FUZHOU, July 27 (Xinhua) -- A total of 274,300 people had been evacuated by Sunday afternoon in southeast China's Fujian Province as a strong typhoon was approaching, said the provincial flood control headquarters.     About 52,301 fishing boats had also returned to harbor as of 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. Disaster relief personnel had been helping people on fishing vessels get on shore, said Yang Zhiying, head of the flood control headquarters in Fujian.     Typhoon Fung Wong, the eighth tropical storm of this year, turned into a strong typhoon at 8:00 p.m. Its eye was monitored at the sea about 210 kilometers to the east of Taitung County in Taiwan, according to the provincial observatory.     It moved westward and was forecast to land Taiwan on Sunday night or Monday morning. Its observatory forecast that rainstorm would continue on Monday in the province, which sits on the west of the Taiwan Straits.     From Monday night to Tuesday, winds are expected to reach force7 to 9 in the coastal cities of Fujian. Rainstorms or torrential rainstorms are forecast in the cities of Ningde, Fuzhou, Putian and Quanzhou.     "The continuous heavy rain is likely to trigger flood or other secondary disasters," Yang said.

BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has called on the country's top scientists to make more contributions to the social and economic development with more science and technology achievements. Wen made the remark while attending a meeting Tuesday for both the 14th Congress of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Ninth Congress of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao delivers a speech at the conference of the 14th Congress of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the 9th Congress of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) in Beijing, capital of China, June 24, 2008.    He highlighted the importance of science and technology for the reconstruction in quake-ravaged areas when he reported the latest situation of the relief work to the attending scientists.     Scientists and experts specializing in various of disciplines and fields of research should work closely and provide more scientific evidence and consultations to decision-making, Wen said.     He said after China experienced major disasters and incidents this year the social and economic development had been better than predicted due to Party and government endeavors. BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) on Saturday said it expects an increase in grain output for the fifth consecutive year.     The country has harvested nearly 80 percent of its autumn crops and expects 2008 to be a bumper year, the ministry stated.     The State Grain Information Center earlier estimated that this year's grain output would reach 511.5 million tons, up 10 million tons from 2007. Farmers reap paddy rice in the field in Jiangzhuang village, Donghai county, east China's Jiangsu Province, Oct. 11, 2008. Large parts of China have witnessed crop harvest in this golden autumn.Higher grain production happened in spite of natural disasters and troubled domestic and international economic environments, the MOA noted.     The output increase was attributed to government subsidies, pest control and more advance agricultural techniques, the ministry said.     The central government allocated 102.86 billion yuan (15.1 billion U.S. dollars) in agriculture subsidies this year, doubling the money from 2007. CHENGDU, May 13 (Xinhua) -- A senior official with the Sichuan Provincial government said Tuesday the death toll in the province has exceeded 12,000, and is still rising.     Li Chengyun, vice governor of Sichuan, said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon that the death toll was based on incomplete figures tallied by 4:00 p.m. Tuesday. He said another 26,206 people were injured, and more than 9,400 people were buried in debris.     Li also provided a breakdown of the death toll, including 161 in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, 7,395 in Mianyang City, 2,648 in Deyang City, 959 in the provincial capital Chengdu and 700 in Guangyuan City. Other casualties were reported in cities including Ya'an, Ziyang and the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Photo taken on May 13, 2008 shows the scene of the earthquake-hit Beichuan County, about 160 kilometers northeast of the epicenter of Wenchuan County, southwest China's Sichuan Province. Beichuan County is badly damaged in Monday's quake, with great numbers of buildings collapsed and landslides around the county.    The death toll climbed from an earlier tally provided by the Ministry of Civil Affairs, which put the Sichuan death toll at 11,608. Authorities said the death toll might change every hour, as they heard reports from rescuers who were seizing every minute to pull out bodies from the earthquake rubble.     The earthquake, which centered on the province's Wenchuan County at 2:28 p.m. Monday, has left the province in chaos. More than 3.46 million houses were wracked, Li said.     Li said he was deeply saddened by the super earthquake. He called on both officials and the masses in Sichuan to speed up efforts to fight the disaster and rescue themselves.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who arrived in Sichuan Monday afternoon to oversee rescue work, ordered the clearance of rocks and mud slides that were blocking roads to the epicenter by midnight on Tuesday.     "People are trapped in debris; we must use every second," he told an emergency meeting at 7:00 a.m. Tuesday.     On Tuesday afternoon, a brigade of about 20 soldiers have reached Yingxiu Town of the earthquake epicenter Wenchuan, the disaster relief headquarters in the Chengdu Military Area Command said.     The soldiers reported they saw more than 70 percent of the roads in the town were wracked, and nearly all bridges collapsed. A large number of people were believed to be under the debris.     They said 3,000 people were known to have survived, and the town's total population is 12,000. No information on detailed casualties could be available.     Li Shiming, commander of the Chengdu Military Area Command, said the soldiers had distributed food and water to children and injured people in the town, and more supplies would be airdropped to the area.

hina was 249 million U.S. dollars, increasing by 218.4 percent from 2004. China's export to and import from Laos were respectively 164million U.S. dollars and 85 million U.S. dollars, rising by 162.4 percent and 653.8 percent from 2004.     Till the end of 2007, Laos had accumulatively invested 17 million U.S. dollars in China, and the latter's non-financial direct investment accumulatively reached 146 million U.S. dollars.     While China and Laos maintained a good momentum of development on political relations, they also expanded the range of trade and economic cooperation. The cooperation with governments, regional bodies, non-governmental organizations and private sectors have been intensified and deepened, Bouasone said.     The Third GMS Summit, with a theme of "Enhancing Competitiveness Through Greater Connectivity", aims to sustain and deepen economic cooperation and integration efforts among the GMS countries in order to better meet development challenges and realize the common vision of an integrated, harmonious and prosperous subregion.
