That leased car gathering dust in your driveway might have hidden cash in it.Dealers facing tight inventories are scrambling to buy good used cars to resell. They might be willing to purchase your leased car for more than the buyout price in your contract.¡°I haven¡¯t seen used car prices go up this much in years,¡± says Oren Weintraub, president of car concierge service Authority Auto. ¡°We are seeing a large percentage or leases with equity in them.¡±With the pandemic reshaping the car business, experts recommend extracting that equity by selling the car outright, using it to offset the cost of returning the car or leveraging that value to make a better deal on your next car.Where does the equity come from?Your lease payment is based on the residual value of your vehicle. This is a prediction of the car¡¯s value at the end of the lease which, because of the pandemic, is now often too low.This means you might be able to arrange to sell the car for the higher price, pay off the lease and then pocket the difference. It also means you could dodge over-mileage penalties or end the lease early.For example, Scot Hall of the lease-trading site Swapalease said his wife has been working from home during the pandemic and decided she didn¡¯t need her leased 2017 GMC Yukon Denali XL. She ended her lease six months early ¡ª saving the remaining monthly payments ¡ª and sold her SUV to a local dealer, pocketing a check for ,500.Know where you standHere¡¯s how to know if you have equity in your leased car:Find the residual value in your lease contract. This is the amount you can buy the car for at the end of the lease (there might also be a disposition fee for this transaction).Get today¡¯s buyout price. If you want to end your lease early, call the lease holder and ask for a current buyout price. Hall says you can usually estimate this price by simply adding the total of all the remaining payments to the residual value.Look up the current market value. Use an online pricing guide, such as Edmunds.com, to find the trade-in value of your car, factoring in the current mileage, options and condition. If you¡¯re thinking of selling your car to a neighbor, look for the private party price. Or you can get a nearly instant cash offer from a local dealer, Carmax or an online car retailer such as Carvana, Shift or Vroom. Give real-world offers more weight in your calculations.Do the math. Subtract the residual value from the current market price or cash offer. Be sure to check with the DMV in your state before you make a deal.Trade in the car to a dealer. If you decide you want another car, you could sell your leased car outright first and then plunk down the cash on the new ride. But trading it in could save you a considerable amount of sales tax.Sell your vehicle to an online service or a local dealer. Carvana, Shift and Vroom will pick up the vehicle and do all the paperwork. However, Carvana says it will not accept leased cars as trade-ins.Return your lease without penaltiesKnowing there is equity in your car puts you in a stronger position when you return your leased vehicle.For example, Weintraub had a client who was ready to return a leased car with excess mileage and minor body damage. TAMPA BAY, Fla. ¡ª Thanksgiving is a day of gratitude for many, but it also marks 10 years of Justin Gaertner's Alive Day.Gaertner's Alive Day marks the day he survived injuries overseas."It's a day to remember how far you've come in life and that nothing can hold you back," said Gaertner. November 26, 2010, Gaertner and his best friend, Gabriel Martinez, were on a clearance mission in Marjah in Afghanistan's southwestern Helmand province. While sweeping after a vehicle in front of them, the vehicle rolled over an IED, Gaertner said Martinez hit a secondary IED and as he swept to secure a landing zone for a medical helicopter, he triggered a tertiary IED. Both lost their legs."I remember every second of that moment. The smell. The looks. The sound. Everything that was going on, and it's something I'll never forget. But regardless, he was right there by my side the whole time, throughout the whole thing," Gaertner said.A photo shows the two with injured hands, holding each other's pinky fingers. They had each other's backs in the Marines through their recovery. Now, both work as computer forensic analysts for ICE Homeland Security Investigations, Martinez for HSI Denver, and Gaertner for HSI Tampa."We never let each other go because going through something like that by yourself is hard enough and then having him by my side that whole time, I guess there's really no feeling or words that can describe having your best friend, your brother right there next to you throughout the entire journey," Gaertner said.They were brought on through the Human Exploitation Rescue Operative (HERO) program."The child exploitation cases are really close to my heart, close to everybody's heart, and it's just nice when you come home and know you made a difference today," he said.Gaertner said he's now worked on close to 300 federal and state cases, dealing with things like child exploitation, drug smuggling, and national security. He also helped in the aftermath of the shooting attack at Naval Air Station Pensacola.He said the past ten years have been a journey."Highs lows, accomplishments of conquering challenges, starting my family, marrying the love of my life, having a beautiful daughter together. It's just been a journey and something I don't take for granted because I shouldn't be here, but I am, and I'm trying to make the best of it," he said.He said his wife and daughter are his rocks. "With the challenges of 2020, the challenges over the last 10 years of my life, my daughter has been a blessing. We lost a daughter in 2018 and have been praying every day since then for the arrival of our daughter Callie now and on top of her I've prayed for a wife such as mine, and I couldn't have made it over the past few years without her," Gaertner said.His wife, Paige, said while Thanksgiving before was a day to acknowledge blessings, now it's also gratitude, celebrating Justin's life."I think Justin's greatest ability in life is to adapt and overcome, and to me and having a daughter now and him being a father, I think it's just an example to all of us that no matter what we go through, I mean losing his legs has been a huge trial in his life, but he has done it and overcame it like it was a blessing to him," she said. Tacked onto the coronavirus stimulus bill is new legislation tackling one of the most controversial practices in health care ¨C surprise medical bills.That's when you go to the hospital or have an elective procedure and then later find out some of the doctors or facilities were out of network, meaning you could owe tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars.The most impactful part about the legislation is that patients would no longer get those surprise out-of-network bills for emergency care or for a planned procedure. They will instead be billed an in-network rate.Out-of-network providers would have to give patients a heads up on estimated charges, at least three days.Air ambulance companies would also not be able to charge more than in-network costs. Ground ambulances were not included.Insurance and providers have to go to arbitration to work out the final payment. It's a complex solution advocates say could end up costing Americans more in the long run.¡°So, a mediation process that some states have put in place, but research has shown that it increases the likelihood that consumers face higher premium costs on the back end,¡± said Clare Krusing with the Coalition Against Surprise Medical Billing.That Coalition had been pushing for policies that, in their simplest form, would have essentially made in and out-of-network rates the same. Savings that in-part would have funded community health centers.¡°Not only is that approach the cleanest way of dealing with this, but it also saves the patients and taxpayers the most money, who are going to save billion over 10 years.The group plans to continue to push for more terms around that arbitration process to prevent abuse, driving up costs.None of the new surprise medical bill legislation takes effect until January 2022. 1803

The banana phone is back.A startup that licenses the Nokia phone brand has unveiled a new version of the 8110, a curved mobile phone that was first released in 1996 and featured in "The Matrix."The phone, which is offered in banana yellow and black, will sell for €79 (). It comes loaded with a new version of the game Snake, Finnish startup HMD said in a statement."This is a return to the glory years of Nokia," said Ian Fogg, senior analyst at IHS Markit. "But it also includes all the new technology."The 8110 comes with 4G, and a handful of apps including Google Maps, Facebook and Twitter. But it doesn't have a flashy operating system and users won't be able to download other popular apps.Fogg said that basic -- or "feature" -- phones are appealing because they are reliable, and can run for a long time on a single charge. The 8110 goes 25 days in standby mode, for example.Nokia used to be the world's largest maker of mobile phones, but it struggled to adapt to the era of smartphones and compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung.Microsoft purchased the company's handset business in 2013, but later unwound the deal. Nokia now focuses on making technology for telecommunications networks.HMD, which has licensed the Nokia brand since 2016, sold over 70 million handsets in 2017, according to IHS.
