After living in California’s Bay Area for eight years, Andrew Sanchez moved his family to Hawaii’s countryside“There are those obstacles,” he said of living in a metropolitan area. “There’s incredible amounts of traffic, pollution, crime. You know, serious things.”Sanchez and his wife are both teachers and wanted to save money and live a slower pace of life with their children. They say those were big factors in moving out of the big city.“We wanted to have an opportunity to spend more time with them and we wanted to make the right steps to watch them the best life they could,” Sanchez said.Now more people are looking to do what the Sanchez family did -- leave the big city for a smaller suburb.“It’s not surprising given the pandemic we are experiencing,” said Lawrence Yun, chief economist of the National Association of Realtors.He says due in part to the COVID-19 crisis and more companies allowing employees to work from home, there’s an exodus from downtown areas across the country.“People will say, ‘Why am I living so close job center when I can have perhaps a better affordability -- housing affordability out in the suburbs,” Yun said.According to a recent Harris Poll survey, nearly one-third of Americans are considering moving to a less densely populated area because of the coronavirus outbreak.Yun says this could impact the real estate market.“Before the pandemic, there was a housing shortage,” he said. “We knew that homebuilders needed to build significantly more to fully satisfy the demand.”Looking to help to meet that demand is housing developer Brain Levitt.“People are coming to Colorado because of lifestyle choice,” he said.Levitt is the president of Nava Real Estate Development. His company recently finished a 196-unit development called Lakehouse area outside of downtown Denver.He says a third of buyers are from out of the of area.“What we are finding, just because the cost of living or maybe new job opportunities or even just the lifestyle -- getting out of the city and getting to a place where you can work and play, it just seems like it’s attracting a lot of people,” Levitt said.That attraction of living away from a big city, however, does come at a cost.“It really required me to check my entitlements,” Sanchez said.Back in Hawaii, Sanchez said his family did have to give up several amenities when moving out of a big city.In the end, however, it was well worth it.“My kids are safe,” Sanchez said. “And you can’t put a price tag on that.” 2501

A mom in Port St. Lucie, Florida said she wants to know how her 9-year-old son wound up at the end of his bus route, miles away from home, without his bus driver noticing him fast asleep in the bus.“I understand children can fall asleep, but at the end of the route why didn’t she check?" Rebecca Council said. "Why did she drive miles and then he wakes up, he’s scared, he’s unsure of where he is. She’s alone with my child.”“I was just scared," Trevor Council said.Trevor got on the bus as normal Wednesday afternoon at Windmill Point Elementary, where he attends third grade."We put so much trust into the school system to take care of our children," Rebecca said.But then, Trevor fell asleep and missed his drop off at Newport Isles just after 3 p.m.Soon after, his mom got a frantic phone call from his stepmom saying Trevor hadn't come home from school."My heart immediately it felt like it dropped into my stomach," Rebecca said.Trevor's dad tried calling the school district and was told his bus had been running on time."The parents having to track down their child when we’re entrusting our school bus drivers with the safety of our children. We should not have to be the ones trying to track down the location of our children," Rebecca said.In the meantime, Trevor’s bus continued five miles away to the Mako soccer fields with Trevor fast asleep in a seat. He eventually woke up while the bus was parked there.“I stand up and say where was I and the bus driver was like, 'What?'" Trevor said. "She didn’t know I was still on the bus.”He said he wrote down his name for the bus driver and ended up being carted around another school’s route before being brought back to his own bus stop, just before 5 p.m.“No one bothered to call the father, the mother, stepmother, no one,” Rebecca said.After about 45 minutes, Trevor’s dad eventually got an answer from transportation.“The guy just told them he’s fine, he fell asleep," Rebecca said.But that answer isn’t enough. Rebecca said she wants to know how this happened.“I want to understand how that’s possible that the bus driver didn’t at least double check and make sure that every child was off the bus," she said.“I just don’t want it to happen to anybody else," Trevor said.St. Lucie County School District didn't respond by the end of the day Thursday to requests for comment. 2368

A woman who was shopping at Heinen's grocery store in Bay Village, Ohio on Friday walked out of the store to find that her car was missing.As it turns out, another woman accidentally took the car home, thinking it belonged to her.According to Bay Village police, the two white Lexus cars were parked next to each other in the parking lot. A 60-year-old woman walked out and took one of the cars, thinking it was hers. When the other woman came out to get in her car, she realized it was gone. Police said the woman had left the keys in her car when she parked.The 60-year-old woman realized she was in the wrong car when she got home and was unable to open her garage. The car was returned to its rightful owner. 745

Actor Brendan Fraser has accused a member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group that presents the annual Golden Globe Awards, of groping him at an event in 2003.In a profile in GQ, Fraser recounts an encounter with former HFPA president Philip Berk at a luncheon hosted by the organization at the Beverly Hills Hotel.Fraser alleges Berk grabbed his rear end and, through his pants, touched him in the area between his genitals and his anus."I felt ill. I felt like a little kid," Fraser told GQ. "I felt like there was a ball in my throat. I thought I was going to cry."After the incident Fraser, best known for his work in the "Mummy" franchise and films like "School Ties," said he became "depressed."A representative for Fraser confirmed his account to CNN and said there was no further comment.Berk, still a member of the HFPA, admitted that he pinched Fraser's buttock at the event in question but said in his interview with GQ he did so in jest."The charge of a sexual innuendo is a total fabrication and a desperate attempt by Fraser to rescucitate (sic) his career," Berk told CNN.In response to questions posed to Berk by GQ, shared with CNN by Berk, he said the alleged encounter "occurred in front of dozens of people" and said he "had two witnesses."Berk did apologize to Fraser for the incident, after prompting from Fraser's then personal publicist."My apology admitted no wrong doing, the usual 'if I've done anything that upset Mr. Fraser it was not intended and I apologize,'" Berk said.The HFPA told CNN in a statement that the GQ article contains "alleged information that the HFPA was previously unaware of" and that they are "investigating further details surrounding the incident.""The HFPA stands firmly against sexual harassment and the type of behavior described in this article," the statement from the HFPA read. ABERDEEN — Amber Pleasant wears a smile on her face while she and her husband Jerome Pleasant read to their daughters Amaya, 3, and Amara, 2. Nine-month-old August sleeps peacefully in her lap.Behind that smile hides a lot of worries and concerns, not only about Amber’s future, but the future of her family.“I have six pairs of eyes watching me. If I start to cry or break down, they’ll start to worry,” she said.Amber has plenty to worry about. A day after her interview with WMAR, she was scheduled to have a bilateral mastectomy. She was diagnosed with breast cancer six months ago at the age of 37, a disease she says runs in her family.“It was a big shock that it would happen to someone this young,” she said. “I mean, you always see it, but you don’t think it will happen to you this young.”Amber says she feels the pressure to be strong, not just for her three youngest children, but also her three older daughters from a previous marriage. She says they don’t often talk about the odds.“We just focus on the positive and the good things and we don’t really think about the negative,” she said.This is not the Pleasant family’s first run-in with cancer. In 2005, Jerome was diagnosed with cancer in his jaw. Doctors had to remove part of his cheek and jaw bone and his teeth. Radiation damaged his right eye and he must now wear an eye patch.His cancer diagnosis came not long after his 18-month-old daughter Talia, from his previous marriage, was also diagnosed with cancer.“Father and daughter were battling cancer at the same time, receiving treatments at the same time and receiving surgeries at one time,” Amber said.Talia died a few years later at the age of 4. A couple of years later, Jerome was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer. He was treated only to have it return a couple of years later. In all, Jerome has had more than 20 surgeries since 2005, and the chemo and radiation have caused other disabilities like epilepsy.So when Amber found out she had breast cancer, she says she couldn't believe cancer was hitting their family yet again. All she could think about was her children.“I can’t imagine all six of my children not having their mother and it scares me to think that that could happen,” she said. “So I fight every single day, through every single chemo and through every single procedure.”The medical bills quickly began to pile up. Amber says they log a lot of miles between Baltimore and Bel Air, Maryland, where Jerome and she are treated, respectively. She says the family car barely fits the entire family and has become an unreliable mode of transportation.Amber says they realized pretty quickly that they needed to ask for help.“We don’t want anyone to think that we can’t take care of our children and so that’s why we’ve never asked for help before," she said. "We don’t want anyone to think that we can’t do this and that we can’t provide for them and we can’t take care of them.”She says the Harford County community has stepped up tremendously, especially former high school classmates and teachers. Both she and Jerome say it has been a huge source of support and strength for them, and so has their faith.“Faith is a driving force in my life,” Jerome said. “It motivates me to get up every day.”“We’ve run out of resources so we’re very grateful to the Harford County community that has come forward to help our family because without them, I don’t know what we would be doing right now,” Amber said.Amber’s bilateral mastectomy went well and she’s now recovering. She still has to go through more rounds of chemo and radiation.The Pleasants have started a GoFundMe page to help cover their medical costs.Weichert Realtors, Diana Realty in Bel Air is also adopting the Pleasant family for Christmas. They are collecting donations for the six children, who are 17 years old, 15 years old, 10 years old, 3 years old, 2 years old and 9 months old.
