SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A red flag warning has been issued for a large swath of San Diego County amid windy, dry conditions. The warning lasts through 6 p.m., Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. Winds will pick up throughout the day Sunday along coastal mountain slopes and through valley corridors below passes and canyons. Strong winds are also expected over the Inland Empire below the Cajon Pass. RELATED: Check today's San Diego County forecastNortheast to east winds are forecast to reach 20 to 30 miles per hour with peak gusts around 50 miles per hour at windiest locations. Meanwhile, humidity is expected drop to 10 percent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A La Jolla store in an upscale mall is facing scrutiny from customers who told Team 10 they were misled after buying hundreds—even thousands—of dollars worth of skin care products.Team 10 spoke to at least two customers who had similar complaints. When they tried to return unopened products, they said they were sold lies.Christianna Ortiz regrets walking into Gold Elements at the UTC mall on La Jolla Village Drive.“I’m honestly very embarrassed I fell for it,” Ortiz said.Last summer, she said Gold Elements employees encouraged her to purchase products, including a skin care regiment.“He wanted me to buy it for 0. I said yeah, that's not going to work. He said I'll tell you what, I'll throw in a facial and I was like, now that sounds interesting, but I don't want to come here alone. I'll throw in two facials,” Ortiz said the employee told her.When she went to her appointment, she said employees would not give her the facials she paid for.“I said, I want to return the stuff then and he said no return.I said I paid for something that was an outright lie,” Ortiz said.Ortiz said they never told her there was a no refund policy.She disputed the charge with her credit card and could not believe what happened next.“They sent me back the copy of my receipt along with another sheet of paper that listed the refund policy. I had never seen that sheet of paper, didn't exist!” Ortiz said.“You’re hustled,” said Sharon Garrow, another Gold Elements customer.Garrow spent nearly ,500 on products in September. She admits spending more than she should. When she tried to return the products the following morning—less than 24 hours later—she said she was not allowed to.She went to the store Saturday, where she said an employee told her there was nobody who could help her. She went again on Monday. “He [said] there’s no return on [these] products,” Garrow said.It was on her receipt, but like Ortiz, she signed on a computer and said the policy was not visible on the screen. She said nobody told her anything in person and there were no signs in the store that customers could see.A Team 10 investigative photojournalist also visited the store. He also did not see any return policies in the store.On the California Attorney General’s website, it says: “Stores that do not accept returns must clearly display their policy.”The California Civil code states that retail sellers shall display their policy “either on signs posted at each cash register and sales counter, at each public entrance, on tags attached to each item sold under that policy, or on the retail seller’s order form, if any.”Goods that cannot be resold due to “health considerations” are an exception. Both women said they never opened the Gold Elements boxes before trying to return the items.When Team 10 visited the store to get answers, there were no managers available to talk to us. An independent esthetician told Team 10 to contact a Gold Elements promoter. That person did not call back.Less than an hour later, a man who claimed he was the owner called Team 10 and said they always give the best help to customers and have not had problems with refunds. The man would not agree to an in-person interview, saying that he was not in town.He told Team 10 all future communication would be with his lawyer, but would not give his lawyer’s name.It was a different story on the Better Business Bureau website, where the store has an F rating. A 2017 class action lawsuit filed in Northern California against Gold Elements products and affiliated companies.Part of the complaint was that “complimentary facials” were not honored when customers tried to use them.““If I got taken, so many other people are probably getting taken. Somebody has to stop it,” Ortiz said.Team 10 discovered the La Jolla store could also be violating different state code.On Gold Elements’ wall is a price list for facials. The Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, under the California State Department of Consumer Affairs, said a business that charges for facials should have an establishment license.The store has no record of that license.The women have a warning for others.“It’s not like I’m a dummy,” Ortiz said. “Do what I usually do. Check reviews ahead of time.”The Attorney General’s office said if any customers have concerns about a return policy, or lack of one, you can file a complaint with their office. 4419

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local college professor says her a electric scooter ride ended painfully after the scooter turned off in the middle of the ride.Jenny Mahoney, a professor of biology and kinesiology at Point Loma Nazarene University, was with three friends on scooters in December, headed to December Nights in Balboa Park. She says her friends were on Bird scooters, while she was on a Lime scooter with plenty of charge. The ride came to an end two minutes along Harbor Drive near the airport."I was in the bike lane and went from full speed to a dead stop," said Mahoney.She says the screen went blank as the scooter shut down. She remembers her body slamming into the handlebars and was then thrown off the scooter."A lot of pain. I wasn't able to breathe. Got the wind knocked out of me," said Mahoney.Mahoney says one of her friends crashed into her. He got up and carried her out of the bike lane. She suffered a broken bone in her hand, and a sprained wrist and ankle."You assume when you're on these scooters and following all the safety rules rules, you're going to get to your destination safely, but that didn't happen," said Mahoney.The question now: Has it happened before? Mahoney filed a claim with Lime before hiring attorney Evan Walker. Walker tells 10News he just got another call from a Seattle tourist whose wife remains hospitalized in San Diego from a similar incident with a Lime scooter."My understanding is that there have been numerous complaints of a similar nature made about these devices and that Lime is well aware of these complaints," said Walker.In late February, Lime issued a warning to riders of a technical bug that caused sudden excessive braking, usually downhill. Lime says in those cases, the scooter didn't shut off. While Mahoney doesn't know if those cases are related, she doesn't believe her incident is the only one. "I want them to take responsibilities for these injuries that are occurring ... and I want people to be aware, it's not as safe as they think it is," said Mahoney.A Lime spokesperson declined to talk about Mahoney's incident but issued the following statement: “Our entire global fleet has now been fully updated with the final firmware fix that appears to have eliminated occurrences of excessive braking, and we continue to closely monitor the issue to ensure it is categorically resolved.” 2375

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A heartbroken dog owner is demanding answers from a motel in Mission Valley.Mary Prevost left her 4-year-old German Shepherd alone her room Saturday night when she went to dinner then found out later it had been hit and killed on Interstate 8.“I opened my door and my dog wasn’t there,” said Prevost, “I ran down to the front desk and said my dog wasn’t there and the woman said around 8:30 they had seen a dog running around in the parking lot.”Prevost says the motel staff said they tried calling her but they had dialed the wrong number.The dog owner then drove around Mission Valley as Saturday night turned into Sunday morning — then animal control rang.“She apologized and said that a dog that fit my description with a red collar had been hit on the highway and she was on the side of the road,” said Prevost through tears.“I planned to take her to Coronado beach the next day and instead I picked her up dead on the highway,” said PrevostPrevost had 4-year-old Valkyrie cremated on Sunday, but now she is grappling with Motel 6 management about how this happened.Prevost says the motel's risk managers told her the dog likely opened up the door on its own.“If they just called me or animal control or the police,” said Prevost, ”I could have gotten her because she was alive.”She says the hotel has video of the dog wandering the motel and the parking lot, but they won’t let her see it.Motel 6 has denied multiple requests by 10News for comment.Prevost says it just doesn’t seem fair to blame the dog.“The problem is even if she got the door open,” said Prevost, “they just let her go.” 1622

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local non-profit organization named "Promises2Kids" is helping children who are in San Diego's foster care system receive some of the structure and support that may be lacking due to the challenges of their home life."Having extra support and some stability is something I'm really grateful for because there's been so many times in my life when that's been absent," said Tiffani Hamilton, who has participated in the program for several years.Promises2Kids provides economic, educational, and emotional assistance, from purchasing school supplies and other items, to tutoring, to helping teenage children prepare and go through the college application process. They also provide mentors, who often form lifelong relationships with the students they guide.Hamilton's story is not unusual. She and her five siblings were raised by a single mother, who struggled with addiction and abusive relationships until her death. Hamilton was separated from her siblings when she entered the foster care system, bouncing from home to home. She credits Promises2Kids for helping give her the assistance and support she needed to achieve her goal of going to college."It's given me an experience that I never thought I would have. It's definitely shaped me into who I'm becoming.
