BEIJING, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- China is enacting various measures, such as increasing its annual grain harvest and creating new grain safety legislation, to ensure a food-secure society, according to an official of the country's top economic planning body.Zhang Ping, minister in charge of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), said in his report to China's top legislature on Thursday that China would increase its grain output capacity to an annual yield of 550 million tonnes by 2020, which would be a rise in output from 530.8 million tonnes in 2009.Zhang said the country would further strengthen its grain production capacity, by means such as improving infrastructure construction, especially the farmland irrigation system, expanding the use of fine breed and high-productivity technology, improve farming methods and upgrading the farming industry's ability to resist disasters.China's total grain demand is expected to reach 572.5 million tonnes by 2020, and to maintain a food self-sufficiency rate of 95 percent, at least 540 million tonnes of grain would be needed by then, Zhang said.Zhang added that the NDRC and other food administrative agencies were working together in a draft law on food and grain.According to Zhang, China has established a preliminary emergency response system for grain safety, strengthening the production, storage, transportation and distribution of food and grain during emergency situations.

XICHANG, Sichuan, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- China successfully launched the "SinoSat-6" satellite for radio and television live broadcast at 12:14 a.m.Sunday from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province.The satellite was carried on the Long March 3B rocket which took the SinoSat-6 into a geostationary transfer orbit 26 minutes after the launch.In the following days, Xi'an Satellite Control Center and Yuanwang tracking ship will manipulate the satellite's position and transfer it to enter the geostationary orbit.SinoSat-6 has a designed lifespan of 15 years and will eventually work at longitude 126.4 degrees east about 35,700 kilometers above the equator, said the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASTC), the satellite's researcher and producer.It will mainly serve for relaying TV and radio live broadcast signals and will greatly improve cultural life for people living in remote and mountainous regions, according to China Satellite Communications Corporation which will operate the satellite.China has launched the first SinoSat series satellite, SinoSat-1, in 1998. The SinoSat-2 was launched in 2006 but malfuctioned for it failed to deploy its solar panels and communication antennae.SinoSat-6 will serve as a substitute for SinoSat-3 which was launched on June 1, 2007, according to the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.

BRUSSELS, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- China expected an early resumption of the six-party talks to ease tensions and resolve the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here on Tuesday.All parties should make joint efforts to ease tensions between the south and the north on the peninsula and strive to resume the six-party talks at an early date, said Wen while meeting South Korean President Lee Myung-bak on the sidelines of the eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit in Brussels."This is in the fundamental interests of all parties involved and is conducive to peace and stability in the region," he said.The six-party talks, a multilateral mechanism designed to peacefully denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, were launched in 2003. The talks involve China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States.Speaking of the upcoming Group of 20 (G20) Seoul Summit, slated for Nov. 11-12, Wen said it was of great significance for boosting the world economic recovery, adding that China would support South Korea in seeking positive outcomes at the meeting.Wen said China regards South Korea as a friendly neighbor and an important partner. TIANJIN, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Executives from China's auto makers Sunday rejected an official warning that unchecked growth in the industry was leading to excess capacity and could harm the wider economy.Chen Bin, an official with the National Development and Reform Commission, China's top economic planner, Saturday said excess auto capacity threatened sustainable economic development and must be "resolutely" stopped.But industry representatives and the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) Sunday argued car makers were only trying to meet expected demand in the world's largest auto market.Dongfeng Automobile, a major Chinese auto manufacturer, had been running in top gear since last year, said Fan Zhong, a senior manager. "Our problem is not having enough capacity."Most entrepreneurs at the International Forum on Chinese Automobile Industry Development in Tianjin had similar views.Ford China was focusing on expanding capacity as demand kept rising, said CEO Robert Graziano.The overall capacity of China's auto industry might seem excessive, but the market had huge potential for restructuring and growth, said Hu Xinmin, honorary chairman of the CAAM.
