SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Fire crews battled several spot fires that popped up near Interstate 8 in Alpine Thursday afternoon.The vegetation fire, called the Victoria Fire, started near I-8 and Victoria Drive around 4 p.m., heavily impacting traffic in the area.Crews from Cal Fire San Diego and other fire agencies attacked the flames from the ground and air and were able to get a handle on the blaze by 5:30 p.m.All eastbound lanes of I-8 at Willows Road were shut down for a few hours as fire crews worked. The lanes reopened before 8 p.m.While the Victoria Fire only grew to two acres, it left some families on edge as the heat continues throughout the week.An excessive heat warning goes into effect Friday through Monday for the inland areas to the deserts. A spokesperson for Cal Fire San Diego said they are fully staffed to handle any fires that may happen.The cause of the Victoria Fire is still under investigation. 929

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Due to the pandemic, high school sports are officially on hold until January at the earliest. But while frustration is setting in, CIF is doing everything it can to get the kids back on the field. There's nothing like high school football and the sights and sounds of Friday Night Lights, or a slam dunk on the basketball court. Unfortunately, because of COVID-19, it's wait-and-see for every high school athlete."I think it's very disappointing. Are kids, are families, are schools and communities have been waiting quite a long time and it's been tough," says San Diego Section CIF Commissioner Joe Heinz.There was hope of a December start, but as COVID-19 surged, it was negated by the California Department of Public Health. "It's definitely a fine balance across the nation as different things are happening," Heinz said. "I know our executive director is talking on a regular basis with the California Department of Health and with the governor's office."So for the time being, players, coaches, schools, and everybody else associated with high school athletics must be patient. It has everyone frustrated."You can't blame them. I think we are all frustrated. It's been a long time coming, and when you see other things going on in other states, which has been successful," said Heinz.Now, if the OK is given next month, Heinz says they will have a plan in place. However, there is no guarantee all sports can be played. "Obviously we could get to some point where we just don't have enough time to get a season in. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Home prices in the US fell in May while San Diego home prices remained flat and rents rose sharply, according to a new Zillow report. Zillow says the median home in San Diego is now worth 1,000. In the US, the median home is worth 6,800, down 0.1 percent from April. Overall, Zillow says home values in the US grew by more than 5 percent year-over-year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of protesters gathered in Balboa Park Monday evening, the third day of protests in the San Diego region. A large group began coalescing near the San Diego Police Department headquarters near Broadway and 13th St in the afternoon. As night fell, the group marched up Park Boulevard past San Diego City College and into Balboa Park. Law enforcement officers followed closely. Freeway on-ramps and off-ramp were blocked by CHP officers in tactical gear along the route, preventing protesters from accessing the freeways. After marching through the park, the group stopped near El Prado and Sixth Ave. Many in the group laid down on their stomachs with their arms behind their backs, chanting “I can’t breathe,” in honor of George Floyd, the unarmed black man killed in police custody in Minnesota on May 25, 2020. Afterwards, they held a moment of silence for those killed at the hands of police. Many demonstrators dispersed after, though a group began forming again outside SDPD headquarters. At 10:25, SDPD tweeted that “bottles, fireworks and other objects” were being thrown at officers near their headquarters. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Five baby foxes were rescued from a South Bay construction site after a worker spotted them below a pile of cement rocks set for destruction.A construction worker at an Otay Mesa work site alerted his manager to the a Grey fox and her five babies this week, before crews were set to break down the pile with a jackhammer, according to San Diego Humane Society.Humane officers responded and removed the large blocks over the den with the help of construction workers. The days-old babies — two males and three females — made it out safely, but their mother fled over the commotion.Officers tried to lure the mom with fox pup sounds and her babies to no avail. Monday morning, SDHS says they were able to trap the mother. The babies and mom were brought to SDHS's Project Wildlife center for care, before being transported to Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona. 894
