WEST PALM BEACH, Florida — West Palm Beach says the number of police cars that had to be pulled off the streets due to engine failure has risen to 49.City Administrator Jeff Green said at this point they believe a tainted fuel shipment in the middle of March is to blame. All of those cars had traces of biodiesel in their tanks, which are meant for unleaded only.West Palm Beach Police Public Information Officer David Lefont said it is not impacting public safety since the agency is supplementing with rental cars.“We have captains driving around in minivans,” Lefont said.Seventeen patrol cars have gotten new engines and are back in service.The other affected cars are non-marked cars.Green said Miami-Dade County police reported they had to pull 120 cars with the same issue.In West Palm Beach the cars affected are all Ford, which is why the automaker is investigating the case as well.But Green said at this point they believe it was the fuel shipment. With COVID-19 cases surging across the country, public health officials and ICU doctors are pleading with Americans to reconsider gathering with family members ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday for fear of spreading the virus even further.“We really don’t have a national or even multi-state plan, and that worries me,” said Dr. Stephen Morse with Columbia University.While he strongly recommends against it, Dr. Morse knows inevitably some people will still get together on Thursday. His advice is to have a multi-layered safety approach.The first layer involves testing. He’s urging people to avoid those rapid tests if they can because they’re less accurate.With so many Americans trying to get tested right now, officials also say it’s important to plan ahead and be prepared to potentially not get results back before Thanksgiving.“Testing is really important because it’s the only way we can find people who aren’t obviously sick and stop them,” Dr. Morse added.Health officials say if you are planning a small family gathering, get tested before you see high-risk family members. Americans are also being urged to consider virtual holiday gatherings whenever possible.If you are gathering with people outside your household, eat in separate rooms or consider eating outdoors.“What I’ve seen is once it gets into a family, because we let our guard down around our family, everybody gets infected,” explained Dr. John Coleman, who works in the ICU at Northwestern University’s teaching hospital in Chicago.Dr. Coleman says there are just too many variables to consider when it comes to gathering for Thanksgiving this year.“I think we are on the cusp of some very, very dark months. Tripadvisor says that this year's figures are down from an estimated 70% of Americans travelling in 2019.Tripadvisor surveyed Americans from October 16 to 20, so it is possible increased travel restrictions associated with a rise in cases could scare off some from traveling by Thanksgiving. Many states are telling travelers to quarantine for two weeks before coming into contact with others. The vast majority of those traveling, 76%, say they will drive to their Thanksgiving destination, compared to just 11% who say they will fly.The survey found that 22% are staying in a hotel or vacation rental to practice social distancing from friends and family."Despite COVID-19 concerns, the majority of Americans are still traveling this Thanksgiving. The way in which consumers travel, however, will look very different from past years," said Christopher Hsi, Consumer Market Research Lead Analyst for Tripadvisor. "This year, we can expect shorter trips with smaller groups of people for more intimate, close knit gatherings. Many are taking day trips (24%) or spending one night at their destination. Americans are also continuing to avoid big cities, instead opting for warm weather and beach destinations in southern states. Both of my parents are physicians. I don’t take any special precautious with my parents. I don’t think they take any special precautious with me.“I think physicians might be risk tolerant, but I have not changed my behaviors with people I see regularly, other than if they’re telling me they have a fever, and then I might say ‘stay away’ because I don’t want to be quarantined and not be able to work.”Adalja agrees, however, that there is a risk in attending family gatherings, and while face coverings are effective, they're not a panacea.If you ask Dr. Christopher Murray, the director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, he is opting not to see extended relatives amid the pandemic.“Personally, in our family, we will not have our family get together,” Murrays said about Thanksgiving. “I am particularly cautious.
