SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Poway gun store is set to sell 1 million rounds of ammunition by the end of the year.It’s called the “1 million round month.” Managers at Poway Weapons and Gear Range are stocking up for the sale that begins on Black Friday. Customers can get their hands on all the ammunition they need before changes come to gun stores next year. (KGTV) - Families of the San Diego Unified School District participated in a telephone town hall Wednesday to listen in on a discussion between panelists Superintendent Cindy Marten and three SDUSD teachers. The school year is set to begin virtually Aug. 31 and the panel discussed what day-to-day classroom time will look like.Teachers shared some of the steps they’ve taken to prepare for the online learning and gave tips to families to keep students successful. Some tips included making sure parent information is updated to ensure accurate information on scheduling and supply pickup is shared, setting alarms on phones to keep students on track with their schedule and compensate for a lack of bells, and also creating a designated learning space for students.Related: San Diego Unified School District announces detailed online learning planThe panel, organized and hosted by Assemblymember Todd Gloria, said individual schools will share specific information on where and when families can pick up supplies, including books and computers. The teachers on the panel also assured families that the students would not spend the whole school day in front of a screen, but rather have some time with the teacher, some time with other students and some individual work time. They also added that older students will work on a quarter system instead of a semester system, which would allow smaller class sizes and fewer classes for each student.While the main message of the town hall was hope and teamwork between schools and families, parent Andrea Gallegos said she still has questions that went unanswered.“Is there a plan to transition back when we’re off the watch list now? Is there any kind of timeline for that? I’m frustrated,” she said.Despite the county being removed from the state’s watch list, the district said it plans to begin the 2020-21 school year with online instruction."You may recall that San Diego Unified announced on July 13 that it would start the school year with online instruction. SAN DIEGO -- Nestled off of Camino Del Rio West in the Midway District, the Body Shop sits between a Navis Pack and Ship site and the "Les Girls" adult entertainment club on Riley Street. The Body Shop strip club welcomed customers for five decades before it closed last December. This week, Rock Church announced they'll be moving in. Rock Church has five campuses across San Diego County. They have a school and now, they have plans for the property in the Midway District. They said the purchase is about more than repurposing a strip club - it's about transforming the neighborhood. "We thought it was a great idea because we know the pain that goes on in that building," said Miles McPherson, pastor at Rock Church. "Not just the women, but the men who go there and their families.”The church’s main campus on Rosecrans is roughly a mile and a half away from the new property. "We don’t know what we're going to do with the building, we just know what it won’t be used for," McPherson said. For decades, parents have explained to their kids why there's a huge sign that says 'nude girls' in their neighborhood, he said. Soon, it won't be necessary."It would be nice to put 'Rock Church' on top of that billboard, but that's another step," he said. "We’ll get to that. But you know the people in that community have been looking at that building for 50 years, and hopefully we can put something more positive in that building.”In addition to taking over the building, McPherson said the church plans to do outreach in the community. (KGTV) - NOAA's Climate Prediction Center released the updated outlook for winter 2020-2021 expectations, and the report shows the increased confidence for a moderate La Nina winter.National Weather Service Meteorologist Alex Tardy said La Nina winters mean cold water along the equator, which are already present in October. These cold waters can have a domino impact on the globe, including warmer waters in the Atlantic and ultimately a higher risk of hurricanes, and also a more northern jet stream over the west coast, keeping moisture isolated more north and leading to dry conditions in Southern California.This dry winter coupled with San Diego’s recent weather history could be a recipe for disaster. The last two winters have been wet in San Diego, with most areas in San Diego County getting 1.5 times their usual rainfall during the most recent winter. This increased moisture helped vegetation grow, then the summer of 2020 brought record-breaking heat, drying that vegetation out. That, coupled with a lack of monsoon moisture in 2020, means there is dry vegetation that could be fuel for fires.“Any type of fire is going to be a problem in Southern California because the conditions are so dry,” said Tardy.He added that a new water year just began Oct. 1, 2020, so while the last water year had impressive rain totals, a new year has started.“So regardless of what happened last winter, we kind of reset now. Now we’re in a whole new year and unfortunately, things are looking very stressed as far as fire conditions,” said Tardy.He said rain is not out of the question for a La Nina year, but it will be more variable. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— The City of San Diego announced Friday it would be shutting down its reservoirs an additional weekday each month in response to a 3 percent citywide budget cut.10News heard complaints from Steve Gordenker and his buddies, all regulars at El Capitan Reservoir. “The summer months, I am here Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, every weekend,” Gordenker said. As competitive freestyle jet skiers, El Capitan is their home turf.“More time on the water equals results,” Gordenker said. When the City of San Diego announced it would be closing El Capitan on the first Friday of every month, they were devastated. “If we are not able to come on Fridays, then that limits us to two days a week,” Gordenker said. “And the problem is this is our only freshwater lake in San Diego County.”Their only other option is to visit San Diego Bay. Gordenker said salt water is much harsher on their jet skis and makes it costly to maintain. That is why they chose to practice at the freshwater reservoir.El Capitan is one of eight city-operated reservoirs that will be closed an additional weekday, starting July 1.The closures are as follows:Barrett – Closed the first Wednesday of each month.El Capitan – Closed the first Friday of each month (starting August 1, 2019)Hodges – Closed the third Wednesday of each month.Miramar – Closed the first Tuesday of each month.Murray – Closed the second Tuesday of each month.Otay, Lower and Upper – Closed the second Wednesday of each month.San Vicente – Closed the second Friday of each month.Sutherland – Closed the third Friday of each month.“It doesn’t even really make any sense,” El Capitan concessions manager Stacy Foster said.Foster works for an independent contractor, Rocky Mountain Recreation. They provide concessions for most of the city’s reservoirs. If the lakes close, Foster doesn’t get paid. “If they still have to pay the city workers and they are losing the revenue of the people that are coming in, they are not saving any money. They are losing money,” Foster said. According to a city spokesman, maintenance and water staff will keep their hours because their duties fall under a separate budget. However, recreation-related workers will be affected by the closures because their duties fall under the 3 percent general fund budget cuts.Out of the eight reservoirs, El Capitan is the only one to close starting in August.“It is going to start in July for the other lakes, but here we were able to push it to August because it’s Fourth of July weekend,” said Foster.Foster said their lake keeper was able to negotiate the start date since the closure would have fallen under one of the busiest weekends of the year. Still, she is worried that the sudden change in schedule will inconvenience regulars. “When they have a truck and a trailer with a boat on it, there is no place for them to turn around back there, so it is going to be a mess,” Foster said, pointing toward the gate.As for Gordenker, he said he is disappointed. But he said it could be worse. “They could turn the whole program off if they wanted, so we are fortunate to at least have two days.”The closures are in effect for the next year. 3174
