CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - Each Monday, a group of dedicated seniors gather in their woodshop, on a mission to make the holidays a little brighter for North County kids in need. The woodworking elves of the La Costa Glen senior living community in Carlsbad have spent nearly a year creating 100 handmade toys of all shapes and sizes.The toys have up to 39 pieces, crafted with various types of wood like walnut, cherry, and mahogany. RELATED: 10 special holiday events coming to San DiegoFive woodworkers spent the year making around 4,000 parts for the toys."It's all handmade, and a lot of love and care goes into putting it together," said Tom Woodbury, a member of the toymaking team. Countless hours have gone into the effort. Among the toys are a truck, grasshopper, and mouse. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - A photographer in Carlsbad is helping to preserve the memory of the Greatest Generation, one portrait at a time.John Riedy works with The Greatest Generations Foundation. The group takes Veterans back to the battlefields on which they fought.During the trips, Riedy takes a portrait of each vet on their battlefield."It helps them realize that we’re not going to forget these guys," Riedy says. "When they’re gone, their legacies are going to live on."Over the last 12 years, Riedy has gone on nearly 50 trips with the Foundation and taken close to 300 portraits.For the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, he chose 75 of his favorite to hang in two galleries near Normandy and Omaha Beach."I think they were blown away to see their portraits up there," Riedy says of the reaction the Vets had when they got a first look at the galleries.Riedy says it's his personal way to honor the sacrifices they made."When you step onto Omaha beach, or you go to that cemetery at Omaha, and you see what they were up against when you see those cliffs, it's awe-inspiring," he says. "It’s like a switch flipped inside me. From them on I knew this was going to be my calling."Riedy and the Foundation have started to expand the program beyond World War II Veterans. CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago’s mayor has announced that the nation’s third-largest school district will not welcome students back to the classroom to start the school year, instead relying on remote instruction.Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Wednesday that the shift for Chicago Public Schools is based on a recent uptick in coronavirus cases.The district says it will implement remote learning through the first quarter and work with the Chicago Department of Public Health to determine if it is safe to open with a hybrid learning model in the second quarter, which begins on November 9.“As we build out this remote learning model and seek to establish a hybrid learning model in the second quarter, we will continue to support and collaborate with parents and school leaders to create safe, sustainable learning environments for our students,” said Lightfoot.The district last month unveiled a tentative hybrid plan for the fall semester, which begins Sept. 8. (KGTV) — Police say they were tasked with breaking up a crowd of 50 to 100 beachgoers having a large party on Friday amid a ban on gatherings in the county due to the pandemic.Carlsbad Police say the large crowd of mostly young people was having a large party and drinking near the Rue Des Chateaux beach access point on North Ocean St. at about 6 p.m.Police said when they arrived, the crowd voluntarily dispersed and no fines were given.A witness who sent ABC 10News a photo of the scene said it's not the first time this has happened. The witness said that large gatherings and parties in their neighborhood and at the beach have become a daily occurrence. CARLSBAD (CNS) - A report of domestic violence triggered an hours-long standoff in a Carlsbad neighborhood Friday night into Saturday morning, police said.Around 10 p.m. Friday, a woman called police and said her husband had assaulted her, cut her hand with a knife and threatened to kill her before she could escape, according to Carlsbad Police Lt. Kevin Lehan. The woman also told police her husband was heavily intoxicated.Police headed to the couple's residence, on Juniper Avenue between Interstate 5 and Garfield Street, and found the man had barricaded himself inside, Lehan said.The man wouldn't cooperate with officers and after a few hours, a SWAT team forced entry into the home through the front door and a window, according to Lehan.Officers searched the home and ultimately found the man hiding under a bed. He was taken into custody without further incident.It was determined the man was unarmed when police arrested him, Lehan said. 957
