SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A federal count shows the number of homeless people increased by double-digit percentages in three San Francisco Bay Area counties over two years as the region struggled to tackle the growing problem, including 17% in San Francisco and 43% in the county that includes Oakland.More than 25,000 people were counted as homeless during an overnight tally conducted in San Francisco, Alameda and Silicon Valley's Santa Clara counties in January. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- It was a battle over workers rights at a rally downtown Thursday. Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez directly addressing the group against her proposed Assembly Bill. Assembly Bill 5 would affect any independent contractor including Uber and Lyft drivers, yoga teachers even hairdressers. The group at Thursday’s rally was made up mostly of adult entertainers. “I’ve been doing fine I like the freedom to educate myself and if someone’s going to stop me from that I want to do something about that and voice my opinion," one woman told 10News. The bill would make many independent contractors full time employees, forcing employers to provide overtime, health care and sick leave. Assemblywoman Gonzalez rebutted the group today. "There’s nothing in the law that says an employee has to work from 9 to 6. Any employer can tell you to work two hours, one hour, any hours you choose. There’s nothing in the law that says an employer can’t be flexible.”Some say they don’t want it because they prefer the flexibility and freedom to decide hours that comes with independent contracting. 1104

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Nearly 200 realtors and elected officials in San Diego kicked off an innovative program aimed to reduce access to dangerous opioids. Volunteers went door-to-door, handing out information cards and special plastic bags for residents to properly dispose of their unneeded and expired prescription drugs.For the fourth year in a row, the number of San Diegans who died from unintentional drug-related deaths went up. To counter the increasing number of opioid deaths, San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore, County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar, Safe Homes Coalition and the San Diego Association of Realtors launched the “Keep Kids Safe” program.10News followed a group of volunteers who were assigned to walk around the Bay Ho area. “I’m not here to sell a home. I’m here to introduce an opportunity to save lives," real estate broker, Robert Weichelt said. In the last couple of years, he has sene a disturbing trend in his industry. “We had people coming to our open houses, going in to take medicine out of the medicine cabinet," Kevin Burke, CEO of the San Diego Association of Realtors said. Thieves would pose as prospective buyers, then steal prescriptions from the medicine cabinets when they tour the property. That is why more nearly 200 realtors volunteered their Saturday to spread the word about disposing of unneeded or expired prescription drugs. Flushing pills down the drain causes pollution. Instead, they are distributing 100,000 special prescription bags that could be taken to one of 20 disposal sites in San Diego County, so they do not land in the wrong hands. Sandy Nolan lost her son, Jerry, to a heroin overdose almost 11 years ago. His gateway drug was inside of their home. “It all started with prescription drugs," Nolan said. That is why she is so passionate about eliminating access to dangerous opioids. “When you’re done with that prescription, and you don’t need it anymore, get it in that bag, take it to the disposal spots, and get it out of your house, right away," Nolan said. (KGTV) - A new group of leaders has the California GOP ready to take on the 2020 elections and rebound from a disastrous 2018 cycle.Over the weekend, the GOP elected Jessica Patterson as their state-wide Chair. She's the first woman and first Latina to ever hold the top spot in the state party.They also elected a Taiwanese immigrant, Peter Kuo, as Vice-Chair. And the new Treasurer, Greg Gandrud, is openly gay.Analysts say that gives them a more diverse group of leaders that can reach out to more voters across the state.But newly elected Secretary Randy Berholtz, who lives in San Diego, says their election within the party had nothing to do with demographics."I think what the delegates did is pick the best person for each of the positions," Berholtz says. "It just so happens that the people were of different ethnicities and sexes and ages and everything else."Berholtz says he saw an energized party at the convention, ready to bounce back from 2018.In that election, Republicans lost 7 seats in the US House of Representatives. Loses in local legislative races also gave democrats a super-majority in the California House and Senate. Republicans only hold 19 or 80 seats in the House and 11 of 40 seats in the Senate.The election also continued a streak of no Republicans winning statewide office since 2006.Berholtz says a strong Republican party is a good thing for the state."California needs to have a good second party," he says. "If not, nobody's watching the party in power. And we want to tell the voters that we're watching."In the last election, Republicans only made up 24% of the registered voters. That put them behind Democrats and people who registered as "No Preference."Political analyst John Dadian says it could take as long as 10 years for the GOP to turn that around."The main strategy has to be to bring some of those, 'prefer not to state' voters back," says Dadian. "It's all in the messaging, because California isn't just a blue state, it's a deep-blue state."Berholtz says his party will use a focus on family, personal initiative and good government to turn the tide. He also says they'll look to a more grass roots campaign to try and elect leaders from the bottom-up."We're energized right now," he says. "We're all going out and speaking, finding great candidates, doing voter registration, improving our message and just telling people in California that there is a viable alternative and we have not given up on you." 2489
San Diego is falling behind other major California cities when it comes to new construction of Accessory Dwelling Units, also known as "Granny Flats."The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development defines an accessory dwelling units (ADUs) — also referred to as accessory apartments, second units, or granny flats — "as additional living quarters on single-family lots that are independent of the primary dwelling unit."The California State Assembly passed a new law in 2016 requiring cities to make it easier for people to build ADUs by easing regulations. State lawmakers see it as a way to help solve the housing crisis."The separate living spaces are equipped with kitchen and bathroom facilities, and can be either attached or detached from the main residence."But in the first 10 months after the law went into effect, San Diego only saw 64 new permit applications to build a granny flat. By comparison, in the same time, Los Angeles got 1980 applications. San Francisco had 593, Oakland had 247 and San Jose had 166. Only Sacramento, with 34, had fewer than San Diego.Developers think San Diego's high permitting fees are holding up the process."People are ready to build a granny flat, they've hired architects and they're ready to go," says Caitlin Bigelow. Her company, Housable, helps people navigate all of the fees and permits they need to build. "They just don't want to pay ,000 extra dollars they may not have to in six months," she says.Depending on where you live and how big an ADU you want to build, a city report showed fees could climb as high as ,000. Those fees cover the costs of connecting ADUs to city utilities like water, sewer and power.
