SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A mysterious monolith that appeared in a San Diego parking lot earlier this week is gone, the structure torn down by a group of people in an incident captured on social media Tuesday night. The monolith was in the Scripps Ranch Marketplace parking lot. Similar structures have been popping up all over the country and the world since mid-November. In videos posted to social media, a large group of people can be seen pushing over and then carrying away the shiny, sleek object late Tuesday evening. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A possible theft ring may be 'fishing' for checks at local post offices.Kevin, who owns a small business, mailed out several checks to vendors at the post office in Poway on a Friday night. On the next Tuesday morning last month, he got a call from his bank, Wells Fargo. A woman had tried to cash a fake check at a bank in Los Angeles, a typed check for nearly ,500 written out to a woman's name from Kevin's business. The bank rejected it. The bank representative then asked him about two other checks that had just been deposited at other branches. The two fake checks - written out to a different woman for some 0 each - had been deposited for cash in the Los Angeles area."There's definitely anxiety. You don't know how much money has been compromised," said Kevin.Kevin is not alone. In April, 10news featured the story of Barbara Reynolds and her state tax check, stolen and altered after she dropped it off at post office in Mira Mesa. Her check was likely 'fished' out by thieves using a rodent glue trap, before being washed. A chemical solution dissolves away the ink, allowing a thief to fill in the blanks.Another theft victim told 10news the Postal Inspection Service supervisor described to him a possible theft ring that has hit post offices in Encinitas, Poway and Mira Mesa in recent months. 10news has also tracked down reports of similar thefts in Sorrento Valley and Rancho Bernardo."It's frustrating. Never crossed my mind that something dropped off at post office could be compromised," said Kevin. Kevin's bank did cover the loss of the fake checks. 10news reached to the Postal Inspection Service but haven't heard back.Experts say use the slots inside the post office and if you do use an outside collection box, drop off your mail before the final collection time. 1823

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new study reveals the importance of having qualified athletic trainers available at high schools. One of the experts behind the study says he is shocked at how poor a job California does at regulating athletic safety."California is either dead last or next to last in all of these ratings of high school sports safety," according to Dr. Eric Post, an Assistant Professor at San Diego State University, who helped author the study.Robbie Bowers, trainer at Rancho Bernardo High School, says only about 60 percent of California schools have a certified trainer. With several sporting events and practices occurring for each school on any given day, it's nearly impossible even for schools with a trainer to have adequate coverage for all athletes.According to Post's research, that greatly increases the risks for student athletes who suffer an injury. "At schools with low athletic trainer availability, kids with a concussion were more likely to have that concussion go unidentified and also more likely to have that concussion be mismanaged as a result." Post adds that at schools with low trainer availability, an athlete with a concussion was often not treated until 24 hours after the injury. At schools with adequate trainer availability, athletes got initial treatment within 30 minutes.Bowers has backed previous efforts to create a statewide standard and certification; however, those legislative attempts have failed to pass. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego businessman pleaded guilty in federal court on Wednesday to charges of bank fraud and tax evasion in connection with failing to report hundreds of thousands of dollars in income and fraudulently obtaining a mortgage.David Daughtrey, 60, of El Cajon, admitted to evading taxes by failing to report 8,612 of income to the IRS and also fraudulently obtaining a mortgage for his .8 million home using a third party, U.S. District Attorney officials said.As part of his plea agreement, Daughtrey will pay ,016,457.91 in restitution to the IRS. "Mr. Daughtrey blatantly disregarded his tax obligations for years. As part of the fraud scheme, he directed another person to submit a mortgage application to Wells Fargo to buy a .8 million five-bedroom home, officials say, and falsely claim that the fund used as a down payment belonged to a third party and the third party would be the primary homeowner.In reality, Daughtrey provided the funds and the house was intended to be his primary residence. He later submitted a false hardship letter on behalf of the third party to get the bank to modify the terms of the home loan, officials added.He also admitted that over several years, he and his spouse, who is not charged in the case, conspired to falsely report total income in tax years 2012 through 2015. Officials say in 2012, Daughtrey omitted at least 8,612 in income and the IRA tax loss for years 2012-2014 was 6,536. "Our nation’s tax system funds critical infrastructures and vital programs, including supporting our citizens and small businesses during the ongoing pandemic," said Ryan L.
