Social distancing is pushing more people waiting to vote beyond the limit some states have for keeping political persuasion away from the polls.Within a week of Election Day, hundreds of thousands of ballots have been cast in the 2020 general election, and long lines have stacked up outside of polling places across the country.Social distancing measures put in place to stem the spread of the coronavirus has stretched voters into longer lines, and security expert Doug Parisi, director of training with Safedefend, said the longer lines expose more people to potentially aggressive electioneers.States have various rules about how close to a polling place any political persuasion can be, some as close as 50 feet from where ballots are cast. Beyond that limit, electioneers can yell, wave signs, and try to influence voters as they approach the ballot box."The biggest thing COVID has done for us is that it has spread us out," Parisi said.He said the combination of political passions running high this year and large groups of voters on Election Day could create the recipe for emotional confrontations."There are organizations out there that have told their people to go vote early so you can express your voice on Election Day," Parisi said. "So there are plans to disrupt things."Parisi said people should do several things to prepare for a potential confrontation.First, he said to stay alert while waiting in long lines by regularly pulling your attention away from a phone or book and scanning the crowds."I don't mean just momentarily," he said. "I mean you actually have to make eye contact and break concentration."Read the crowd's emotions, keep an eye out for unusual packages or bags, know the neighborhood, and identify multiple exits out of any indoor polling location."In situations where there is a crisis, or something happens, God forbid, you need to have an alternative," he said.Parisi also advised voters not to engage with any electioneer.He said talking politics while waiting to vote wouldn't help anything, but, if you get into a situation where you're forced to talk with someone, it's OK to lie."If you need to tell something to somebody outside just to get them to agree with that, that's my advice," he said, "just go along to get along. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Rapper Lil Wayne has been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, an offense that carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison.Documents filed Tuesday in Miami federal court say the rapper, whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., had a gun and ammunition on Dec. 23 of last year despite knowing he had the previous felony.Authorities say Carter acknowledged owning the gold-plated handgun after his luggage was searched upon arriving in Miami on a private plane."Carter is charged with possessing a gold-plated handgun in his luggage on a private plane," Howard Srebnick, a lawyer for Lil Wayne, said in a statement. "There is no allegation that he ever fired it, brandished it, used it or threatened to use it. There is no allegation that he is a dangerous person. The charge is that because he was convicted of a felony in the past, he is prohibited from possessing a firearm."The rapper is due in court on Dec. 11.Carter's previous conviction came in 2009 when he pleaded guilty to a 2007 charge of illegal possession of a loaded weapon in New York. (KGTV) - A Solana Beach cafe is rebounding after a theft over the summer, new coronavirus restrictions and wintry weather.Back in August, seven of Homestead Cafe and Market's tables and chairs were stolen. Police found the culprit and got back most of their outdoor dining furniture.The entire time, the community has wrapped their arms around the mom and pop shop."People are still coming by wanting to bring stuff asking what we need," co-owner of the restaurant Marie Brawn said, thankfully."They wanted to make sure that we knew that they still want a place like this to be around after this whole mess," she said alluding to the constantly changing coronavirus guidelines for restaurants.She said many small businesses like them in the area have been shutting down."It's a bit of a roller coaster, it's been very humbling," co-owner Jamie Brawn said.The couple was ahead of the curve when the county announced San Diego was in the purple most restrictive tier this week. They already had all their dining outside.When they made that move, they were ahead of the forecast, thinking to add a waterproof custom made patio cover and heat lamps."Through the generosity of our neighbors, we were actually able to do it and get ready for winter coming," Marie said.She said a couple of loyal customers even came and sat under their new patio in the rain last weekend.Inside their cafe has been redesigned into an organic market, filled with produce, specialty cheeses, Italian sauces, beer, wine, breakfast items. They also have items for those with dietary restrictions and gifts for the holiday season.The market helps them with the overhead, keeping the business afloat.On top of it all, they're balancing distance learning with their two boys and charity work, feeding families in need in North County. (KGTV) - The City Council in Solana Beach wants to make it illegal to sell any kind of flavored tobacco within the city."What we're doing right now is a reaction to what is literally an epidemic," says Councilmember David Zito.He says the Council has seen the numbers from the CDC and other health agencies showing a rise in underage smoking, mostly related to the increase in e-cigarettes. That's why they're taking such a drastic step."This is not a safe thing to do and we need to take these kind of precautions," says Zito.Under the proposed ban, stores in Solana Beach wouldn't be allowed to sell any kind of flavored tobacco. That means menthol cigars, flavored hookah tobacco, flavored cigars, e-cigarettes or anything else that has a "distinguishable tast or aroma or both, other than the taste or aroma of tobacco, imparted by a Tobacco Product or any byproduct produced by the Tobacco Product."Right now, the ban would only affect a small handful of stores in the city. The two gas stations within Solana Beach already limit their sales of flavored products to just menthol. There are a few other convenience stores that sell e-cigarettes and other flavored products.
