KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens has been indicted by a grand jury in St. Louis on a felony invasion of privacy charge. The St. Louis City Attorney's Office confirmed Greitens was taken into custody by police in St. Louis. Just about anything with a wireless connection could be a target for hackers to attack, including personal computers, tablets and even baby monitors. But what about medical devices?The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is monitoring that, too.Cardiologist Cynthia Tracy, with George Washington University Medical Center, implants pacemakers into people’s bodies almost daily.“In a typical situation, there might be two electrodes that pass through these veins and into the heart,” Tracy explains of the device.The device, which is about the size of silver dollar, controls a patient's heart beat and sends data to doctors by using the internet."They have a Bluetooth connection somehow that allows the device to communicate with something external," Dr. Tracy says.That wireless connection is where the concern comes in.“There's no such thing as a medical device without vulnerabilities,” says Suzanne Scwarts, who leads medical device cyber security for the FDA.Shwarts says after a series of security problems discovered in various medical devices, cyber security is front and center.“We want patients to definitely be able to understand what are current risks today,” Shwarts says.Dr. Tracy explains while security shortcomings may be there, an actual hack to something like a pacemaker would be a bit difficult.“I couldn't from here reprogram someone that's out there in the lobby, Dr. Tracy says."They would have to be fairly close in order for me to do anything to their device."Though there have been no direct hacks to patients to date, the threat is there, which is why the FDA is ramping up its efforts to make sure the hacking of medical devices doesn't become reality. 1689

Just over 1 million people filed new jobless claims last week, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s latest report released Thursday. Another 14.5 million people filed continuing claims, leaving unemployment in the U.S. still startlingly high.Amid high unemployment across the country, a new report is showing executive compensation is growing as CEOs continue to cut millions of jobs.“We find that a CEO now earns about 320 times that of a typical worker in their main industry,” said Lawrence Mishel, a labor economist and distinguished fellow at the Economic Policy Institute, an independent think tank in Washington D.C.Mishel just authored a report analyzing CEO compensation. That report shows how in March and April when some CEOs were reported to have cut their salaries during the economic downturn, it wasn’t as big of a sacrifice as it seemed.“Salaries make up about 5 percent of CEO compensation packages,” explained Mishel. “And it seems like when CEOs say they are making a sacrifice, it’s really, I think, is better for press releases than in that they are actually going to take a cut in their standard of living.”The report shows how CEO compensation growth is affecting workers everywhere.“If you look at CEO compensation since, back over the last four decades since 1978, CEO compensation grew 1,167 percent,” said Mishel. “The compensation of a typical worker grew 13 to 14 percent over that period.”The report shows CEO compensation increased by 14 percent just last year and is set to continue to go up this year, even in a recession with companies having to let go of millions of workers.“The wages of the vast majority, the bottom 90 percent, has grown only half as fast as it otherwise would have had the top 1 percent not really expanded like it did,” Mishel explained.Essentially the “profit pie” has not grown proportionate to CEO compensation growth. So, as CEOs are getting significantly higher compensation, it is taking from the pay other workers.“I think this is a problem of corporate governance and our tax policies, and it needs to be addressed,” said Mishel.Proposed solutions include capping CEO compensation and taxing anything above the cap. JACKSON, Miss. — Mississippi lawmakers are close to erasing the Confederate battle emblem from the 126-year-old state flag. The symbol is under criticism amid nationwide protests against racial injustice. The House and Senate voted Saturday to file a bill to remove the symbol that many see as racist. They could vote on that bill Sunday. A committee would design a new flag including the words “In God We Trust.” Voters would decide in November whether to endorse that design. KENOSHA, Wis. – The city of Kenosha, Wisconsin, is taking stock of the damage left in the wake of unrest following the shooting of Jacob Blake. As President Donald Trump made his first visit to Kenosha since the shooting Tuesday, small businesses were beginning to tally up the losses.“You ain’t touching my dojo. That’s a fact,” taekwondo student Shelley Meyer said during a live-stream on Facebook as she stood guard outside her dojo.“I’m getting scared. I know I’m a military vet, but I am outnumbered here,” she said.That’s when a number of people confronted her.“They came across the street and then attacked the school,” said Meyer.She pleaded with the attackers before others stepped in.“Then another group of protesters surrounded me and built a human shield.”Today, the school is still standing.“She singlehandedly geared up and, you know, begged and pleaded in the face of people spitting and throwing stuff at her, protected our building,” said U.S. Taekwondo Academy owner Jon Kim.
