SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diegans will have their first opportunity to watch the city's National Lacrosse League expansion team Saturday evening when the San Diego Seals conduct a free open practice and intersquad scrimmage at Valley View Casino Center.Arena doors will open at 6 p.m., with the practice starting at 6:15 p.m. Coaches and players will provide insight to fans throughout the practice about themselves and the value and importance of each drill.The scrimmage will begin at 7 p.m. Fans will be invited onto the field for autographs and photos with the team following the scrimmage.Admission and parking are free, but tickets are required, which are available at SealsLax.com.The practice and scrimmage are the only opportunity for fans to see the Seals on the field in San Diego before the home opener Jan. 12 against the Rochester Knighthawks.The Seals will begin play Dec. 22 in Denver against the Colorado Mammoth. 934

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The historic Hotel del Coronado is reopening Friday, ending the first closure in the hotel's 132-year history.The famous red-roofed hotel on Coronado Island's Orange Avenue closed with other hotels in late March as the COVID-19 pandemic reached San Diego.Hotels have started to reopen in June, following state and county public health guidelines. The Hotel del Coronado, a major tourist attraction, will reopen with limited amenities and reduced occupancy.Hotel del Coronado General Manager Harold Rapoza told 10News guests and hotel staff can expect to feel safe and comfortable after numerous modifications."We disinfect all the high-touch areas, including the light switches, remote control, door handles. We sanitize the entire room, and then we put a seal on the outside of the door so when guests do check in, they know that no one has accessed the room. They are the first person to access the room since it was cleaned and disinfected," Rapoza said.Rapoza added face coverings/masks will be required for all hotel staff and guests while in public areas. He also said there will be sanitation stands and cleaning wipes around the resort.Rapoza said as soon as they learned the hotel would be allowed to reopen, staff worked "fast and furious" to meet new health and safety guidelines."This is a very busy resort in the summer. There's a lot of foot traffic and we wanted to make sure we could manage through the guidelines. We want everyone to come and enjoy the Del and see the Del this summer. We're excited to show them our new amenities and our new protocols," he told 10News.The luxury villas the Beach Village at The Del will also open Friday. The hotel's main pool and Cabana guestrooms will remain closed until at least July 19 until upgrades are completed.Until the pool reopens, hotel management said guests will be able to borrow sand chairs for the beach and umbrellas for free. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County health officials reported 1,378 new COVID-19 infections and 22 deaths today as hospitalizations continue to surge with nearly triple the number of people hospitalized compared to a month ago.Tuesday's data brings the cumulative number of cases to 83,421 while the death toll crossed another milestone as it reached 1,019.The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency reported 723 coronavirus patients hospitalized as of Tuesday, with 197 of them in intensive care units. That compares to 692 reported Monday, with 180 in the ICU. That number was 671 on Sunday, 636 on Saturday, and 580 last Wednesday and Thursday.The number of people with COVID-19 in area hospitals has nearly tripled from one month ago -- 262 were hospitalized on Oct. 31. Of the 83,421 cases logged in the county since the start of the pandemic, 4,685 -- or 5.6% -- have required hospitalization and 1,030 patients -- 1.2% -- had to be admitted to an ICU.The total number of people hospitalized for any reason in the county is 4,307 -- which has been fairly consistent over the past several months -- but the percentage of COVID-19 patients in the region's hospitals rose from 6% a month ago to 16.8% on Tuesday.Tuesday also marked the 21st consecutive day more than 600 new cases have been reported and the ninth day of the last 12 more than 1,000 new cases were reported -- including two days over the Thanksgiving weekend with more than 1,800 new infections.San Diego County is on a trajectory to double its number of cases in 45 days.A total of 15,377 tests were reported Tuesday, with 9% returning positive, raising the 14-day average to 6.3%.A total of 17 community outbreaks were confirmed Tuesday. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Gulls coach Dallas Eakins was Monday named the coach of its NHL parent team, the Anaheim Ducks.Eakins coached the Gulls throughout their four seasons in the American Hockey League, guiding them to a 154-95-23 record and three Calder Cup playoff berths. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit Tuesday promised a thorough investigation into allegations that one of his officers uploaded a social media post mocking a roadside memorial for a robbery suspect fatally shot three months ago by that lawman and a patrol partner.SDPD Officer Jonathon Lucas was immediately suspended without pay after the online image seemingly belittling the death of 25-year-old Leonardo Hurtado Ibarra appeared on Instagram last week, Nisleit told reporters during a mid-afternoon briefing at downtown police headquarters."I am shocked and disturbed by the reports of this officer's conduct," the chief said about the post, in which emojis of laughing and tearfully wailing faces were superimposed over a photo of the makeshift tribute to Ibarra at the site where he was shot."The officer's alleged actions fall short of the high standards I and our community have for the San Diego Police Department," Nisleit said.Late on the afternoon of June 27, Lucas and Officer Tevar Zaki opened fire on Ibarra, a suspect in a recent robbery, when he allegedly pulled a revolver from his waistband and pointed it at them as they approached him in the 1200 block of Sixth Avenue in the Core-Columbia district.Ibarra succumbed to his gunshot wounds in a hospital two days later.The shooting prompted demonstrations by protesters alleging a culture of excessive use of force and racial bias on the part of the San Diego Police Department.While condemning the antagonistic online posting Tuesday afternoon, the police chief offered a message to Ibarra's survivors."I want to apologize to the Ibarra family," Nisleit said.
