Sprint and T-Mobile's have abandoned discussions about a potential merger.The companies issued a joint statement Saturday, after a week of speculation, saying they "have ceased talks.""While we couldn't reach an agreement to combine our companies, we certainly recognize the benefits of scale through a potential combination. However, we have agreed that it is best to move forward on our own," said Marcelo Claure, Sprint's CEO.T-Mobile CEO John Legere also said there were benefits to consolidating, but added that, "we have been clear all along that a deal with anyone will have to result in superior long-term value for T-Mobile's shareholders."Shares of Sprint and T-Mobile tumbled Monday after rumors emerged that merger talks between the two companies were fizzling.On Monday it looked as if SoftBank, the Japanese conglomerate with a majority stake in Sprint, would end negotiations because of concerns about the ownership structure of the combined business, according to reports from Nikkei and The Wall Street Journal. Claure, the Sprint CEO, is also a member of SoftBank's board .Exactly what issue ultimately severed the talks was not immediately clear Saturday. SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - The FBI joined the case of a part-time San Diego resident and tourist found murdered on vacation in the Caribbean in October.Rick Kuhnla says his family was told Monday morning that the FBI entered into an agreement for a joint investigation into the murder of his mother Marie Kuhnla, 62.Nearly two months later, the grief is still raw."At work, I will be going through the day sometimes and it will hit me: I'm not going to see my mom again. It's almost like a panic. It's horrible," said Rick Kuhnla.In mid-October, Marie Kuhnla set off on a girls trip to a Club Med resort in Turks and Caicos with two friends and fellow public defenders in New York. A few days into their trip, Marie went to her room to take a nap and wasn't heard from again. Her body was discovered in bushes on the edge of the resort days later. Royal Turks and Caicos Island Police told her family she was strangled, but Kuhnla says they've relayed to them little else."We haven't been given an autopsy report ... that was completed two weeks after her body was discovered. We don't know the time of death," said Kuhnla.Also upsetting for Kuhnla: it took 34 days to ship her body back, despite initial promises it would only be a few days."Because of how it was embalmed, it decayed a lot," said Kuhnla.That prevented family from have their own autopsy conducted and even viewing her body."It was heartbreaking and feeling disrespected ... makes me feel distrusting of the investigation," said Kuhnla.Kuhnla said his family has had concerns from the beginning. He says on the first night his mother's friends noticed her missing, police declined to search because it was dark out. According to Kuhnla, his family is now more hopeful with the FBI joining the probe. "I feel good about the FBI's involvement. I just want answers. She spent her life fighting for justice for those who couldn't afford it themselves. She deserves every effort to be made to get justice for her," said Kuhnla.In a statement, a Royal Turks and Caicos Island Police spokesperson says the family has been given "updates regarding all relevant information" but declined to comment further. 10News also reached out to the FBI but haven't heard back. 2236
Social distancing is pushing more people waiting to vote beyond the limit some states have for keeping political persuasion away from the polls.Within a week of Election Day, hundreds of thousands of ballots have been cast in the 2020 general election, and long lines have stacked up outside of polling places across the country.Social distancing measures put in place to stem the spread of the coronavirus has stretched voters into longer lines, and security expert Doug Parisi, director of training with Safedefend, said the longer lines expose more people to potentially aggressive electioneers.States have various rules about how close to a polling place any political persuasion can be, some as close as 50 feet from where ballots are cast. Beyond that limit, electioneers can yell, wave signs, and try to influence voters as they approach the ballot box."The biggest thing COVID has done for us is that it has spread us out," Parisi said.He said the combination of political passions running high this year and large groups of voters on Election Day could create the recipe for emotional confrontations."There are organizations out there that have told their people to go vote early so you can express your voice on Election Day," Parisi said. "So there are plans to disrupt things."Parisi said people should do several things to prepare for a potential confrontation.First, he said to stay alert while waiting in long lines by regularly pulling your attention away from a phone or book and scanning the crowds."I don't mean just momentarily," he said. "I mean you actually have to make eye contact and break concentration."Read the crowd's emotions, keep an eye out for unusual packages or bags, know the neighborhood, and identify multiple exits out of any indoor polling location."In situations where there is a crisis, or something happens, God forbid, you need to have an alternative," he said.Parisi also advised voters not to engage with any electioneer.He said talking politics while waiting to vote wouldn't help anything, but, if you get into a situation where you're forced to talk with someone, it's OK to lie."If you need to tell something to somebody outside just to get them to agree with that, that's my advice," he said, "just go along to get along. Now, businesses are finding they also need to develop policies for face coverings."No pun intended but there’s no one size fits all here. Employers need to be looking at the state and local laws to determine whether masks are mandatory. I know that several states have mandatory mask requirements in public spaces, so of course they’ll want to look at those laws to make sure they're complying with them," says Amber Clayton, Knowledge Center Director for the Society for Human Resources Management.Clayton says employers will also need to consider employees who may not be able to wear a mask, whether it be for medical or other reasons."Employers may have to potentially provide a reasonable accommodation in those situations. That might look like allowing the person to work from home, taking leave or modifying their workspaces where they're working within an area that is maybe not as much public facing," says Clayton.For medical reasons, employers could require a doctor's note. Whether it's an employee handbook or company-wide email, employers should have some type of documentation so employees and any customers coming into the office are aware of expectations when it comes to wearing face coverings. Valerie Keels, who heads up her HR department at Gavi in Washington, DC, has developed a mask-wearing policy for her office."The building has imposed those restrictions, as well, in the common areas so when people come into the building they have to wear a mask. When they go into the elevator they have to wear a mask. So it's just consistent with what's going in the building," says Keels.Keels has what they call a "Code Red" which means people can come into the office if they register online. It helps them keep track of the number of people in the office space. Once they get to the office, their temperature is taken and they're given a mask to wear for when it's needed.When you're in an enclosed office space, you can take off your mask. "And even when you're at your own work space because we're also respecting social distancing," says Keels.As for enforcing a mask policy, some businesses could come across people who disagree with a face covering policy."Employers have the responsibility to keep the workplaces safe for their employees and if this is something that's required and the employee refused to wear it, then there needs to be something in place to address that - whether it's sending the employee home or providing leave, or making modifications to the worksite," says Clayton.It's important for employers to work with people and their individual situations before resorting to reprimands. One viral post is driving people to many Black-owned businesses in San Diego. The magical seasonings behind David Bankhead's soul food are a secret. But the owner of Bankhead Mississippi Style Cookin' in Spring Valley says what is not a secret are the racial tensions still evident in America."You know I come out of Mississippi, so I was born into some of the things that are going on right now," Bankhead said. He says he supports the protests. He even took part in #blackouttuesday on his restaurant's social media pages. But the violence, he cannot condone. "When you're tearing up stuff in your own neighborhood, that's not helping the cause at all," Bankhead said. Since opening up his restaurant eight years ago, he had seen great success. But since the coronavirus pandemic hit, his shop has taken a 40% hit. On Tuesday, however, his store was suddenly packed."We had all nationalities come in," manager, Betty King said. "Hispanics, Caucasians, obviously African-Americans... it was it was amazing."It was the day an Instagram post calling San Diegans to support black-owned eateries went viral.
