stolen cars leaving the parking lot and tried to pull it over.The driver fled, and police pursued him until he crashed into an embankment on College Avenue near Streamview Drive, Foster said.The suspect was arrested with the help of a police dog after he tried to hide from officers in a home near the spot where he crashed, Foster said.The man was treated for a bite wound before being booked into jail.Detectives were continuing to search for the remaining suspects. 1049

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - More than 1.3 million ballots had been received by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters by mid-afternoon today, with around 51,000 votes cast at polling locations so far.The San Diego County Registrar's Office reported 1.36 million ballots collected by mid-afternoon out of the 1.95 million registered voters in the county.With county polling locations open early, about 126,000 residents were able to cast their votes in person over the past four days, the Registar's Office said.Mail-in ballots were sent to all registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even those who had not requested one. Voters who prefer to cast their ballots at their assigned polling place on Election Day can do so until 8 p.m.An in-person voting location tool can be found on the county's voting website, SDvote.com.County voters also have until 8 p.m. to drop off mail ballots at 125 drop-off locations throughout the county, which can found on the Registrar's website.Registrar of Voters Michael Vu said his office is working with county public health services to ensure the health and safety of election workers and voters. Personal protective equipment and sanitation supplies will be provided to staffers so they can conduct the election process safely.Voters casting ballots in person were instructed to bring a face mask and plan to maintain social distance.Locations of vote centers were chosen and configured to allow for queuing and voting while maintaining six feet of social distance. Masks will be required inside, but residents unable or unwilling to wear them will be allowed to vote curbside.Officials noted that the need to social distance may create longer lines than usual at in-person locations. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Tijuana man and his three adult children were indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly smuggling hundreds of illegal immigrants across the border for profit, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Friday.Luis Antonio Mendez-Brahan, 55, remains at large, but his children, Christopher Mendez, 28, and Wendy Monserrath Mendez, 24, both of Wasco in Kern County; and Nancy Jacqueline Suarez, 31, of Madera, were arrested at their homes on Thursday, prosecutors said.Mendez-Brahan is accused of leading the smuggling scheme for nearly a decade, which allegedly operated near the Tecate Port of Entry and "used an ever-changing cadre of spotters, guides and drivers" to move "hundreds of illegal aliens into the United States."Mendez-Brahan is accused of charging between ,000 and ,500 for each person smuggled into the U.S., while his children allegedly used family members in both countries to move the money. Border Patrol investigators tracked financial transactions between Mendez-Brahan's children in the U.S. to money service businesses in Tijuana, according to prosecutors.The four family members are each charged with conspiracy to bring in illegal aliens for financial gain, to transport illegal aliens and to conduct financial transactions with proceeds of specified unlawful activity. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Countywide sales of previously owned single-family homes and attached properties both fell from September to October while prices increased, according to data released Thursday by the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors.Sales of single-family homes fell 4.9% from 1,862 in September to 1,771 in October while attached-property sales fell 2% from 943 in September to 924 last month. Sold listings of both property types have fallen for four consecutive months, according to the GSDAR.Median sale prices of single-family homes rose 3.1% from 5,000 in September to 5,000 in October while attached property prices increased 2.4% from 9,000 in September to 9,000 last month.
