President-elect Joe Biden named former General Lloyd J. Austin as his nominee for secretary of defense on Wednesday. If confirmed, Austin would become the first Black person to lead the Pentagon. At a press conference in Wilmington, Delaware on Wednesday, Biden introduced Austin as a man who is "breaking down barriers and blazing a trail," adding that he is "going to do it again" if confirmed.Biden called for Austin to be confirmed "swiftly," adding that the country "needs his expertise.""It will be my sincere honor and privilege to return to the department and to lead our great service members and civilians in accomplishing the mission of ensuring our nation's security," Austin said Wednesday. He also added that he would give Biden clear and "unvarnished council" when it comes to military matters.Austin also said that he had benefitted greatly from leadership above him throughout his career, citing the influence of former Sec. of State Colin Powell, among others. In addition to needing Senate confirmation, Austin will also need a waiver, as there is seven-year waiting period after leaving the military in order to become defense secretary. Some Senate Democrats, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren, have signaled that they are hesitant to grant Austin a waiver."I would not be asking for this exception if I didn't think this moment in history called for it," Biden said.President Donald Trump's first defense secretary, James Mattis, also required such a waiver upon his nomination.Austin, a former four-star general, was the 12th head of Central Command from 2013 through 2016 under President Barack Obama.Austin followed Mattis in leading Central Command. He also served as the vice chief of staff of the Army. 1732

Remote learning is a new challenge for many students who were previously used to roughly eight hours of face-to-face learning in a classroom each day. Some students are struggling to learn in this new environment, and while some parents can afford a tutor to bridge any learning gap, most families simply cannot. However, there are some new affordable and even free live tutoring options for those families.“We developed out two new products to aid our customers,” said Steven Cox, the CEO and Founder of TakeLessons.com.Take Lessons originally offered 1-on-1 tutoring online, but since the pandemic started it has launched two more affordable, live group tutoring programs. The first option is a month and offers unlimited live-tutoring sessions. The only catch is instead of the lessons being 1-on-1, each lesson is with a group of five to 20 students at a time.“It’s really a tremendous benefit for people who still need to get great education with quality teachers but simply it is out of their range to do private lessons,” said Cox.For some families, though, even a month is more than they can afford, so Take Lessons now has a free option. This option allows students to watch a live lesson, but instead of video chatting with a tutor, they have to message them. The groups of students in these live sessions are also much larger.“It is our way of giving back that I believe right now and where we are as a country is needed more than anything else,” added Cox.Take Lessons is not the only organization offering affordable and free help.“There are a lot of free resources that are available,” said Francesco Lecciso, co-founder of Brainfuse.Brainfuse has partnered with hundreds of public libraries around the country to provide free online live tutoring. Brainfuse provides the platform and the libraries provide the free, live tutors available to students in almost every state. To access the free resource, Brainfuse recommends contacting your local library. It has the portal system and user information to gain free access.Between Brainfuse, Take Lesson, and other services out there, online learning can be a more equitable experience and one that helps all students thrive. “One of the advantages is there are so many options, so you can observe your child and see what works best,” said Lecciso. "Some kids work best just going through self-paced lessons and other kids need human mediation, so seek that out through free resources.” 2462

Vanessa Guillen on July 29 prior to the #IamVanessaGuillen bill being released. The family is planning to introduce the bill to Congress on July 30. Guillen's remains were found last week near the Leon River in Texas. The soldier went missing from Fort Hood back in April. Her family believes Vanessa was sexually harassed by Spc. Aaron Robinson. President Donald Trump travels to Pittsburgh on Tuesday after the worst anti-Semitic crime in American history, bringing with him a pulsing anger that his rhetoric is being blamed for the attack and intent on proving to his critics he can behave like a president. For Trump, the role of consoler has sometimes come uneasily and, in his view, without tangible benefit. Trump has complained in the past that so-called "presidential" moments have gone unnoticed by his critics and unheralded in the media, leading him to wonder what the point of it all was. This weekend, after Trump forcefully decried anti-Semitism during campaign appearances, he again protested to confidantes that the message wasn't received with praise, according to people familiar with the conversations. Along with many of his aides, he viewed the continued questions about his divisive rhetoric as petty partisan attacks launched by his political opponents.Still, after discussions with advisers that included daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner, who are Jewish, Trump declared his intent to visit Pittsburgh. The trip comes amid a last-minute midterm campaign push and has forestalled, for now, a planned address on immigration.Trump has expressed concern his midterm messaging could be knocked off-kilter by the attack. Pittsburgh's mayor called on Monday for Trump to wait to visit until after burials are complete, but with an 11-rally itinerary set for the end of the week, there was little flexibility in the President's schedule. His daughter and Kushner, will join Trump in Pittsburgh, along with first lady Melania Trump, who has sometimes worked with mixed results to soften her husband's public image. He is expected to meet with some members of the Tree of Life congregation, who lost 11 members when a gunman opened fire inside the synagogue on Saturday morning. 1883

Rescuers in Mexico City pushed through debris Thursday at an elementary school in an urgent attempt to reach a 12-year-girl, two days after a powerful earthquake trapped her and killed at least 250 people across central Mexico. The rescue attempt at the capital's Colegio Enrique Rebsamen came amid concerns the structure could buckle further. It was one of many searches underway at buildings that collapsed in the region after Tuesday's magnitude 7.1 quake, the country's second major temblor in less than two weeks. 525
