Believe it or not, some people working from home are starting to miss their morning commute, so much so that they’ve started “fake commutes” and experts are applauding the decision.“At first I didn’t miss it. I thought ‘oh well my workday starts as soon as I wake up,’ which was nice at the time,” said Joshua Chickasawa.Chikasawa is an accountant who went from an hour long, 10-mile, bike ride to work each day, to work at his fingertips within minutes. However, after a few weeks that got old.“Even though I don’t have to bike to an actual destination or anything like that, I have been going on a bike ride for an hour or so,” said Chikasawa. “Sometimes, I’ll bike by the office I am supposed to be at.”He’s now getting up again at 5 a.m. and does, his “fake commute.”“It is just forcing myself to get out of bed, so I am actually going outside and having a real start to my day like I used to,” he added, “instead of just rolling to my laptop and starting the work day without having any real distance between my personal life and work.”You might be surprised how normal these fake commutes are becoming.“I have actually heard this from some of my friends and colleagues,” said Jon Jachimowicz.Jachimowicz is a professor at Harvard University.“There is this tension that we are experiencing right now where we are actually beginning to understand that even though we hate the commute in yester-year time when we actually went to the office, there was also something valuable about it,” said Jachimowicz. The professor recently published research showing one of the biggest benefits was the time the commute gave us to transition between personal life and work. Also, that the transition period in this new normal can effectively be replicated with a fake commute or new before and after work ritual.“I don’t think it actually matters what exactly it is,” said Jachimowicz. “It can be something as easy as putting on work clothes, which is what I do.”Companies are even starting to see the need for this. Microsoft recently announced it’s adding a virtual commute feature to its Teams platform to help workers transition in and out of work mode. Although, the company has not fully outlined what that will actually look like. 2235

BALTIMORE, Md. - The pitches Brandon Woody has bent on the trumpet have brought him to places many kids who were born in West Baltimore and grew up over East Baltimore only dream of.“The trumpet has allowed me to fly,” Woody said. “It’s allowed me to leave my city. It’s allowed me to go college in New York and California for free.”He started out playing drums at Leith Walk Elementary in East Baltimore. He quickly realized he wanted to make a change from percussion to brass.“I couldn’t take the instrument home for a whole two weeks, because we couldn’t take an instrument home until we got a sound out of it. Until we were able to play it.”After two weeks he could make a sound and has been bending pitches since. He’s been able to meet his idols like Theljon Allen, Christian Scott, and Clarence Ward.“They have made me more curious about being a black creator. About pushing the envelope, pushing the boundaries of the trumpet. Not putting it in a box. People that just inspired me to be myself my 100% raw self.”He said music saved his life and has allowed him to grow from the rich flow of musical culture in his hometown while creating his own sound.“It’s not really real if you’re not acknowledging where the notes, the culture, the sound, the tone, the intonation that you’re playing, where that was influenced by.”He’s featured in Calvin Klein’s One Future #CKOne global campaign.According to the press notes from Calvin Klein, the goal of campaign is to highlight young voices against the backdrops of their hometowns. Here’s a quote from Woody in one of the ads.“They make us out to be so angry, so violent, so hateful. We need to normalize our vulnerability, our honesty, our sensitivity.”Woody is appreciative of the opportunity to showcase his and his friend's talents.More importantly, he hopes connecting with the global company creates a path forward for the city and its young people.“Who are the young kids with potential that want to play the trumpet or that already play the trumpet?” Woody said. “How can I make it easier for you? How can I bridge the gap?”The name of his band is Upendo, which means love in Swahili. They are in talks to do virtual lessons for kids.Drummer Devron Dennis teaches in Baltimore City.“My main goal is to inspire in any way I can,” Dennis said. “I like to do that by playing drums and teaching.”Keyboardist Troy Long’s fingers found the keys when he couldn’t walk or play trumpet because of back surgery.“I just got this keyboard a month before surgery. While I was in recovery, I taught myself how to play.”With his friends by his side and his trumpet in his hands, he’s pushing the limit of three valves and creating a sound that’s his own.“I can play like ya know a young man that’s growing up in Baltimore and had experiences that you have when you grow up in Baltimore,” said Woody. “That’s all I can sound like. I can’t sound like nothing else.”Proud sons of Baltimore showing the beauty that lives in our city.Woody plans on releasing his first album sometime next yearThis story was first reported by Eddie Kadhim at WMAR in Baltimore, Maryland. 3113

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – What was supposed to be a routine bike ride turned into deadly crash in Nevada.Thursday morning, a box truck plowed into a group of bicyclists on U.S. 95, killing five of them.At least three other bicyclists were injured. One was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition from the scene south of Boulder City. Another one was transported by ambulance and is in serious condition. The third bicyclist suffered minor injuries.Troopers with Nevada Highway Patrol say the driver of the box truck was not hurt and is cooperating with police. They don’t believe at this time that the driver was impaired. The bicyclists did have a safety car with them at the time of the incident. However, one group of cyclists was in front of the car and the other was behind. It is not known which group was struck.“I don’t even know. It’s just the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life," said former Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer Michael Anderson. He was collecting his thoughts after a horrific day. Five of his fellow bicyclists were killed after that box truck struck their group.“Try to contact their families... I don’t even know how to say it to them,” he said.Anderson says the wind caused part of the group to get behind a safety vehicle to protect themselves when the box truck hit them. The group was on an annual bike ride, making a 135-mile loop into California.NHP troopers say the crash was one of the worst they’ve ever seen.“It’s a horrific tragedy when you have a beautiful sunny day like this, and we just lost the lives of five people,” Trooper Travis Smaka said.Watch law enforcement provide an update on the crash: 1667
