SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State says 120 more confirmed and probably coronavirus cases have been reported in the school's off- and on-campus student population.The new cases bring SDSU's total student COVID-19 count to 184 cases since the fall semester began last week.The school says county health officials it investigating "multiple clusters" of coronavirus cases among students in the university community, including a previously announced outbreak on Wednesday.RELATED: San Diego State moves all classes online for 4 weeks as student cases riseOfficials say among the cases, 14 groups have been identified within different locations. Some of these groups may eventually be linked to outbreaks.SDSU says none of the cases under investigation are related to on-campus educational activities, including classes or labs. No known cases have been reported in school faculty, staff, visitors, or vendors.The school advised that all undergraduates students who have attended gatherings or think they may have been exposed should get tested and isolate themselves. The county estimated that each SDSU student case averages 4.5 contacts each.“SDSU undergrads need to stay home within their living units this weekend and help us stop the spread within your campus community,” said Wilma Wooten, County public health officer. “If you have been to parties and social events, you need to get tested, now. And isolate until you get results.”Students can call 2-1-1 or their medical providers and stay home if they become ill. They may also contact Student Health Services at 619-594-4325 (Monday through Friday) or the Nurse Call Line at 858-225-3105 (after hours and during weekends and holidays). Testing is available by appointment only and can be scheduled online here.This week, SDSU moved all courses online for at least 4 weeks in response to the growing number of students testing positive. For those isolated, a hygiene kit and food and meal delivery are provided by SDSU to those isolated students, Wood added.RELATED: San Diego State fraternities ban social events this fall due to COVID-19To address the spread of the virus among students, the school banned fraternity events and instituted several policies, which include hiring security to patrol the campus after hours, document violations, and report to staff who handle disciplinary action. Greeters, or wellness ambassadors, are also on campus to remind students of COVID-19 policies.Violation of the policies can result in suspension or in extreme cases, expulsion.As of Friday, SDSU has issued 457 COVID-19 policy violations. Of those, 285 have already been settled and eight organizations have been issued notices of investigation. Two notices to organizations are also in progress, Wood said.The university is encouraging students to avoid gatherings over the Labor Day weekend and says more patrols have been established in the campus area ahead of the weekend. 3590
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University students can earn extra credit in a sociology class if they take a quiz calculating their "white privilege."Professor Dae Elliott is the purveyor of the 20-question quiz that urges students to evaluate situations and determine if their skin color has benefitted them in some way.Featuring scenarios like: “I can be late to a meeting without having the lateness reflect on my race,” and, “I can choose blemish or bandages in flesh color and have them more or less match my skin,” the quiz ranks a person’s privilege by tallying up the points they get for each question.In short, the higher one’s score, the higher their privilege.“I basically made it clear there’s a variety of privileges,” said Elliott, “we all have certain privileges.”Students of all ethnicities can take the quiz and can earn the same extra credit regardless of their white privilege score, according to Elliott.SDSU College Republicans president Brandon Jones says the quiz is racially divisive and his friends in Elliott’s class feel like they are being singled out.“I think what she was trying to do is racially bring people together,” said Jones, “but instead she’s excluding a whole group of people on campus.”Elliott says the evaluation is not about color, but a way in which everyone can understand each other better.“We need to listen to each other,” said Elliott, “give each other the same respect we give our own subjectivity.”Click here to see the quiz 10News obtained from a student in the class. 1557

Orchard is in search of stability, but in a competitive job market, that search becomes more difficult. According to Dana Ellison, a senior recruiter, a common mistake job seekers make is not applying for the right job.“I say titles are a little nebulous. If you see a job and say hey this describes all the skill sets I do, but it’s not how I’m marketing myself, that would be a great way to start,” said Ellison. Ellison also suggests job seekers ditch the fluff words to make room for things that matter. “If someone says they are a good communicator, a team player, a fast learner, those are things literally everyone says, so those things can be left off,” said Ellison. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- SeaWorld Wednesday released an endangered turtle rescued off the Oregon coast back into the ocean.The olive ridley sea turtle named Coral was rescued after being found stranded on an Oregon beach.SeaWorld says the 18 to 25-year-old turtle was taken to a Seattle aquarium for rehabilitation before being flown to San Diego for more treatment.Once the ocean temperature off the coast became stable around 70 degrees, Coral was released back into her ocean home about 10 miles off the San Diego coast.Experts installed a tracking device on the turtle’s shell in hopes of tracking Coral’s location as well as ocean temperature.According to SeaWorld, olive ridley turtles are found throughout the Pacific ocean, though they rarely stray any further north than Southern California. 803
