SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A family escaped from a fire that erupted in the garage of their Bay Ho home late Sunday night, but the family’s pet cat did not survive.At around 11:15 p.m., San Diego Fire-Rescue crews were called to a home in the 4800 block of Hidalgo Avenue in response to a fire at a two-story home.Firefighters knocked down the flames and kept the fire contained to the garage, but there was smoke damage throughout the home, SDFD spokesperson Monica Munoz said. A time of knockdown was not available.The family of five made it out of the home safely, but ABC 10News learned the family’s cat was overcome by smoke and later passed away.The American Red Cross was called to help the displaced residents arrange for temporary lodging. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man died Saturday night following an officer-involved shooting in El Cerrito. Police say they received a call just before 8 p.m. from a 70-year-old woman who said her 52-year-old nephew attacked her with a brick at a home on the 5800 block of Adelaide Avenue. Two officers responded to the scene and found the woman, who they say had been hit in the head and chest. Officers found the man in the backyard of the home and tried to arrest him, but they say he struggled.Witnesses say the suspect then picked up a shovel and started swinging at police. "He continued quickly advancing on the officers while swinging the shovel, prompting one officer to fire his Taser, while the second officer fired his service weapon," San Diego Police said in a news release. The suspect was struck by gunfire at least once and died at the scene, police say. The man's identity isn't being released at this time. The suspect’s aunt is expected to be okay and no officers were injured in the incident. The department says one of the officers is a four-year veteran of the department while the other is a 16-year veteran. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A car crashed Monday afternoon into the front of a Pacific Beach 7-Eleven, destroying a portion of the store.According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, the incident happened near Cass Street and Loring Street.Crews said the elderly man who was driving hit the gas instead of the brakes, and the car slammed through a window of the convenience store up to its windshield.The driver, customers, and the clerk working at the counter were not hurt.The car also missed the propane tanks stored in a metal cage outside the store.
