KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One of the men indicted for the death of 10-year-old boy on a water slide in 2016 is also facing a bankruptcy in Texas.Jeff Henry, the co-owner of Schlitterbahn water parks in Kansas City, Kansas and Corpus Christi, Texas is scheduled to appear in a Kansas City, Kansas, courtroom next week.The Corpus Christi location is part of an ongoing bankruptcy.According to court records, Jeff Henry and his brother Gary Henry were behind a company called Upper Padre Partners (UPP).Those same records show UPP had more than million in unexplained cost overruns for the Corpus Christi water park.That figure is more than double what it was expected to cost to build the complex, which also includes a nine-hole golf course.Companies the Henrys borrowed money from accuse them of mismanagement and misappropriation of funds.Right now, a court-appointed trustee runs Upper Padre Partners, and submits monthly financial reports to the court.The newest report, for February, was submitted last week.Court records show a company called Axys loaned UPP million in February 2015.By November 2016, three months after 10-year-old Caleb Schwab was killed while riding a slide in the Kansas City park, that million was in default.Axys foreclosed on a piece of property next to the Corpus Christi water park and is attempting to sell it to get some of its money back.An attorney for Axys said UPP still owes the company millions of dollars.Court records show UPP also owes International Bank of Commerce more than million.That bank has put claims known as liens on both the water park and the golf course. 1662

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Rep. Steve Watkins, R-Kansas, faces criminal charges associated with voting irregularities.Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay announced Tuesday that Watkins has been charged with interfering with law enforcement by providing false information, voting without being qualified and unlawful advance voting. All three charges are felonies.Watkins also faces a misdemeanor charge of failing to notify the Department of Motor Vehicles of a change of address.Kagay said his office was notified of the allegations in December and asked the Shawnee County Sheriff’s office to conduct an investigation.An affidavit in the case was submitted Tuesday by the sheriff’s office to Shawnee County prosecutors.Kagay said the sheriff’s office is handling the investigation.Watkins serves as representative for Kansas’ 2nd Congressional District, which includes Topeka, Lawrence, Atchison and other parts of eastern Kansas outside the Kansas City area.This story was originally published by Sam Hartle on KSHB in Kansas City, Missouri. 1052

(KGTV) - A life’s work of rescuing horses burned to the ground in a matter of moments due to the Valley Fire burning east of San Diego.Patty Hyslop has overseen her horse rescue, Hyslop Horse Haven, for more than 20 years. She’s had Multiple Sclerosis for just about the same amount of time. The horses she saves have kept her moving through the pain.“If it weren’t for all the rest of the horses I don’t think she would still be here today,” said Shylynn Wellman, who has grown up at the ranch and now lives on the property.When Patty saw flames quickly approaching the ranch Saturday, she tried to get as many of her 24 horses out, but wasn’t able to save all of them.“The officers were like ‘you’re going to die if you don’t leave’ and I said I don’t care, I’m going to stay with my horses,” she said.Ultimately, she was the last one to leave the property and tried to save all of the horses, but had to leave a few behind.“I was so scared I was going to come home to burned and dead horses,” she said.Miraculously, when she returned, the horses she’d left had survived. Most of her ranch had not.In total, eight tack sheds filled with hundreds of thousands of dollars in horse supplies burned. The golf cart she uses to get around the large property, a huge help because of her MS, was a pile of melted metal. A majority of her property was blacked with ash as well. Despite the destruction, she still feels blessed.“I think it was a lot of luck. I think the horses, between that and God blessing us with horse angels, yeah,” she said.Right now, her horses are being housed at The Lucky Seven Ranch, and she’s hoping for some donations of horse supplies or sheds to get back on her feet. This GoFundMe has been set up to help the rescue ranch. Patty said her goal is to rebuild and continue inspiring people to save horses.“These kids come to me and say I want to grow up to be like you, I want to know as much as you do, I want to help horses, too. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Inside Super Food and Brew, it’s been a brutal few months of business, ever since the coronavirus pandemic began.“We did have to reduce the staff quite a bit,” said Al Penttila, Super Food and Brew’s general manager. “Basically, it was a struggle for them for the beginning of it.”Surviving mainly on take-out and delivery orders, news that the Republican National Convention would be coming to Jacksonville came as a welcome relief.“The arena is about three blocks from here so we're hoping and we're expecting a lot of foot traffic,” Penttila said.The RNC estimates about 50,000 people will make their way to Jacksonville for the convention and potentially bring in more than 0 million to the local economy. Yet, there are some concerns about what else it might bring, one of which revolves around the potential for protests during the convention.“I hope it doesn't get out of hand,” Penttila said. “I know they're taking precautions.”The city’s Republican mayor said there will be plenty of security in place.“Peaceful protests are a right and here in Jacksonville we honor and respect that right,” said Mayor Lenny Curry, R-Jacksonville. “There will be additional resources in our city that will be subsidized by the federal government.”Then, there’s the ever-lurking specter of COVID-19. This week, Florida saw its biggest one-day jump in cases: more than 2,800.“A convention is a super spreader event and the possibilities, if you're a gambling person, the possibilities, the odds will be in your favor that you could possibly be exposed,” said Dr. Doreen Perez, with the University of North Florida’s Brooks College of Health.She said, without precautions, conventions of any kind can potentially spread the coronavirus to many people, who could end up taking it home to their communities.“Especially when they're coming from different all points of the nation,” Dr. Perez said.Her advice for attendees: social distance, wash your hands and wear a mask.“It's been proven that it works,” she said.Back at Super Food and Brew, there is little fear and a lot of hope.“I think the economic benefit of the RNC coming here will outweigh anything,” Penttila said.It is something the city will know one way or another by the last week of August. KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Jeff Henry, one of the men charged in the death of 10-year-old Caleb Schwab at Schlitterbahn water park, did not appear with his attorney in court Thursday, Dec. 13.His attorney stated Henry is at an inpatient facility in Houston, Texas. He asked the judge to stay his bench warrant until Jan. 24, 2019 when Henry returns for his other case.The attorney said Henry, a co-owner of Schlitterbahn, will begin an intensive outpatient program while in Houston. Henry is accused of allegedly arranging for a human trafficker to bring a woman to him at a hotel room in July 2018, a day after he was in court for the Schlitterbahn case.Part of the payment to the trafficker included passes to the water park, documents say.The state told the judge they were fine with the suggestion from Henry's attorney to stay his bench warrant since they have been in touch with authorities there and they say they have had no issues with Henry.Henry has a ,000 cash and surety bond and is under house arrest.Schwab died Aug. 6, 2016 from a neck injury sustained while he was on the 17-story Verrückt water slide with two other park goers. The boy collided with the overhead netting and metal hoops after coming out of his raft, according to court documents.Schlitterbahn is located in Kansas City, Kansas.
