For decades, the Del Mar Races have been more than just horses. It's the food, drinks and fashion that San Diegan's spend all year anxiously awaiting."It brings the festivities. Instead of everyone just coming for a race day, it makes the women have a reason to put something pretty on like hats or go all out with a dress," said Deena Von Yokes. For the past 8 years, Deena was a judge for the race's annual hat contest. But as COVID-19 kept fans away this year, she and organizers didn't let the contest take a back seat."Home turf club is what we’re calling it. You can create your own with your 'friend bubble' or 'business bubble' or 'work bubble'. People can still celebrate and have fun."And by celebrate, she wanted everyone to dress up from head to toe."Take a picture of your head to your toes because its about the hat but it’s also the complete look," Deena described. To enter the virtual contest this year, participants had to upload their entire look on social media using the #DelMarHatsContest and tagging the Del Mar Races official account."People who have never done it before can do something crazy so I’m kind of curious to see what happens and to see what people come up with."Everyone proved COVID-19 couldn't stop San Diego."We’re showing how resilient we are all in the spirit of fashion, and in this case, in horse racing because that’s a tradition here and we’re going to keep that alive."Winner will be announced July 11th. The grand prize is two tickets to 2021's Breeder's Cup. 1513
Former New York Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner is set to be released from prison about three months earlier than initially scheduled, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons website. In May 2017, Weiner pleaded guilty to one charge of transferring obscene material to a minor in federal court in Manhattan. The charges stem from communications that the former congressman had with a 15f-year-old girl on social media sites between January and March 2016."This crime was my rock bottom," Weiner said in court. "I have no excuse. ... I victimized a young person who deserved better."Weiner was a prominent Democratic congressman before he resigned in 2011 following the release of sexually-charged, and sometimes explicit, text messages he exchanged with women other than his wife. During his run for New York City mayor in 2013, more sexually-explicit exchanges with other women were released before he was soundly defeated in that race.Weiner's estranged wife, Huma Abedin, was a top aide to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. The federal investigation into Weiner ended up playing a critical role in the 2016 election when emails potentially relevant to the FBI's investigation into Clinton's email server?surfaced on Weiner's laptop. Former FBI Director James Comey announced the discovery of the emails less than two weeks before election day, only to conclude two days before the balloting that the emails changed nothing in the investigation. Democrats blame that announcement in part for Clinton's loss.Weiner was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison, and reported to prison November 6, 2017. He is currently located at FMC Devens in Massachusetts. His prison term of 21 months would have ended in August 2019, and this new release date is now set for May 14, 2019, according to the website."This projected release date includes credit for good conduct time earned and good conduct time that may be earned throughout the remainder of his sentence," read a statement from the Bureau of Prisons to CNN. 2048

Friday, Oct. 16 has been dubbed Global Cat Day, a day dedicated to saving cats and kittens from being killed. This comes at a time when many longstanding threats to felines have the potential to race forward, according to Alley Cat Allies. The organization dedicated to protecting cats says local shelters have seen an increase in impoundments as the pandemic continues to hit families financially, leaving them unable to care for their beloved animals."Too often, our disconnect from society during the pandemic is allowing dangerous animal control and shelter policies to advance unchecked in our communities,” said the organization’s president, Becky Robin son. “Global Cat Day is a reminder that the international movement to protect cats can never stop, even when so much of the world does."In addition to families turning over their felines, the organization says less cats are being spayed or neutered due to many veterinary clinics operating at reduced capacity.Robinson said these developments will impact cats for years to come.“Global Cat Day 2020 is a day to c
