Having children will make you happier than staying childless, according to a new study, but not until later in life, when they have flown the nest.A team of researchers at Heidelberg University in Germany found that parents tend to be happier than non-parents in old age, but this only holds if their kids have moved out.Previous research has suggested that parenthood, social networks and marital status affect the well-being and mental health of older people, and this latest study looks at the effects of family status.Scientists asked 55,000 people age 50 and over from 16 European countries about their mental well-being, and results suggest "the positive aspects of parenthood dominate when getting older."One of the biggest factors is that children become a form of social support, and the researchers point out that social support networks are associated with greater happiness and less loneliness and can act as a buffer against stressful events."The results suggest that the finding of a negative link between children and well-being and mental health may not generalize to older people whose children have often left home already," the study says."As stress associated with balancing the competing demands of childcare, work and personal life decreases, once people get older and their children leave (home), the importance of children as caregivers and social contacts might prevail."However, children who still live at home are shown to have a negative effect on well-being.Christoph Becker, who formed part of the research team, told CNN that having a social network corresponds to greater life satisfaction, but that doesn't have to come from children.Older people without children could get similar benefits from other close social connections with whom they can share issues and problems, he added.Becker told CNN there are plans to track happiness for the same people over multiple years to study how well being evolves as people get older."Literature has suggested that there might be U-shaped connection between age and happiness: people become less happy in middle age, but more happy in older age," said Becker."We want to test if we find a similar relationship in our data, depending again on parenthood and social networks."Previous research on the subject has been mixed.A report by Princeton University and Stony Brook University published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found "very little difference" between the life satisfaction of parents and people without children, once other factors -- such as income, education, religion and health -- were factored out, said Arthur Stone, one of the study's co-authors.Another study, by the Open University in England, found childless couples were happier with their relationships and their partners than parents were, and were doing more work on their relationships than parenting couples. 2895

Here are this week's hottest home video releases. Find them on disc, or streaming services such as iTunes, Vudu, Amazon and Google Play. The House with A Clock in its WallsJack Black and Cate Blanchett star in the adaptation of the supernatural John Bellairs YA novel, about a boy who is sent to live with his oddball uncle (Black) in a creaky old house, and deal with the magic-conjuring next-door neighbor (Blanchett). Director Eli Roth, who cut his teeth on hardcore horror fare such as "Hostel," tones his fright game down but still manages to deliver family-friendly thrills. Extras include several featurettes on characters and effects, as well as deleted scenes with commentary and a gag reel. Some Like it Hot (Criterion)Director Billy Wilder's 1959 comedy continues to endure as one of the most beloved movies in the history of cinema. Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon star as musicians who witness a mob hit and go incognito by masquerading as women. Marilyn Monroe turns in one of her most memorable performances. A fresh 4K transfer makes the film shimmer. Extras include a tribute booklet, 1989 commentary from film historian Howard Suber and a 1988 French TV interview with Lemmon.VenomTom Hardy goes into deep-dive CGI mode to deliver a devilishly humorous split-personality performance as a reporter infected with a nefarious symbiote that grants him superpowers accompanied by invulnerability and bloodlust. Ample humor, vicious action and a compelling story make this one of Sony's better superhero efforts. Extras include scenes rendered before special effects, deleted and extended scenes and a version of the film accompanied by pop-up factoids.Studios provided review screeners. 1705

General Mills and Hersey's are sweetening up your morning. Both companies are teaming up to bring you a brand new breakfast cereal. The Hershey's Kisses cereal is already making special appearances in some limited stores, but should be widely available in January. The pieces are shaped like Hershey's Kisses and reportedly turns milk chocolate-y almost immediately. But remember: Health experts say less than 10 percent of daily calories should come from added sugars, and kids under the age of two shouldn't have any sugar at all. 541

HUNTINGTON WOODS, Mich. — A popular program for small children hosted by a drag queen is now being criticized by some in Huntington Woods, Michigan. That children's story session has been held for about a year at the public library. In some cases, they've had more than 100 people show up.In a photo of the event, you can see Miss Raven Divine Cassadine and her friend, Mr. Red Ribbon Dylan, reading to children. The controversy has been fueled by a city commissioner who told WXYZ she feels it can confuse small children when it comes to defining their gender identities. However, the city manager, as well as parents, defend the program and say it's been an enjoyable experience for the kids and teaches them about being able to express themselves freely. An out-of-state group is planning a protest of the story time in January. 873
