(CNS) - A motocross rider had to be airlifted for medical treatment Sunday after hitting a bystander at Barona Oaks MX, an off-roading facility in Lakeside.The Barona Fire Department responded to a call shortly after noon for two injured men at the 80-acre facility, where riders bring their own ATVs and dirt bikes.The rider, who is in his 40s, lost control of his dirt bike during training runs around the track and struck the bystander, who is in his 60s, according to Barona Fire Capt. Jim Huson. Friends of the bystander who was hit say he's well known, and often at the track to train riders.The rider was airlifted from the scene, Huson said, while the bystander was transported in an ambulance.No additional information was immediately available. 779

Like countless other Americans stuck at home during COVID-19, Steven Clark found himself searching for purpose. The 43-year-old man eventually found it in the basement of his century-old home, making desks for students in need.Woodworking is not Clark's full-time job, but it is where he finds himself between Zoom calls and on weekends. Months into the pandemic, Clark knew he had the tools to do something, and eventually, phone calls to local charities revealed the answer: families in Massachusetts, where Clark lives, were in desperate need of desks."It just seemed like an alignment of stars to say, 'Hey, why don’t we build decks, because it seems like there’s a real need for that,'" he explained.Virtual learning and the pandemic have revealed that nearly 9.4 million kids don't have access to the internet. Nationwide, 4.4 million kids don't have access to a computer. But there is no telling just how many kids don't have a desk of their own at home, especially in families who have recently come out of homelessness."I think we can all think back to when we were kids and had something that was ours," Clark said about the need for desks.As the executive director of Furnishing Hope of Massachusetts, Suzy Palitz has plenty of furniture ready to be deployed to families in need, but the one item they need the most right now though are desks."Your bed is to sleep on. your desk is to work at. There are certain things you do in those places and it’s also a way to keep organized," Palitz said.This nonprofit helps families who have just transitioned out of homeless shelters. Most kids don't have a bed to sleep on, let alone a desk to do schoolwork on. The need has become even more critical with students across the country learning virtually at home."It’s a place that’s steady, that they can focus in," she added.The idea has taken off. So far, with the help of 14 other families, Clark and his helpers have delivered five desks to kids in need with another 25 on the way and the funding to make 10 more. There's nothing fancy about the desks. LIPAN, Texas – A man in Texas is dead after a possible mountain lion attack and officials are warning nearby residents to keep young children inside at night as they search for the animal.Around 3:30 p.m. last Thursday, deputies with the Hood County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 15000 block of Howell Rd. in Lipan in reference to a missing person call.Deputies were told Christopher Allen Whiteley, 28, was missing and last seen on Wednesday, in the early morning hours.Deputies checked a wooded area nearby and eventually found Whiteley deceased, the sheriff's office said.Preliminary findings show Whiteley died from a wild animal attack, possibly a mountain lion.The sheriff’s office has contacted a governmental trapper with the USDA, who specializes in tracking and removing mountain lions. Officers said they'll work with the trapper and Texas game wardens to locate the animal.The sheriff's office urged the Lipan community to be mindful of their surrounding and to keep their young children and animals inside at night.“The safety of Hood County citizens are my priority one, but please don’t interfere with the process of locating the animal and stay clear of the area being actively worked by officials," said Hood County Sheriff Roger Deeds.Whiteley’s body was sent to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.This story was originally published by Thalia Brionez at KXXV. 1415

LAS VEGAS — A new Harvard study with the Movement Advancement Project shows that COVID-19 has negatively impacted LGBTQ+ households more than non-LGBTQ+ households, especially if they are Black or Latinx."There tend to be worse outcomes in general," explained Dr. Ryan Cox, behavior health director at the LGBTQ Specialty Clinic at Truman Medical Center."Part of that is a lack of primary care," he said. "So people often in this community, particularly the transgender community, don't already have established relationships with medical providers."Healthcare workers say they are seeing these study results reflected in the community."They would rather skip their medical appointments rather than come out and expose themselves to COVID," said Nurse Care Manager Kim Tilson, also with Truman Medical Center."It is definitely having an impact," she continued. "So if you can't come in for doctor's appointments, if we can't follow up, it's hard to make sure we can refill your medications and still stay safe.The study says 64% of LGBTQ+ households have lost a job due to the pandemic, and if you're Black that number is 95% compared to less than half of non-LGBTQ+ households.A quarter of LGBTQ+ households couldn't get needed prescriptions.
