SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (KGTV) - Border Patrol agents arrested a teenager Tuesday on suspicion of smuggling heroin along Interstate 5 in San Clemente. The 19-year-old man was weaving in and out of lanes near Camino de Estrella about 3 a.m., agents said. He drove his 1997 Chevy pickup truck to a nearby gas station and agents followed to conduct a safety check. “During the encounter, the agents grew suspicious of the driver’s behavior and they decided to request for a K-9 team to respond. The K-9 alerted to the truck’s engine compartment,” agent Theron S. Francisco said in a news release. Agents said they found four packages of heroin inside the truck’s air intake box. The drugs weighed almost five pounds and had a street value of about 7,000. The driver, a U.S. citizen, faces felony drug smuggling charges. 824

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A drunken driver who went the wrong way and crashed head-on into another car in 4S Ranch, killing the other driver, was convicted Wednesday of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing injury.Jurors deadlocked on a second-degree murder count against Alexandria Bayne, but will return Thursday to resume deliberations in hopes of reaching a consensus. SAN DEIGO (KGTV) -- As the migrant caravan makes its way through Mexico, local attorneys and shelters in Tijuana are monitoring their progress, in case the immigrants arrive at the Tijuana and San Diego border.The group Federal Defenders of San Diego worked illegal entry cases during the last caravan in April. Kara Hartzler is one of their attorneys, she says theirs already a daily backlog with immigration cases and this caravan will further overwhelm the system.Hartzler says many immigrants from April's caravan are still in the asylum process.  It's estimated the new caravan is 4,000 to 7,000 immigrants in size, roughly three times bigger than the one in April. In Tijuana, shelters are having meetings to prepare for the possibility of a large arrival. In a series of tweets Monday morning, President Trump called the latest caravan a "national emergency" and threatened to cut off aid to certain Central American countries, adding that he's already alerted Border Patrol and the military.  1038

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 17-year-old from San Diego driving a vehicle police suspected to be stolen was shot by a detective during a traffic stop, Hemet police said Saturday.Detectives with the department's Crime Suppression Unit conducted the traffic stop at about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 300 block of North San Jacinto Street, Lt. Jeff Davis said."Detectives transitioned to a high risk stop after a records check revealed the vehicle was reported stolen from the San Diego area. An officer involved shooting occurred during the stop," Davis said.The San Diego teen was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and later released to his guardian after receiving treatment, according to the news release.It was unclear what led to the shooting, and a call to Davis by a reporter Saturday morning was not returned.No officers were injured in the encounter, and an investigation was ongoing. 910

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former Mira Mesa dentist who bilked insurance companies out of hundreds of thousands of dollars by submitting claims for procedures she never performed, including hundreds of supposed root canals, has been sentenced to six years in state prison, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office announced today.April Rose Ambrosio, 59, pleaded guilty to three counts of insurance fraud earlier this year for fraudulently billing insurance companies for 6,700, for which she received more than 0,000 from 10 insurance companies, according to prosecutors.The DA's Office said Ambrosio falsely claimed she performed 800 root canals on 100 patients, despite not having specialized training as an endodontist to perform such procedures.Ambrosio was sentenced earlier this month, and in addition to a six- year prison term, was ordered to pay 5,633 in restitution. Her license to practice dentistry was also suspended last year, a few months after she was charged.Prosecutors say the fraud occurred between 2014 and 2018. During that time, Ambrosio billed for work she said occurred on days her office was closed and billed for more than 100 root canals during a three- month period, all of which were supposedly performed for a family of four, according to the DA's Office. She also billed for root canals on teeth patients didn't have or double billed for teeth she previously said she performed root canals on, the DA's Office said.``The way this defendant bilked the system is astounding,'' District Attorney Summer Stephan said. ``Unfortunately, when insurance companies get ripped off, consumers ultimately pay the price through higher premiums.'' 1683
