SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- While the San Diego Padres lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday night in Game 1 of the National League Division Series, fans were thankful to be able to participate in the action alongside other San Diegans.While much of the Friar Faithful couldn’t make it to Texas to cheer on the Padres, the playoff excitement was still felt downtown, and for some, that was enough.“Unfortunately, you can’t watch it live, but to be surrounded with a group of people that are all watching it and all really excited, it’s pretty magical,” said Andrea Durkee, a resident of downtown and Padres fan. “I think we all needed something just happy and exciting and to look forward to, and this is absolutely the best thing we could have downtown.”Some fans watched the first game in the best-of-five series from Petco Park’s Tailgate Lot, which was transformed into a drive-in style viewing party.“I have season tickets actually, and we weren’t able to go this year, which is a huge bummer, but we’ve made the best out of it,” said Catie Vance. “We’re excited that we got to do this, at least.”Spectators on the other side were just as excited.“Grew up in LA, my grandfather had season tickets, I’ve probably seen 100 Dodger games at Dodger stadium I haven’t seen them win the world series yet, I’d love to see that, but I guess if someone has to go and the Padres do go, there’s worse things that can happen in life,” said Michael Martin, a Dodger’s fan.Facial coverings were required for all fans outside of their vehicles, and vehicles were spaced 20 feet apart to encourage social distancing. 1606

San Diego (KGTV)- A local middle and high school team sweep a popular robotics competition beating out groups from all over the world.They call themselves “Team Inspiration.” The group of students has been working with robotics for nearly ten years.The team is comprised of six different schools in San Diego, including: Del Norte High, Scripps Ranch High, Rancho Bernardo High, Westview High, The Cambridge School, and Black Mountain Middle School.Last month the team competed in the 2020 International RoboSub Competition. Each team had to build an underwater robot.“The basic tasks include going underwater, seeing and recognizing images underwater, and going to wave points underwater,” says team member Colin Szeto.This Is the second year the group participated in the competition. Due to COVID-19, the competition was done virtually this time around.“It was a pretty good equalizer because we all got the same zoom playing field,” says Aditya Mavalankar.The student updated their robot design from last year and built an additional robot for the competition.“The idea was that both of them would go in the water together to distribute the tasks so that we could have more of an advantage,” says Ashiria Goel.The students also built the sensor navigation parts on the devices. It can “basically tell how far it is from other objects,” says Mavalankar. “We have cameras on multiple sides of the robots. We have hydrophones that’’s able to create an acoustic pinger in the pool.”Team Inspiration took home first place in the overall competition, technical design, and website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Voters across San Diego County could end up with the final say over massive housing developments proposed for the backcountry.That's if voters themselves approve an initiative headed to the March 2020 ballot. The measure, called S.O.S., for Safeguard our San Diego Countryside, would trigger a public countywide vote anytime the County Board of Supervisors moves to increase density in the general plan to make way for more housing. "When you put cities where there are no roads, where there isn't fire service, there aren't schools, the cost of the infrastructure is going to be borne by the general taxpayer," said Mark Jackson, with the Yes on S.O.S. campaign. But a group of developers, economists and union are sounding the alarm about the initiative, which they say would make the region's housing crisis even worse. A county report found that the public vote would add a year of delay to projects and increase the cost by as much as .3 million. Meanwhile, housing prices would rise as supply remains tight. "Many new officers have young families, and those families are hit the hardest by anti-growth and anti-housing measures like S.O.S.," said Jack Schaeffer, president of the San Diego Police Officers Association. Both sides agree San Diego County needs more housing. However, the proponents of the measure note the general plan already calls for 60,000 new homes for all income levels. Those opposed counter that those would largely be expensive, built on multi-acre lots. They add that this initiative could impact development proposals with as little as six housing units. The initiative made its way to the March ballot after the "yes" campaign got 107,000 signatures. That's the same election in which voters will decide the fate of the massive Newland Sierra development in Escondido, a 2,000-home master plan the county approved in 2018.
