TIJUANA, Mexico (AP) — Migrants in a caravan of Central Americans scrambled Wednesday to reach the U.S. border, arriving by the hundreds in Tijuana, while U.S. authorities across the border were readying razor wire security barriers.Mexican officials in Tijuana were struggling to deal with a group of 357 migrants who arrived aboard nine buses Tuesday and another group of 398 that arrived Wednesday."Mexico has been excellent; we have no complaint about Mexico. He ran quickly back to the fence.Tijuana's head of migrant services, Cesar Palencia Chavez, said authorities offered to take the migrants to shelters immediately, but they initially refused."They wanted to stay together in a single shelter," Palencia Chavez said, "but at this time that's not possible" because shelters are designed for smaller groups and generally offer separate facilities for men, women and families.But he said that after their visit to the border, most were taken to shelters in groups of 30 or 40.With a total of three caravans moving through Mexico including 7,000 to 10,000 migrants in all, questions arose as to how Tijuana would deal with such a huge influx, especially given U.S. moves to tighten border security and make it harder to claim asylum.On Wednesday, buses and trucks carried some migrants into the state of Sinaloa along the Gulf of California and further northward into the border state of Sonora.The bulk of the main caravan appeared to be about 1,100 miles (1,800 kilometers) from the border, but was moving hundreds of miles per day.The Rev. Miguel Angel Soto, director of the Casa de Migrante — House of the Migrant — in the Sinaloa capital of Culiacan, said about 2,000 migrants had arrived in that area. He said the state government, the Roman Catholic Church and city officials in Escuinapa, Sinaloa, were helping the migrants.The priest also said the church had been able to get "good people" to provide buses for moving migrants northward. He said so far 24 buses had left Escuinapa on an eight-drive to Navojoa in Sonora state. Small groups were reported in the northern cities of Saltillo and Monterrey, in the region near Texas.From Sonora, some migrants said they had already caught buses from to Tijuana.About 1,300 migrants in a second caravan were resting at a stadium in Mexico City, where the first group had stayed last week. By early Wednesday, another 1,100 migrants from the third and last caravan had also arrived at the stadium.Like most of those in the third caravan, migrant Javier Pineda is from El Salvador, and hopes to reach the United States. Referring to the first caravan nearing the end of the journey, Pineda said "if they could do it, there is no reason why we can't."It is unclear whether the two caravans would merge or when they would set out on the road north.Many say they are fleeing poverty, gang violence and political instability in the Central American countries of Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua.Mexico has offered refuge, asylum or work visas, and its government said Monday that 2,697 temporary visas had been issued to individuals and families to cover them during the 45-day application process for more permanent status. Some 533 migrants had requested a voluntary return to their countries, the government reported.The U.S. government said it was starting work Tuesday to "harden" the border crossing from Tijuana ahead of the caravans.Customs and Border Protection announced it was closing four lanes at the busy San Ysidro and Otay Mesa ports of entry in San Diego, California, so it could install infrastructure.That still leaves a substantial path for the tens of thousands of people who cross daily: Twenty-three lanes remain open at San Ysidro and 12 at Otay Mesa.San Ysidro is the border's busiest crossing, with about 110,000 people entering the U.S. every day. This week marks Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 3.6 million Americans face a risk of lead poisoning from lead-based house paint.The CDC says that even low levels of lead in the bloodstream can cause cognitive impairment in children that is irreversible.“As we observe National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, we urge people to take action,” said Patrick Breysse, PhD, CIH, Director of CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health. “Together, we can eliminate childhood lead poisoning as a public health problem by strengthening blood lead testing, reporting, and surveillance, while linking exposed children to recommended services. CDC is committed to help address this threat and improve health outcomes for our nation’s most vulnerable citizens – our children.”The CDC is encouraging parents to get their children’s lead levels checked by a doctor. Black trauma and negative views around the Black experience are showing up there, especially now.A new initiative called "Black Joy Matters" is trying to change this.“There's a huge importance in showing that Black existence is not all death, it is not all trauma, it is not all racial injustice,” said Shavone Charles. “It's a call for us to acknowledge our joy and acknowledge our healing and happiness during a time when we need it most.”Charles is leading the "Black Joy Matters" initiative for photo-sharing platform VSCO. About 76% of people in a new survey they did with Gen Z say they regularly or often see depictions of racial violence on their social media feed and it hurts them emotionally. Their feelings include hopelessness and anger.“We deserve to live our lives in spectrum, and you know showcase what those experiences look like inclusive of the trauma but not exclusive to trauma,” said Charles.A psychologist we spoke with agrees that it's important not to define the Black experience just by racial oppression. He says it's easy to do because there is so much of it. And Black joy can get overlooked.“Yes, we are sort of in the midst of all of these sorts of negative incidents, but even in the midst of those incidents, we not only sort of persist and survive, but we can and often times do continue to thrive,” said Kevin Cokley with UT Austin’s Department of of Educational Psychology.Cokley says the Black joy initiative is important for acknowledging the assets and strengths of the Black community, which is an approach that has been used in Black psychology for many years. But it can be helpful for others too.“I think it's helpful for non-Black people to recognize that you know the ways in which you might sort of caricature or stereotype Black people is very limited and does not give you the true perspective of their humanity,” said Cokley.He points at one positive we've seen from everything going on in our country now. (CNS) - Police Monday announced the arrest of a 47-year-old parolee accused in the shooting deaths of three men during a fight at a bowling alley in Torrance.The arrest of Reginald Wallace of Los Angeles, who had been on parole since 2017 following a conviction for assault with a deadly weapon involving a firearm, was announced by Torrance police Chief Eve Irvine at a Monday afternoon news conference at police headquarters.Wallace was arrested early Sunday and was being held without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, according to sheriff's inmate records. Officers responded to a shots-fired call just before midnight Friday at Gable House Bowl, 22501 Hawthorne Blvd. Three men were pronounced dead at the scene and two others were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries. Two other men sought medical attention on their own.Irvine said a fight involving a few people grew into a brawl involving as many as 15. At some point, Wallace pulled a handgun from his pocket and fired into the crowd, Irvine alleged, adding that he was believed to have been the only shooter.Witness Dana Scott previously told reporters that a group of women got into a fight inside the building, then some men got involved.
