SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday a new curfew went into effect for San Diego businesses, in an attempt to slow the sky-rocketing coronavirus cases across the state.Saturday, the county announced 1,478 new coronavirus cases, the highest number in a single day we've seen. San Diego County's total is now 70,709 cases. Six more people have died from the virus, bringing the local death toll to 966.This alarming rise in cases urged California Governor Gavin Newsom to issue a limited stay-at-home order for counties in the purple tier, shutting all businesses down 10 p.m. - 5 a.m. until Dec. 21.That cuts restaurants down about an hour from the way they were operating prior, according to Mike Hess, founder of Mike Hess Brewing."It gets my crew home earlier, it's just another thing to deal with, it's a month maybe it's longer we'll see, we'll keep going," he said. He's not worried so much about the latest change."This has been the year of hits, I mean it's one after another," Hess said he's concerned about winter weather coming."Heaters are in shortage, you know covered space, you know that kind of thing, it's tough to shelter people on a sidewalk," he said. He's also worried about keeping cans in stock, "there's plenty of aluminum there's just a shortage of manufacturers making cans."He said he's thankful for his incredible team who is taking the punches with him."Everybody says pivot I think it's more than pivot, you have to be flexible," he said.Hess said he's thankful his doors are open and business is good, "production is up this year, we're putting everything in cans so that's been good, and our on-site locations have been doing pretty well this year."Hess longs to bring a sense of community back, "I long for those days when people can mingle and say hey! Who are you? and find you have other interests in common other than going to Mike Hess Brewing." 1879

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Arts Park @ Chollas Creek has been helping young people for almost 20 years now."The reason this place was started was there was a lot of vandalism in the community. I was part of the problem then, I consider myself part of the solution," said Jose Venegas, a co-founder, and Program Coordinator at Writerz Blok. During his teenage years, Venegas turned to graffiti. "It was that or gang bang really, to be honest, I grew up in a neighborhood where there was a lot of gang activity, a lot of drugs."A twist of fate led his friends to tag a vacant property in Southeast San Diego owned by the Jacobs Center. Rather than make the teens someone else's problem, the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation embraced them, donating the space and funding materials. "We encounter a lot of youth who show artistic expression but have never had a mentor or seen professional artists doing murals, graffiti," said Bennett Peji, Vice President of Impact and Partnership for the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation. Their mission is to foster a thriving community envisioned and realized by its residents.“The identify of a place should really reflect the the community that lives there but that’s not often the case," said Peji. Jacobs Center donated the property and funded materials to make the Arts Park a reality. Writerz Blok artists have able to help hundreds of teens and they now do workshops in high schools as well as the East Mesa Juvenile Detention Center."It's a very soothing feeling, it's like therapy," said Venegas. "I feel like this place has done more than offer a space to paint."The Arts Park is open Monday-Friday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. It will also be open one Saturday a month in the summer. 1755

The historic day will be marked with a parade, kids activities, park tours, butterfly and ladybug releases, and much more.Live performances are also planned at the park's Botanical Garden and Spreckels Organ Pavilion. In 1868, the City of San Diego moved to set aside 1,400 acres of land for the area then known as "City Park." For more than 20 years, the land sat undeveloped but with its spectacular view of downtown San Diego.RELATED: 'Dr. Beach' names Coronado Beach among best in the U.S.Soon, the park would see the first steps that have led to its scenic beauty. In 1892, Kate Sessions, the "Mother of Balboa Park," offered to plant 100 trees a year within the park in exchange for 32 acres of the land to be used for a commercial nursery. As the park came into its own, water systems, roads, and more plants were added. In the decades since it was established, Balboa Park has seen the San Diego Natural History Museum, Museum of Man, Spreckels Organ Pavilion, and many other attractions added, transforming the parcel of land into an art and culture destination. 1292
