LEXINGTON, Ky. — A year of unexpected stress has caused at least one dietitian to see more patients with significant weight gain and heart disease, which she warns could become worse over the holidays.University of Kentucky Gill Heart and Vascular Institute Cardiopulmonary Rehab Dietitian Shorus Minella said the pandemic has caused weight gain to become an issue with more and more people to remain indoors and be more inactive than usual.Minella said an easy tip to staying healthy is to keep healthy foods on hand for snacking.She also shared her trick for practicing moderation "When you do feel like you want to snack and you're feeling stress to help pull back how much you're actually eating," Minella said. "I love potato chips so I make sure I put them in a little small bowl. Take the bowl away from the kitchen and away from the bag and once I'm done eating them out of that container that bowl, I'm done with my chips."With the season for special holiday treats in full swing, Minella explained how everyone can keep within their diets."You don't want to deprive yourself of the things that you possibly wouldn't get day-to-day all year round," she said. "So I like to say, save the calories for the little special things that you usually don't have. So if you don't usually have those Christmas gingerbread cookies, make room for them have room for them, maybe cut out some soda or sweet tea that you usually would have, and save your calories on the special things that you wouldn't get all year round."She encouraged those preparing food to trade out healthier options like low-fat milk for whole milk on a recipe.With heart disease ranking as the leading cause of death in the U.S. in 2019 and with obesity numbers on the rise throughout the country since 1999, Minella said small changes like making a bit of time for exercise can go a long way."If you can't go outside because of the weather, making sure to do chair exercises, or I like to remind people just marching in place, counts as well," she said. "So just something to get moving a little bit more. And then when you do feel like eating, think about if you're bored or not, or if you're hungry and think about those hunger cues as well."Minella encouraged everyone to try a heart-healthy diet that tries to reduce the amount of saturated fat by focusing on lean meats like chicken, turkey and fish."If you're paying attention to what you're eating, you're paying attention to enough to, I don't want to say feel 'bad,' but you're paying attention enough to have those feelings and that's great start," she said. But West Virginia Democrats charge it's just a ploy by Republicans to put more conservative judges on the bench in the state's highest court.The court's justices -- Chief Justice Margaret Workman and Justices Allen Loughry, Robin Davis and Elizabeth Walker -- are accused of failing to carry out the court's administrative duties and wasteful spending during office renovations.They were impeached on 11 articles of impeachment, dealing with wasteful spending, maladministration, incompetency, neglect of duty and potential criminal behavior, according to a press release from state House Speaker Pro Tempore John Overington. 964

La Mesa (KGTV)- It’s being called one of the most progressive marijuana ordinances in the county. The city of La Mesa plans to unveil its proposed rules this week. City leaders believe lifting limits is the key to defeating illegal pot shops. If passed, the City of La Mesa would be the first in the county to put forth an ordinance without a hard cap on the number of dispensaries within city limits. “We didn’t play that game,” says La Mesa City Council Member Bill Baber. “We’re basically saying they’re in our commercial areas, they have to be regulated, and the market itself will flush out how many get to exist.” Councilmember Bill Baber says the proposed ordinance would weed out illegal pot shops by operating a path to run a legitimate business. It’s a different approach than the one in Chula Vista. City leaders hope a limited number of legal dispensaries will drive customers away from illegal pot shops. Currently, there is only one legally operating dispensary within La Mesa city limits. “We’re proposing our dispensaries that have legally been selling medicinal marijuana to also move one step forward and to sell recreational. It’s the same product.”Under the new laws, the dispensaries will be taxed. The money will go to the city’s general fund. It will help with putting more officers on the street and shutting down illegal operations. Councilman Baber says the city estimates the new ordinance will bring in nearly million a year in city taxes. The funds will also be used to clean up old run-down buildings that once housed illegal dispensaries. “In 4 years our city attorney and our police have shut down 26 of these,” says Baber. West La Mesa Resident, Erik Egelko, says the boarded-up businesses are now bringing in squatters. Behind an old, illegal pot shop on El Cajon Boulevard sits old furniture, trash and the rancid smell of urine. “It just really turned into a slum,” says Egelko. “I see west la Mesa as having this incredible potential.” The La Mesa City Council will be reviewing the ordinance during tomorrow’s city council meeting. Lake Charles Police Chief Shawn Caldwell says that in five people have died from carbon monoxide poisoning while using a generator.Caldwell says that generator safety is important and asks that residents keep generators away from covered areas of homes."Don't let a generator cost you your life," Caldwell said.The generator was inside an attached garage and the door was partially open. The level of carbon monoxide caused the deaths of all five inside the home.A total six people have died from carbon monoxide poisoning since Hurricane Laura has passed.Electricity is expected to remain out for days or even weeks throughout Louisiana following the hurricane. 670

LACEY, Wash. — A man suspected of fatally shooting a supporter of a right-wing group in Portland, Oregon, last week was killed late Thursday as a fugitive task force tried to arrest him in Lacey, Washington.According to the U.S. Marshals Service, 48-year-old Michael Forest Reinoehl was killed as a federal task force attempted an arrest. He was wanted by Multnomah County (Oregon) Circuit Court on murder charges after allegedly shooting and killing 39-year-old Aaron "Jay" Danielson, a member of the right-wing group "Patriot Prayer," last Friday during clashing protests in Portland.According to the Marshals, a task force located Reinoehl in Olympia, Washington and attempted to take him into custody peacefully. The federal agents claim Reinoehl brandished a firearm during the encounter, and the Marshals returned with gunfire.Reinoehl was pronounced dead at the scene. None of the task force members were injured.On Thursday afternoon, Reinoehl told Vice News that he shot Danielson in self-defense on Saturday, believing that he and a friend were about to be stabbed."You know, lots of lawyers suggest that I shouldn't even be saying anything, but I feel it's important that the world at least gets a little bit of what's really going on," Reinoehl told Vice News. "I had no choice. I mean, I, I had a choice. I could have sat there and watched them kill a friend of mine of color. But I wasn't going to do that."Portland has seen protests nightly for about 100 straight days, dating back to the Memorial Day weekend death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. While some demonstrations have been peaceful, a small area of downtown Portland has been marred by vandalism and violence for several straight months.
