Congress passed a bipartisan bill to address the opioid epidemic, and this week the president signed it into law. It's one of the few things that brought Democrats and Republicans together.“Opioids is definitely an issue where there's a lot of bipartisan agreement,” says Republican strategist Brian Bartlett. “We saw the Senate pass their version 99-1. The House also overwhelmingly passed legislation back in June the first time around to address this issue.”Democratic strategist Brandon Neal agrees, saying the issue of opioids is a bipartisan issue affecting everyone. On average, a person dies from an opioid overdose every eight minutes, according to the CDC.“Right now, we're in a point in our society where every average person, everyday person, is affected by this,” Neal says. “So, one pill kills.”The impact of the problem is so big, it forced both political parties to come together to pass a bill that will boost programs to treat addictions, keep a closer eye on prescriptions and promote research to find new drugs that are not as addictive.“I think the next step is to start enacting some of the changes this legislation offered, because in a lot of ways, this was a comprehensive bill, but we need to see what's going to be most effective and what works,” Bartlett says.Just this week, there was a small glimmer of hope. Early data shows the number of overdose deaths are beginning to level off and have even slightly dropped, according to Health and Human Secretary Alex Azar.“The seemingly relentless trend of rising overdose deaths seems to be finally bending in the right direction,” Azar says. 1623

CLEVELAND — After the team announced it will be changing its name, Cleveland Indians owner Paul Dolan sent a letter to fans addressing the decision.Dolan said that as a fifth-generation Clevelander, he understands the impact and importance of the decision to change the name. He said while many fans may be upset that the team they grew up with will soon have a different name, the most important part of the team isn’t changing."Like many of you, I grew up with this name and have many great memories of past Indians teams: the World Series appearances, Cy Young winners, the longest win streak in MLB history, and countless other unforgettable moments that brought our team, fans, and community together,” Dolan wrote. “These memories will forever stay in our hearts, minds, and record books, and we will continue to recognize our ball club’s remarkable legacy. While I have often associated these unforgettable memories with the name Indians, I sincerely believe Cleveland is the most important part of our team name.”Dolan credited the team’s progressive history and said the decision to change the name only helps keep up with the organization’s high standard.“Ultimately, we found our organization is at its best when we can unify our community and bring people together around our shared interest in our home team – and we believe a new name will allow us to do this more fully,” Dolan wrote. “We often celebrate being the first team in the American League to have an African American player in Larry Doby and the first African American manager in Frank Robinson. These forward-thinking acts by our predecessors have helped shaped our team and community, and today’s decision helps us continue to live up to these high standards and expectations.”When the team announced the decision to change the name, it was made clear that this was not going to happen overnight and that while the process is ongoing, Cleveland’s baseball team will still go by the “Indians.”“Our decision to change the current name is phase one of a multi-phased process. Future decisions, including the new name and brand development, are complex and will take time. We believe our new name will take us into the future and proudly represent this storied franchise for decades and generations to come. In light of the importance, we will not rush these decisions,” Dolan wrote to fans.Dolan ended his letter to fans thanking them for their support and said his love for baseball and the city of Cleveland is a driving force behind his belief that the organization can make a “positive impact within our city to unite and inspire those around us to do the same.”Read his full letter to fans below: 2683

CLAREMORE, Okla. -- Sequoyah High School students were not afraid to speak out after they said school officials told them they had to remove American flags mounted on their vehicles. On Thursday, a student showed up to the school, located about 40 minutes northwest of Tulsa, with a flag mounted on his car. “As soon as we got out of our cars in the parking lot they were already on us trying to get them down," student Kennith Hoover said. “The American flag symbolizes no racism and it's just strictly for America's freedom," student Jake Storts said. It's a symbol of patriotism, freedom and history. “I think it’s a fight that they picked that they will never win," local business owner Larry Banzet said. “The flag was in great shape, it was mounted properly," Hoover said. "It looked perfect. There was no kind of disrespect about it and they told him to take it down.” Friday, a group of students decided to stand with their friend. “You can’t tell a kid to take the flag down," Hoover said. "We disagree with that so that’s how it started.” “We’re not allowed to fly them because he can’t allow the Islamic or the KKK flag then he can’t allow the American flag," Storts said. Hoover says the school's reasoning change more than once. “Yesterday they said it was a distraction to drivers and students," he said. "Today they were telling me 'you have it mounted wrong' and then they told me it was illegal to fly it the way I was behind my car.” The school district released the following statement to Scripps station KJRH in Tulsa:"Sequoyah Public School is a patriotic school and surrounding community. Our campus has two sets of American and Oklahoma Flags, with one set including our Eagle mascot flag. Flags are displayed in our classrooms and our students recite the Pledge of Allegiance in their daily routine. We want our students to understand the importance of being patriotic, within the guidelines, and to be very understanding of the Flag Code and flag etiquette. Today was a win/win opportunity to work with students to come up with an appropriate solution for displaying the American Flag, Oklahoma Flag and the Eagle mascot flag on their vehicles while on campus."  2299

Cyntoia Brown was just 16 years old when she shot and killed a man whom she said had bought her for sex. Now, 14 years later, she could have a shot at getting out of prison.  Brown was convicted of murder after she shot and killed 43-year old realtor Johnny Allen in 2004. Her lawyers said she was a victim of sex trafficking. Now 30, Brown has a clemency hearing at 10 a.m. local time Wednesday. A state parole board will listen to her case and make a recommendation about whether to grant her clemency. The story sparked national outrage last year after several celebrities, including Kim Kardashian and Rihanna, posted Brown's story on Twitter and Instagram. Her attorneys said Brown had been forced into prostitution and that had Allen paid her for sex. 784
